What else should I host? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- inthesum · 2023-12-06 12:28 I'm currently using optiplex micro for mainly as media consumption device. With the following apps running as docker Plex, Aarrs, Samba, Qbittorrent, Plex, Adguard home, Tailscale (for external access), Homepage. What else can I self host I tried paperless ngx but I believe it's cpu intensive and I don't have much documents to keep. Can nginx proxy manager replace tailscale for external access? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrkesu · 2023-12-06 12:38 https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/bsp01i/welcome\_to\_rself hosted\_please\_read\_this\_first/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Psy_Doc_Geek · 2023-12-06 12:38 My wife and I really enjoy running our own tv channels at home with either: [ersatztv](https://ersatztv.org/) or [channelsdvr](https://getchannels.com/dvr-server/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 8-16_account · 2023-12-06 12:50 https://awesome-selfhosted.net/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ParaDescartar123 · 2023-12-06 12:51 Does ersatztv simply make your media behave like cable or OTA programming where it is scheduled "randomly" and you tune in to watch or "channel surf" until you hit something you want to watch? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Psy_Doc_Geek · 2023-12-06 12:54 Yes. So, my wife and I have favorite TV shows and movies. We have different channels that will randomly schedule these. We have a Christmas favorites channel and we had a Spooky Vision Halloween Channel. Fun to have on in the background. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-12-06 13:06 this comes up a lot - using the search will give you many threads with many ideas ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ClydeTheGayFish · 2023-12-06 13:07 Paperless is only cpu intensive when ingesting. It crunches the documents and after it’s done it’s done. I also dump instruction manuals into paperless. If it has nothing to do it’s very light on ressources. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- inthesum · 2023-12-06 13:10 I went through this but I couldn't get which one to get since there are many ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-06 13:19 Another one for the lazy pile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 8-16_account · 2023-12-06 13:19 The number of available services doesn't go down, if someone tells you what to host. You'll still have the same amount of choices. Just install anything that sounds cool or useful. That's what you'll end up doing, if someone recommends anything. Additionaly, we have these threads almost daily. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-06 13:24 > I went through this but I couldn't get which one to get since there are many So your solution to that is to ask random people to recommend you random things? ffs ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 5SpeedFun · 2023-12-06 13:41 e-mail /s ---------------------------------------------------------------------- washedFM · 2023-12-06 14:06 npm and tailscale serve different purposes and are not interchangeable ---------------------------------------------------------------------- terAREya · 2023-12-06 14:41 Dont think of it as "what else should I host" but rather "What else do I do online every day, every week, once a month etc". What services are you paying for monthly to complete some task online? Write all these use cases down and then start looking into self hosted alternatives. Where are all you pictures from your phone stored? What about your family members? Where do they store theirs? Where do you keep your passwords? Where do you keep your files? Where do you keep your resume and is it easy to update? Do you have any home automation devices like connected light bulbs, motion sensors, etc? If so what controls them? What search engine(s) do you use? Do you hate that those search providers "know you"? Want a more personalized and private search? How do you take notes? Where are they stored? Are they organized? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notdoreen · 2023-12-06 15:09 How are you hosting samba exactly? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DayshareLP · 2023-12-06 16:40 I have heard many times that nobody show swlfhost an email server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unusableidiot · 2023-12-06 17:12 i've been hosting e-mail for about half a year and it's been pretty good so far :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jrtashjian · 2023-12-06 18:33 I've been hosting email for 6+ years and it's been great. You learn a lot of different systems, securing them, and monitoring them. It's a lot of fun! Start with a non-critical email account until you get the hang of it before hosting critical ones. Ignore the nay-sayers. We're self-hosters! Host whatever the hell you like! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 5SpeedFun · 2023-12-06 19:51 Same for me. About 15 years for me but for a new self hosted it may be tough. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ParaDescartar123 · 2023-12-06 20:00 That's insane, and genius at the same time. Thanks. It's like making your own channels. Now I must try it. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- root_switch · 2023-12-06 20:27 Another weekly “what else should I host” post. The correct answer should always be “host apps that you need, don’t just look for things to host that you will never use. A good starting point is https://github.com/awesome-selfhosted/awesome-selfhosted” ---------------------------------------------------------------------- poulain_ght · 2023-12-07 04:39 SearxNG, and mail (Postfix,Dovecot) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dcgog · 2023-12-07 05:15 We need a self hostable app to query all the what should I host questions.
