I have a cloud storage problem! reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fhuzzy_ · 2023-12-07 13:47 TLDR: Need a self-hosted cloud software that lets me have an updated copy of files on any machine and doesn't take ages to process files like nextcloud, do you know any? Hello, I work remotely from my computer(1) at home but when I need to go to the office I need to have access to my files from my laptop(2). So I opted by having a 3rd computer(3) at home always online to act like a cloud server. I have used Nextcloud before but since my storage is now 60GB the initial upload to Nextcloud takes days and ends up full of errors, so now I'm using File Cloud, which handles files much faster but doesn't give me the chance to have an always synced copy of some files/folders on any machine, it's always everything on the server... Now I started to use a software to work that doesn't like to handle files that are not on the host machine, and that is not compatible with File cloud. Where do I go for now? I dont need any of those management tools of filescloud or the email and calendar stuff from nextcloud, I just want something that works... What I value is: Self-hosted on my Server (computer 3 running proxmox) Synchronization between different devices Possibility to have an always updated copy of files/folder on any machine (like Nextcloud) Backups Open/share files from my Phone (android) Any advice from you guys? Let me know ---------------------------------------------------------------------- szayl · 2023-12-07 13:51 Are the Nextcloud errors from your proxy capping file size or total transfer time? Nextcloud itself really isn't doing anything fancy with the files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- really_bad_eyes · 2023-12-07 13:53 I don't fully understand what your requirements are but if you want to sync files between devices, there's Syncthing (which also doesn't need a "central" server), or if you want web/application UI and file management, Seafile is a decent Nextcloud alternative. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Janpeterbalkellende · 2023-12-07 14:20 Are you using cloud flare or other proxy service? And whats your upload/ download speed. I have no issues with file upload to nectcloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 14:32 If Nextcloud takes ages to process files, you likely did something wrong. Make sure you have a correct db and redis setup etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Joyfulsinner · 2023-12-07 14:42 I’m not sure if this will help you but after I decided not to use nextcloud. I kept an eye out for a replacements and found https://obsidian.md/ https://github.com/vrtmrz/obsidian-livesync https://sabre.io/baikal/ https://github.com/haiwen/seafile I have not been able to test them yet so I can’t say how well they work ---------------------------------------------------------------------- borg286 · 2023-12-07 15:05 Check out Resilio Sync. It is a torrent-like program/app. All clients are connected to all other clients. Throw a file in a folder on one client and it shows up on all others. All clients are peers with no central server. All clients can choose to selectively not automatically download all files in any given folder, yet still pick and choose specific files. Clients can be read-only, others can be read-write. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nextized · 2023-12-07 15:40 Syncthing is by far the best about this ---------------------------------------------------------------------- meijad · 2023-12-07 17:51 I had alot of luck with Syncthing. Its fairly versatile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-07 18:37 I'd look at SyncThing or SeaFile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Julian_1_2_3_4_5 · 2023-12-07 19:51 how about syncthing? In your situation maybe with your always on server with an exposed port and just normal wifi syncing between all other devices? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- schklom · 2023-12-07 21:52 Doesn't Seafile store all user files in one large container file? This means if Seafile has a problem, you can't do anything with the container file, no? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- really_bad_eyes · 2023-12-08 00:10 Seafile does have a proprietary way of storing data blocks, and it would be very complicated to restore data in the event of server failure, though not impossible. AFAIK, if you keep regular backups of the database and the data disk is intact, it is possible to retrieve the data. Realistically though, if you have any files that you cannot go without, you should have backups in place already. There are other avenues you can explore, I'll list some methods I've personally tried here: 1. Use FileBrowser/FileGator to manage and share files via web browsers. 2. Putting Filestash in front of an S3 bucket (third party or selfhosted Minio on your own server). There's also an Android/Windows app called S3Drive that can manage and share files from an S3 bucket. 3. Pydio
