Virtualized NAS on ProxMox reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- oh19contp · 2023-12-06 07:43 Hello, as the title states, I am looking to virtualize a NAS in my homelab. I currently have Proxmox running with 2 nodes. I currently have TrueNAS Core spun up on a VM, but i dont think i did enough research into the proper tool for the job. Should I continue with TrueNAS and use the Samba/NFS built in or would it be better to run something like OMV or NextCloud if i already have a functioning hypervisor and only need network storage? Thanks in advance! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- getgoingfast · 2023-12-06 07:59 Depends on the disk structure. No issues running TrueNAS as a VM if you plan to do native disk passthrough for direct ZFS support. Assigning disk as PVE storage and using it for TrueNAS while possible, is not a recommended practice. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nik_h_75 · 2023-12-06 10:15 I've done omv in its own VM (used the omv debian ISO) and passed through the disks (usb) - works like a charm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DayshareLP · 2023-12-06 11:34 I use proxmox as my Nas. I installed samba and nfs-kernel-seever on proxmox itself. I works very good and hasn't failed me once. The huge advantage is that I have direct access to my disk or to my ZFS pool. If you use ZFS you can make a new dataset for your Nas and share it using samba smb. It's super easy and you never have to assign a fixed size for your Nas space. You can do the same with NFS for proxmox disk storage. I even use tgt to host iSCSI shares on proxmox. TLDR: I stalk everything (samba,NFS,tgt(iSCSI)) directly on proxmox host. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- New_d_pics · 2023-12-06 15:28 Are you running a single node or multiple? I've originally set up NFS server on the host sharing from within a proxmox ZFS pool. Now adding 2 further nodes, I'm finding this may not be ideal when trying to migrate containers between hosts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thePZ · 2023-12-06 16:25 If I wanted to use ZFS or already had ZFS pools I would probably set up a TrueNAS VM to handle that I’ve moved away from ZFS in recent years and have moved to mergerfs for my non-critical data/drives, so I just have that running in a minimized Ubuntu server VM and all it’s doing is handling mergerfs and sharing to my other VMs via NFS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BCIT_Richard · 2023-12-06 18:46 I run proxmox on all of my machines, then run everything in a VM from there, my website and associated services are all hosted on a UnraidOS VM, never had any issues. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BCIT_Richard · 2023-12-06 18:49 Yeah, I'm getting ready to do this. I have 4x HP Z2 Mini Workstations I've installed PVE 8.0 on, and configured them all as individual nodes, I'm waiting to figure out how I want to handle storage before I begin. I'm also a complete noob when it comes to storage, zfs, scsi, san, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- New_d_pics · 2023-12-06 23:55 Yeah I'm newb also, did you ZFS all your boot drives on install? As long as you name all the boot drive zpools the same they should be migrateable(word?) across nodes, but I'm too stunned to figure out how to share my media storage as "migrateable" mount points, or if that's even a thing....shit ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jimmygle · 2023-12-07 08:47 Been running TrueNAS via ProxMox with disk pass thru of 15 disks for years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BCIT_Richard · 2023-12-07 14:24 No... No I did not. I only configured their IPs and hostnames so a reinstall won't hurt yet. I really do need to do some research on the topic though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- VVaterTrooper · 2023-12-09 18:50 Have you looked into adding SnapRAID to your MergerFS? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thePZ · 2023-12-10 17:36 Yes, always something in the back of my mind, but I’ve never wanted to commit the money to the extra drives. I’ve got 1Gbps internet, and don’t store anything irreplaceable on my drives, so I only have to redownload 1 drive’s worth of stuff if I lose a drive. Parity drives for my 14 drive 122TB pool wouldn’t exactly be cheap…
