Don't fully understand use of Radarr reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLastEclipse82 · 2023-12-06 10:11 Everyone here says it is so much better to use Radarr and sonarr and you will never want to go back but I don't seem to see how to use it to help. How do I access Radarr from another device? If I have to use the server plex is running on and type in the movie to get, how is that any different to just going into a torrent site and typing up the movie I want to get. Technically it might be slightly faster but barely enough to be worth the struggle of setting it up and if can't add movies from a device other than the server itself. I tried using it but is that all it is? What's the benefit other than don't have to look for shows and movies myself, although already know sites that are good anyway. Also it seems it is better using Usenet over torrents but none of them seem to be free or need an invite to so that seems useless to me as I am confused as how to set up Usenet indexes and find any that I can use. Also do I need docker? That was something else I saw mentioned when trying to set Radarr up with prowlarr. I thought it would be like in the plex app I could just search a movie up and it would automatically download it and add to library but I guess not or am not using it properly/ to full potential. Any help would be greatly appreciated ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RedditSlayer2020 · 2023-12-06 10:26 I think the automation of it is appealing, like for example you want to watch a certain TV series so the tools you mention grab a new episode automatically ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thomasdarko · 2023-12-06 10:28 1. You access radarr and sonarr from a web browser. 2. The *arr apps can monitor future releases, auto download them and quality upgrade current ones. 3. as stated above much more convenient. 4. True, Usenet is preferred but I only use torrents and it works fine. 4. Can’t answer that, but I believe using Docker is much more convenient. 5. That’s kind of one purpose, so I guess you’re not using it well. Here’s some guides to help you: [Trash Guides](https://trash-guides.info) [Wiki Servarr](https://wiki.servarr.com) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Quique1222 · 2023-12-06 10:30 You use something like jellyseerr. Where the users get synced with jellyfin and anyone with a jellyfin account can request things. Then jellyseerr sends that automatically to radarr/sonarr that then downloads it and moves it to the library folder. And then bazarr downloads subtitles automatically. That's my setup anyway ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Micex · 2023-12-06 10:34 It looks like you are confused between arr services and media services. The arr services are a bunch of automations help users automate the tasks of searching, downloading, and cataloguing. Take radarr for example and Dune 2 as the movie you wanna watch. The manual way: You wait for the movie to be in theatres and then check every other week for a release on a site of your preference. One fine day you saw the movie listed and download it. Then you are excited to watch it. Once downloaded you play it only to see that it’s not 1080p but a camrip. So you have to repeat the whole process till you get the right one. The automated way. You go into radarr today and add dune part 2 as a movie you want to watch. Thats it. Now you just have to wait for the movie to appear in your plex. Lastly media services. For plex just point it to where you keep your media. Plex will just scan and show you what is available and you just watch it as you need. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tnt1232007 · 2023-12-06 10:38 What if the movie is not leaked yet, so you have to come back to the torrent site and check another time. It's radarr job to do it automatically. Besides manual adding in radarr UI, radarr can auto add movies from: \- Monitored collection (Movies > Collections): like Saw Collection or Spider-Man collection \- Added lists (Settings > Lists): like Trakt Anticipated List or Steven Lu list \- Via its API, so other people beside yourself can request using either Overseerr, Jellyseerr or Requesterr... There're probably other ways but these are the thing that I am using, also look into Overseerr, it's a great place to discover movies I found. Same with sonarr basically. About access on other devices, I don't know what do you mean but you can do that easily using the browser as long as you are in the same network. There're even great android app that allow you to manage them on your phone. If you want to access it ouside of your network, it's another story. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- madroots2 · 2023-12-06 10:39 I think those years, where *arr apps were useful, are over. Just use stremio like normal person and leave radarr for data hoarders. I have no interest of downloading anything, actually I just want to watch series and never ever have its 1gb file laying around. I mean I have internet, I can just stream it again if I wish. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLastEclipse82 · 2023-12-06 10:41 So for adding future movies, in radarr, I go to add new, type up movie e.g. dune: part two, click it and press add movie. Then it will show up in radarr library as missing, but when it comes out it will download it automatically. Is that correct? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Micex · 2023-12-06 10:42 Bingo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lesigh · 2023-12-06 10:48 1. I have a website my friends and family can lookup and add movies TV shows themselves (overseerr) 2. My discord users can easily add any movie TV show themselves in a channel 3. You can auto import lists like upcoming movies and TV 4. It will download the proper encoding and audio formats for direct play and properly place and name the files ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xiakit · 2023-12-06 10:52 Overseerr let's radarr and sonarr really shine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dummptyhummpty · 2023-12-06 10:57 The profiles feature is what really makes it worth it. If it can’t initially find the quality I want, it will keep track until it’s available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PiratesOfTheArctic · 2023-12-06 11:09 Just jumping on the thread, is there a way to specify file quality type as in, 4k/blueray vs camrip? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scalade · 2023-12-06 11:19 Yes :) & there are preset quality profiles, but you can also define your own ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gx1400 · 2023-12-06 11:19 https://trash-guides.info/Sonarr/sonarr-setup-quality-profiles/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- wryterra · 2023-12-06 11:23 Radarr automates the acquisition of media. So with Radarr you can still use usenet but you're right that you'll need accounts with indexers to do so. Once you have indexers configured (torrent or usenet) it comes into its own. Basically the advantage of Radarr over doing it yourself is that one search will: Search all torrent and usenet accounts you have set up, prioritise which release to grab based on configurable profiles, download, unpack (with unpackarr integration), move, rename, and then continue to monitor in case a better version of the file becomes available within your profile settings. It'll also notify Plex to update its library when a file is imported or upgraded. It can also notify you through various connections. Basically it's fire and forget for a movie, you can put its name into Radarr when you first see the movie announced and it'll automatically grab and upgrade through camrips to screeners to HD or 4K depending on your settings as the releases become available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PiratesOfTheArctic · 2023-12-06 11:25 Thankyou! There isn't a day that goes by where i'm not learning from the sub! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PiratesOfTheArctic · 2023-12-06 11:26 Thankyou! I will read this today, I've recently installed radarr on my vps and am finding it significantly easier than the usual manual searches ---------------------------------------------------------------------- europacafe · 2023-12-06 11:29 When I see any interesting new movie trailers and I definitely want to watch it when it is actually available, I just use Radarr to find it and save it. Radarr will automatically download torrent tracker and coordinate with my qbittorrent to download it, and notify me. It's like requesting a future movie and forget about it till it is served to your server with notification. You can also set the movie quality, encoding types, and size. Radarr will find it when available. Sonarr is the same but with future episodes served to you when they are available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- micalm · 2023-12-06 11:35 There's also Jellyseerr for Jellyfin users. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarinkhan · 2023-12-06 11:41 not only that, but it will place it in a folder where it should be, properly named so that plex/jellyfin can work on it. You can also ask for some quality, then ask for a better one, and it will automatically check for the better version until it has it and can replace the worst one. You can also connect it with a service for subtitles. A use of this is also that your friends/so/parents/little brother/whatever can make requests without ever touching your torrent client. Obviously it is convenient, but the effect is way stronger on tv shows, where you have lots of episodes. Manual downloading can result in plenty of variying quality files, mismatched names, sometimes you get the polish version with a guy talking over the film to make the polish voice-over (if you never got this, it is really something : ONE guy that is obviously not an actor simply reads ALL the lines of ALL characters, with a super monotone voice...) Also, i never got porn disguised as a normal movie or tv show, unlike when manual downloading. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarinkhan · 2023-12-06 11:42 ALso, if you already have a media collection of variying quality, it can work on that over time. And it seems to know how to enforce quality type better than i do when manually doing it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Perpetual_Nuisance · 2023-12-06 11:49 If you use Overseerr, which integrates with Radarr and Sonarr, it's even easier: ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SoftPois0n · 2023-12-06 11:51 Here are few more **Guides to help you with the setup:** * Sonarr: [https://simkl.com/apps/sonarr/](https://simkl.com/apps/sonarr/) * Radarr: [https://simkl.com/apps/radarr/](https://simkl.com/apps/radarr/) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Adventurous_Bet_1920 · 2023-12-06 11:53 Install LunaSea or Nzb360 on your phone and then when you're in your home network (or if you set up a VPN) you can easily manage Sonarr and Radarr from the Couch. Another option is to add Plex Watchlist (assuming you use Plex for playback as it offers a Netflix-like experience) as a source to Sonarr and Radarr. That way when you add a show you want to watch to your watchlist on Plex it will automatically download as soon as it becomes available. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SchmeepyDooDoo · 2023-12-06 11:56 Even doing it manually man; radarr searches ALL your trackers simultaneously, you choose the perfect size/quality/encode for you, then it downloads it and hardlinks it directly into your plex library while retaining the torrent seed and renaming as needed to be recognised in plex. It saves a LOT of hassle. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rasg · 2023-12-06 12:04 i agree with, but this is a selfhosted sub. get ready for the downvotes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- madroots2 · 2023-12-06 12:09 hah yeah, forgot what sub I am on. I just shot my opinion when I saw the post. You are right though, \*arr does a good job for self- hosters. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mauro2510 · 2023-12-06 12:21 Link up your imdb watchlist to really automate movie watching ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLastEclipse82 · 2023-12-06 12:35 Mmh, yeah is there any way to access outside my network? Does overseerr allow that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Micex · 2023-12-06 12:57 look into Overseerr or Jellyseerr to supercharge your experience ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scalade · 2023-12-06 13:11 if you need any help setting that up just shoot me a PM, the wiki is really good tho! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jay-Five · 2023-12-06 13:57 If your primary source is torrents (vs. usenet or realdebrid you will need to keep the files until ratio is built regardless. That's where the \*arrs maintain benefit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jay-Five · 2023-12-06 13:59 If you torrent, you can set up radarr to auto-grab the media resulting in faster ratio building. Plus flags such as "freeleech", help there as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- madroots2 · 2023-12-06 14:37 Rd user here so... no ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jay-Five · 2023-12-06 14:45 no to which? Do you have to have a membership in private trackers? Am I going to get DCMA notices from my ISP? Does it add the file from my system to seed the torrent? Ugh....I hate that I've reached the age that things are getting confusing. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PressRT · 2023-12-06 18:11 Jellyseerr is a gamechanger, especially as individual jellyfin users on your server can make their own requests! My family loves using my server now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jay-Five · 2023-12-06 18:26 which is what I said.... "Primary source is torrents" refers to a user using a torrent client, tracker, etc. Sure, you can HnR pirate bay, but maintaining cred on a private tracker requires keeping files until ratio is obtained. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nonlinear_nyc · 2023-12-06 19:09 Thanks for the question... I understood the popularity of -arr apps but not their usefulness, too. I guess video reviews have to hide the piracy aspect and their euphemisms make it... Not clear. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- modernDayKing · 2023-12-07 06:08 Not only that, but im setup where I just add it to my plex watchlist (or my trakt watchlist which sync both ways to each other) and once its added it just goes out gets it, in my preferred format and quality, moves it to plex, renames it cleanly to my standards. So for me, my experience is to add to a watchlist, usually from the trakt app as I read and browse reviews. then wait for a push notification from plex that its been added. As a lifelong pirate whore it changed my life entirely. #holyGrail achieved
