Free Zoho Mail alternatives for using custom email domain?

I tried using Zoho Mail as my mail provider to use my own custom
domain name with my email. It seemed to work well but they're locking
IMAP, POP, SMTP, and even mail forwarding behind a paywall.

I went with them because I kept reading that self-histing your own
email server sucks, and I'm happy to use a provider to save myself the
headaches. I was wondering if anyone here could recommend a free/open
source solution (or self-hosted solution that works) as an
alternative?

I just need one user and ideally would like to add the email to a
client like outlook or the mobile Gmail app if possible, but I'm also
happy with mail forwarding.

If you're using cloudflare they provide email forwarding and you can
use it in combination with gmail to send with your custom domain id.

I have been searching for a self-hosted suite similar to Google
Worksuite.  I found the following:

The combination of these two projects gives you self hosted Google
Worksuite
