Ok, is there any way at all to have a worries network drive accessible through my phone and outside home network? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nandeyanen83 · 2023-12-06 20:31 I'm pretty tired of Nextcloud and dockers and whatnot. Maybe I lost a bit of patience but the learning curve is steeper then I thought and I lack time.. I just want my external SSD filled with all family photos and videos to be accessible through phone and outside home network. Bonus if there is ability to assist backup phone media to that drive. Windows 10 and android. Possible? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flicman · 2023-12-06 20:39 Yeah. Nextcloud. Works great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-06 20:47 If you dont want to invest any time in setting things up and learning it, just go buy a ready-to-use NAS from like /r/Synology, install their apps on your phone, done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cNo1Goldsnake · 2023-12-06 20:52 Setup vpn (wireguard) back to your home; easy if you have a static IP, bit more complex if you have dynamic & good luck if you're on CGNAT. Create an SMB share out of your external ssd, and setup access from the phone (can use apps like File Manager+ if you want to keep it simple) & pc's you want to use it. Not sure that's any easier than the other options out there though... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bang_switch40 · 2023-12-06 22:08 This... their photo backup app is great too! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notdoreen · 2023-12-07 00:39 Would wireguard work with Mullvad? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ismaelgokufox · 2023-12-07 04:30 Maybe a WebDAV container could help behind a reverse proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tribak · 2023-12-07 07:15 Don’t worry, be happy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fenty17 · 2023-12-07 07:28 Tailscale if behind CGNAT. Works a treat and easy to set up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nandeyanen83 · 2023-12-07 07:37 I got NordVPN, do I still need wireguard for this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cNo1Goldsnake · 2023-12-07 07:48 Yes this is different, if you're thinking about it from the home network view: we're setting up wireguard for *incoming* traffic, so your mobile devices think they're on your home network - and therefore you can access any home services such as your shared drive or whatever else you setup locally (if you have an office job, you likely have a vpn you'll need to connect to when you work from home to get on your work servers - same principle). Nord etc are vpn's for your *outgoing* traffic, to hide your torrent downloading or your kinky porn addictions from your isp.
