Small business owner: considering signi g up to Microsoft Office Premium for mail etc. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sndr666 · 2023-12-07 10:49 OMG, talk me off this ledge please. For years I have maintained my own mailserver, caldav and carddav server and it has been, let's say, interesting. However, this week I have missed some mails due to my vps provider shenanigans and though it was the easiest fix ever (reboot), but it felt like the straw that broke the camel's back. Adding to the misery is that it is increasingly difficult to participate in teams meetings and inviting ppl to them. This is vendor lock-in 101, but I am seriously considering giving in as I have no real perspective on an alternative. Have you been in this pickle yourself and how did you solve it? Or, have you been using the services of ms either happily or reluctantly in the past and how has that experience been? I have noticed that both the subscription plans and the terms and services are prone to change and this raises red flags too, but it could be my boomer ms hatred flaring up. I have hosted my own email for the last 20 years or so. A lot of clients I used to host for slowly switched over to 365. It wasn't because of the deliverability or the mail options. It was because they could get a bundle that gave them some version of office and that stuff is super expensive. Honestly I feel as long as you have your SPF and your DKM stuff set up and your text records and your antivirus and your filtering which sounds like a lot but really isn't you'll be fine. My mail server runs in docker containers on a VM that gets snapshot nightly. Backups are breeze right click restore. Doesn't take that much CPU doesn't take that much storage. Not feature rich but who needs most of that fancy stuff? > Or, have you been using the services of ms either happily or reluctantly in the past and how has that experience been? I am relegated to using MS for work — but I don't have much say in it. Between Microsoft and Google Workspace, I'd choose Google Workspace though. I don't like Microsoft's software and web interfaces, and I don't like having too many services in the Microsoft basket — I already rely on them for an operating system and word processor. I sort of 'grew up' with Google, so I know how to manage a Google Apps/Suite/Workspace organization. My family is on the grandfathered free plans from way back when and it suites us just fine. As for self-hosting email: at a certain point it may become relevant to move it on-prem and then hire a consultant to run it for you, if you cannot do it yourself. If you can do it yourself, it really depends on the industry. I get a queasy feeling about self-hosting email in a medical, accounting or legal context, but otherwise, you should be fine. I'd seriously consider moving from a VPS to a dedicated server or, at the very least, reliable provider and not the first option on LowEndBox for business-critical email. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-07 12:43 I am responsible for over 30k emails a day for multiple enterprises and I don't see your argument. By design and necessity the big email providers won’t tell you when they’re delaying or blackholing your emails. So your first indication that something is up is when you’re already facing negative consequences for missed emails. Compare that to self hosting a website, where proper monitoring is trivial and industry standard. You can easily setup tools to notify you if your website is down so you can take corrective action before anything bad happens to your business. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blind_guardian23 · 2023-12-07 18:27 Just relay through a big provider if your "life" really depends in it. using a suboptimal Email service will not improve your productivity. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mourasio · 2023-12-07 18:28 For someone as skilled as you, investing some time in reading and comprehension skills instead might pay off. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- blind_guardian23 · 2023-12-07 18:30 you see raising count of tempfails (growing queue) and you can use feedback loops like DMARC-policies. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- seanpmassey · 2023-12-07 18:44 A couple of points here. First, pricing and terms of service can change on any cloud service. And unless you’re using purely open source software with a copyleft license, it can change on self-hosted solutions too. Second, you’re looking for a solution for a small business. You have to ask yourself if managing an email and groupware server is the best and most valuable use of your time. I used to host Exchange in my home lab, but between the death of Technet, issues with inbound and outbound email, trying to keep on top of spam, and patching and securing the service, I decided that an M365 subscription was a better value than self-hosting that particular service. The Exchange Online portion of M365 isn’t perfect. The new spam filter has issues and is quarantining otherwise good (bulk) emails for no apparent reason. If I had a business, I wouldn’t think twice about outsourcing email. There are a lot of things I will host and run for myself…but email can be someone else’s problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Exitcomestothis · 2023-12-07 19:09 I’m always one of the odd ones out on this topic. I had heaps of trouble with their billing crap. I started with essentials for myself, then bought a premium license for an employee. After a while I cancelled that license, and that’s when to trouble started. After cancelling, they kept billing me. I contacted their support and it was just a heap of emails back and forth. They did fix that though, but forget a refund - it’s not their policy! The final straw for me though was when I “upgraded” my license from essentials. I had the same problem. They kept billing me for the essentials despite it being upgraded. This time their support took ages to fix it, and although they admitted it was because the license didn’t upgrade properly- still no refund! That’s when I transferred away and cancelled my account.
