Self Hosted Omegle reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Promptier · 2023-12-05 22:26 After omegle shutdown several weeks ago, I have been missing the experience of not only connecting with random strangers, but those whose interest match my own with the help of the interest tag system. This feature is missing in any Omegle clone, such as [ome.tv](https://ome.tv) or [omegle.vc](https://omegle.vc). I truely miss this feature as it has lead to most friends I have made on the platform. Connecting with a random stranger has a chance of kicking it off, but the interest tags drastically increase chances of forming a real connection, that is, if you primarily are interested in things over people. Such as having interest in peculiar niches or any given hobby. I have a great interest in self-hosting something like this myself, and making it open to the public. There exist open source self-hosting solutions such as Matrix and the Fediverse. A potential video chatting software would be Element Calls. The tricky part I have faced in the past is, well, everything... Upon trying to install and configure both Synapse and Dendrite, it simply overwhelmed me with the Docker Composing of a database, auth service, web server, and so on. I was in over my head. To first gain experience, I currently am working on a smaller project to get my feet in the water. I have installed Ubuntu server on an old Thinkcentre and am configuring Apache 2 web server, SSH to remote in. I plan to not virtualize anything until/if necessary. It will simply host a website of a public CV, and other info about me. I have already purchased and configured (a record, cname, etc.) the domain name from the registrar and am hopeful for future progress. I hope to interact with this community to meet people, share ideas, and for me to continue to provide updates if anyone is interested. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-06 00:11 lol ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Promptier · 2023-12-06 01:21 ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- beesuptomyknees · 2023-12-06 04:45 The last thing I want to do is poop on parties, but from your post it does appear you are in over your head. I’d recommend looking into WebRTC and other p2p protocols. The cool thing is, you could actually do this will a small amount of resources because with NAT traversal you don’t really have to host any of it, just host the “orchestrator”. My advice is to just keep on learning and poking around. Then eventually you’ll be able to piece together what it will take to build a real platform.
