Jellyfin issue when adding new media reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-07 10:02 So i've been using jellyfin for a few weeks and it's almost perfect but i have a small issue My setup as below * Proxmox host with main hdd, and folder named ‘media-server’ shared over smb to other vms to be able to access read/write * Proxmox vm called docker mounting the above smb share at boot using /etc/fstab and can read all media files perfectly, with portainer installed managing all docker containers (including jellyfin, sonarr, radarr) * jellyfin container the issue is, whenever i add new media using sonarr or radarr or anything, jellyfin auto refresh the library as usual but when i try to play the media file it gives me an error [https://imgur.com/a/qpP780Z](https://imgur.com/a/qpP780Z) and jellyfin logs [https://imgur.com/a/NARBXCD](https://imgur.com/a/NARBXCD) file codec [https://imgur.com/a/1lSwbcV](https://imgur.com/a/1lSwbcV) the only way to make it viewable using jellyfin, is by restarting the whole docker vm (not only the jellyfin container) What could be the problem? \*\*I don't have transcoding option turned on issue happens on all devices, browser, ios app, android app ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 10:40 The log you posted contains nothing relevant imo (but your url, which you might want to remove) More interesting would be the logs or the part of the logs which contain the ffmpeg error message. The point is that not every device can play every type of media... If you are trying to send a h265 file to a first gen Chromecast, it needs to be transcoded, or it will fail, since that Chromecast can't play h265.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 10:42 So from what device are you trying to play, with what client, to what device.... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-07 10:44 Ok, but i don;t think it's an issue related to transcoding, Because when i restart the vm everything works as usual And i added ffmpeg log ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 10:45 Doesn't sound like it no, but on the other hand that what the JF error message tries to tell us... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-07 10:48 Jellyfin is hosted on a docker container, on a proxmox ubuntu server vm i'm trying to play on a google chrome browser on laptop, also jellyfin app on ios, same error ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 12:34 Don't see the ffmpeg log ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-07 12:36 updated link ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 12:58 There you have the error (btw. with logs and stuff its much easier to copy as text when asking for help, i.e. on pastebin) file:/rrmedia/Movies/Home Alone (1998)/Home Alone (1990) Bluray-720p.mp4: Invalid argument Just a wild guess: Jellyfin adds the downloaded file to the library before its moved to the proper location by radarr, so it shows it as available while in the background it has been moved? i would check the file location of one of the movies that do not play and where jellyfin THINKS the file is and where it really is on your disk. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 13:01 Also check if you have consistent bind mount volume mapping between the ARR stack and your downloaders... https://trash-guides.info/Hardlinks/Hardlinks-and-Instant-Moves/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Micex · 2023-12-07 13:35 This looks like a transcoding issue. Could try playing it on a desktop client? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 13:36 >i'm trying to play on a google chrome browser on laptop, also jellyfin app on ios, same error they did ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 13:37 Also, restarting the docker environment wouldnt like fix a transcoding error. i think the files get moved in the background and JF doesnt update to the new location unless restarted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Micex · 2023-12-07 13:39 No, try it on native client. Search for Jellyfin client and install it. There is a chance for transcoding on Google chrome as well as iOS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Micex · 2023-12-07 13:40 It does scans periodically, I do not think it’s an immediate scan. You can do a force scan to test it out in the menu. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-07 13:42 >file:/rrmedia/Movies/Home Alone (1998)/Home Alone (1990) Bluray-720p.mp4: Invalid argument I am not the OP, but the error in their transcoding log is this. which does not look like a codec related error but a filesystem related error. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FroSSTII · 2023-12-07 17:43 From the error messages and the comments from other users I suspect your download folder and jellyfin folder are the same? You should avoid it. I would highly recommend following the following file structure: https://wiki.servarr.com/docker-guide#example As well as taking a look at trash guides: https://trash-guides.info/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-08 09:49 >Just a wild guess: Jellyfin adds the downloaded file to the library before its moved to the proper location by radarr, so it shows it as available while in the background it has been moved? No unfortunately, the file is really where JF think it is, after downloading from radarr it copy the file to the proper location and JF sees the new file as normal, btw, i tried turning on/off hardlinks and both have the same issue ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-08 09:51 >No, try it on native client. Search for Jellyfin client and install it I've tried chrome on PC, iOS app, chrome on iPhone, firefox on android, all have the same issue ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-08 09:55 But something is definitely not right with how the movie has been archived. There is a "Home Alone" Folder inside another "Home Alone" Folder. Not saying this is the cause of the error, but I don't think that's how you want it in the first place, or is it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-08 10:02 i don't see what are you talking about? it's only one folder, Here is a screenshot for folder structure for the 3 affected movies i downloaded for testing https://i.imgur.com/bCQpoMp.png ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-08 10:06 Ah sorry it was just mislabeled production year, in one case 1998 and in the other 2000. One way to dig deeper into container debugging is by opening a shell inside the container and checking if the path is accessible to Jellyfin from inside the container, did you try that already? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-08 10:34 Yes i can https://imgur.com/a/RRlWpcR ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-08 10:37 'ls -al' to show the permissions is helpful as well, also for the folder its in. compare to the permissions another folder that works has. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-08 10:40 HYG and compared to other working dir https://imgur.com/a/UhDdDmL ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-08 10:41 and the permissions of the media files themself? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AhmedBarayez · 2023-12-08 10:51 Same permissions ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-08 10:52 Manually execute ffmpeg on the media file. ffmpeg -i \\path\\to\\file.mp4 -f null -
