What automation service will be best for my use case? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CrashOverride93 · 2023-12-06 09:01 I already have NodeRED and FileFlows, but I use the first with my Home Assistant server, and the second one with the multimedia server. - NodeRED: automate tasks with HW devices. - FileFlows: re-encodes movies and tv series based on a schedule to save space. I read about n8n and seems it's a really good software, but I already read some threads talking about it has changed ultimately regard to its capabilities. I mean, that it now asks the user to unlock certain functions by paying extra fees. Or I'm wrong? I plan to use whatever service you recommend here, in a VPS to automate tasks which consists in interacting with a MySQL database to check/update/delete/create some data on it. Maybe other tasks that will be file based. It won't be exposed, only working internally. As I didn't use NodeRED nor FileFlows to interact with databases, I would like to hear your opinion about it. Thank you! There are some features locked behind the paywall (SSO, LDAP, Secrets, prod/dev server). I wish I could use LDAP, but really I'm the only one that uses my N8N so ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- louisj · 2023-12-06 09:48 I use N8N and the features which are paid are only enterprise level stuff, nothing you would ever need at home ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CrashOverride93 · 2023-12-06 09:52 Thank you for the info. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CrashOverride93 · 2023-12-06 09:53 Mmm, seems that could be features or options that I won't need by now. Thank you for the details. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jxbi · 2023-12-06 11:26 I would choose n8n. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- purgedreality · 2023-12-06 13:59 I loved n8n, but [ever since I saw this interaction with the founder](https://community.n8n.io/t/a-new-license-for-n8n/11873/13) I've considered it pre-fail/degraded/EIP ([enshittification](https://w ww.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/mar/11/users-advertisers-we-are- all-trapped-in-the-enshittification-of-the-internet) in progress). Here's the [official license change announcement](https://blog.n8n.io/announcing-new-sustainable-use- license/) from n8n. That is just my personal opinion though. I'm not discouraging you from running it, just [making you aware](https://youtu.be/3D8TEJtQRhw?t=10). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- anrikaz · 2023-12-06 14:48 n8n for the win, no others come close to them atm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ajtatum · 2023-12-07 01:34 I've use n8n for over a year now and it's been absolutely amazing in what it can do. The biggest feature for me is being able to load npm modules and run custom scripts. I use it for automating posts to WordPress, sends emails from Webhooks (ie: Duplicacy), handling stuff from home assistant, moving files, and a ton more. While you would need to willing to learn some code to take full advantage, it's worth it. There are some features that are pay walled, but they're features I wouldn't really use as they're geared towards enterprises. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Butthurtz23 · 2023-12-07 06:35 n8n is actually more user-friendly and easier to use compared to NodeRed. However, NodeRed is considered more robust and is best suited for those who are already familiar with coding. I have personally given fileflows a try, and while it is well-designed, it doesn't always meet my needs.
