Not sure what else to do/try reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZoftOS · 2023-12-06 00:41 Been in the process of setting up a media server to host my personal collection of 4K UHD movies I buy on disc, rip, and then host. Currently my set-up is as follows: 12900K 32GB DDR4 100TB in HDDs 1TB NVMe \---------------------- Running Jellyfin on Linux.... I made sure I have all the necessary things installed to allow for me to do Intel QSV transcoding and the like and for this specific example I have I can confirm I am trying to connect remotely to my server to watch a movie that has to be transcoded because the client device I'm watching it on is not 4K. Both the location hosting the home-server and the current location I am at have Fiber internet (1gig up & down) and both the server and my client device are hard-wired in and at the time of me making this post my network speeds show as follows: Client Location: 950Mbps Download 670Mbps Upload Server Location: 997Mbps Download 982Mbps Upload Now, I have been trying to figure out why exactly I cannot seem to not have Jellyfin stuttering like an absolute mess when I'm transcoding, but it's not even just that, there are times where I am Direct Playing my movie files remotely and it's stuttering like crazy. Ultimately with the amount I put in (in hopes to) trying to fix this issue I am at this point out of ideas and frankly disappointed in the overall performance of hosting my own home media server and I am just hoping one of the many helpful people of this sub-reddit could maybe nudge me in the direction that I may have missed/overlooked. I can provide whatever you may need to assist me in terms of log files and the like.... Regardless if anyone can help me, thanks for taking the time to view this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- from-nibly · 2023-12-06 02:07 What kind of hard drives do you have? And in what configuration? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZoftOS · 2023-12-06 02:17 12x 18TB EXOS HDDs 6x6 Mirror ZFS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flicman · 2023-12-06 03:05 You're using client apps? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZoftOS · 2023-12-06 03:22 Yeah so far I can confirm I have this issue when using any of the following clients: Jellyfin-web (remote -- transcoding) -- Windows PC Amazon Firestick 4K Max (remote -- direct play) Roku TV (remote -- direct play) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-06 03:25 Have you tried any other app like Plex? Nothing in your setup indicates an issue, especially direct play should work with no stutter since all it does is steaming the video file raw to the client. I don't know Jellyfin but does it have limits for WAN connected clients? Like on LAN you have no limit but via WAN there's a default limit? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 8ballfpv · 2023-12-06 03:26 I had bad stuttering in my playbacks when I first setup jellyfin but there is a setting in the clients that you can change in regard to the playback and how its handled. Once I changed this, perfect playback on that device. the issue is I cant remember what that setting was off top of my head and I dont have the app to hand to look it up. lol Helpful I know... :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZoftOS · 2023-12-06 03:26 I think there only is if I impose such a thing myself? I could be wrong though. I'm going to try some of the other media server flavors and see if I yield any better results. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZoftOS · 2023-12-06 03:30 I think what you may be referring to is the Playback > Streaming > Bandwidth Rate. I read many posts of people having it set to 'Auto' and it stuttering, but manually setting it to 120Mbps (4K) fixed it for them. Sadly didn't resolve my issue(s). :/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- flicman · 2023-12-06 03:47 I had to move to the Jellyfin Windows App since no browsers support x265 transcoding and all of my stuff (most of it) is on that the last few years. I hear Safari somehow decided to pay to support it, but you won't catch me using THAT. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 8ballfpv · 2023-12-06 04:00 it may indeed be that. Try setting it to a much lower setting maybe. just to see if it works...? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- omsfah · 2023-12-06 08:59 I've been walking down this road and finally cracked it myself the other day. I would advice to look at the client settings and specifically hardware decoding. I spent a day testing all the settings and found HDR as the culprit (I completely forgot that Linux doesn't like HDR...) If you send some more info on your client setup I might be able to assist. My solution was to do a clean install of windows on the client, change some settings in jellyfin client tab, and then update every driver/ firmware/ bios I could find. I also found a hevc 10 bit test film called jellyfish (some forum post) that was immensely helpful, as it was without HDR and audio, so it helped the troubleshooting along. (MPV plays this fine, jellyfin played this fine, wait, why does video A work flawlessly and B not at all. *Reads media info* ahhh, HDR) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hiddengiggles · 2023-12-06 12:19 Do you have jellyfin behind a reverse proxy? If there are other apps that are touching the http requests you have to check them too. Reverse proxies will have specific settings for streaming and buffering you will want to look at. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZoftOS · 2023-12-06 15:53 As sad as it is to say, and as much as I'd absolutely love to use a service that is open-sourced like Jellyfin, I installed Plex last night and paid for 1 month of Plex Pass (just to give it the best shot of being what I am looking for) and tested it across multiple clients, remotely, and it just works absolutely perfect. I couldn't begin to explain why but if that's the case I guess for my use case I'll have to go this route. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whipdancer · 2023-12-07 20:34 I keep remote optimized copies of all my movies. The additional space requirement is a drop in the bucket and I can play them on everything from a 6 year old fire tablet to my phone while on cellular. They still look pretty decent when played back on a regular TV at our friends house. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZoftOS · 2023-12-09 20:23 Yeah because I enjoy the layout and such of Jellyfin what I ended up doing is just having 2 separate libraries being my 4K rips of my UHD discs and then I am beginning a 1080p rips library from the standard blu-rays typically included with UHDs. Seems to be working for my use- case now. That being said the part that is odd to me still, and mind you I recently just got into this hobby is that while I know based on many posts and articles that transcoding is demanding and all that but I thought with the machine I spec'd out and built for this specific and only use case along with my fiber internet it would be more than enough to handle transcoding and serving dumbed down versions of my UHD rips? Is transcoding 4Ks down to 1080p still just a rough thing to do? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whipdancer · 2023-12-09 21:59 >Is transcoding 4Ks down to 1080p still just a rough thing to do? That's my current understanding of it. I'm no expert, don't really want to be one. I just want it to work. The path of least resistance for me is UHD + a remote optimized version. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZoftOS · 2023-12-09 22:19 What exactly do you use as your 'remote optimized version'? Just curious, as of now I just have as I said a 4K UHD disc rip along with the standard BR disc rip to access when I'm trying to watch on a lower-spec device. Should I be lowering the quality of audio down to something like AAC/E-AC3? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whipdancer · 2023-12-09 23:31 1080p, AAC 2channel, no bigger than about 10-12gb. I normally include multiple audio streams to support multi-channel options, but make the AAC 2ch the default. For example AC3 5.1 & DD 5.1.
