Need ideas reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- t2noob · 2023-12-05 05:49 So I have an extra tower laying around, used to be my old desktop, but now I rarely use it. It has a dual fedora/windows 10 set up. 32gb ram Ryzen 3(I think ) 1080 ti GPU No WiFi 6 One nic Anything i could dedicate this tower to? Keep in mind I have a Dell r720 Where i run the following: Plex All the arrs Ollama models Minecraft server for my son Wire guard Pihole Proxy manager VsCode Kasm Paperlessngx Dishy Vaultwarden Whoogle Gitea Ntfy Immich A Ubuntu VM A windows VM On vps: Simplelogin ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AllTheModzAreCancer · 2023-12-05 05:55 [Set up a 24/7 stream.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-05 09:05 And another one too lazy to even use the search, let alone look at the sidebar. * [What next?](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=what+next& restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all) * [What should i host?](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=w hat+should+host&restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all ) * [Get started](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=get+start ed&restrict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all) * [Beginner](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=beginner&res trict_sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all) * [Bored](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/search?q=bored&restrict_ sr=on&include_over_18=on&sort=relevance&t=all) * and so many more And of course, look at the subreddit sidebar, find the [awesome- selfhosted list](https://github.com/Kickball/awesome-selfhosted) and work your way through that. There is also a big fat sticky ["Please read this first"](https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/bsp01i/ welcome_to_rselfhosted_please_read_this_first/) thread that you ignored. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- t2noob · 2023-12-05 13:23 I did, but didnt see anything that would take advantage of the hardware, i already run a most of the self Host regulars, etc. I want an idea that will take advantage of the hardware. Ive looked through the awesome self host list etc. Most of the regular self Hosted stuff on the threads you provided suggested, since apparently im lazy, i already run and would not take advantage of the hardware or could easily run on the r720. Best idea so far would be running the llama models on the tower, but i don't think the models justify running the hardware when i have a capable r720 that is already running 24/7. Don't assume i did not look at threads before asking for suggestions on the hardware. Im more asking about the if you Guys believe i should turn the tower into something or let it be. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phizulation · 2023-12-05 14:19 I have an old PC similar to that that I use only for Plex. I also have a Dell r610 that I use for the arrs and stuff. The way I think of it is, I use the r610 for all the processing(Downloading, unpacking, arrs, uptimakuma) and the PC with my 1060 for delivery and storage(108TB for Plex, Photos, Comics, ect.) It's a bit over kill but at least when i'm downloading a season of something through usenet the unpacking processes don't interfere with the streaming my users are getting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-12-05 14:28 There’s nothing special about the hardware. Anything you run on the dell you can run on the tower. The only exceptions are things that might take advantage of a GPU, which is mostly transcoding. An option is to use the tower it as a backup/failover server. Overkill for home deployments, but can be a fun learning experience. I’d personally sell it though, or use it instead of the dell since the dell is loud and power hungry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- t2noob · 2023-12-05 15:45 I was thinking about using the GPU for transcoding, but for my family the plex/arrs have not been an issue on the r720 without a GPU. I was thinking about a llama model with GPU, but i don't really see a use for it. I have a llama model with enough ram and vcpus running on the r720 that I don't really use and runs we'll enough. Guess maybe ill just run desktop for my little one to tinker with. I was also thinking about just using a vdi client so my little can connect and interact with the proxmox server services. Having the tower running that just seemed like a waste when i can have a Chromebook that could do the samething. Maybe i could do a backup server... but like you said seems like overkill. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-12-05 15:50 I agree with it all and still would personally sell the machine since there's no use for it. Unless you have a trusting family member where you can set it up as a remote backup server. Maybe even a VPN exit node.
