RPi zero w is a beast! reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok_Independent_3166 · 2023-12-04 19:41 So far we have Freshrss, Pi-hole, Unbound, Shadowsocks, Wireguard, ufw (will be replacing with just iptables once time permits), fail2ban and its barely using resources.. maybe because its just background and not very active at the moment, still its a very capable machine with low power consumption! Very happy with this tiny device. Obviously no docker running as that would kill it I think For interested: CPU / Memory usage: [https://imgur.com/nJQTTQb](https://imgur.com/nJQTTQb) It has camera module connected but haven't had time to play with this one yet! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SillyLilBear · 2023-12-04 20:26 It doesn't take much resources to be idle. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-04 21:20 Its a beast but Docker would kill it? ... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KoppleForce · 2023-12-04 22:53 When you start running low on ram you can increase your swap to help a bit. It allows me to run docker on my rpi3, which I think is not drastically more powerful than the 0. I’ve only got one container running on it though (linkding) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- muoshuu · 2023-12-05 01:55 Definitely do NOT enable swap when booting from a Micro SD card unless you’re okay with the card dying within the year. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KoppleForce · 2023-12-05 02:23 Oh damn lol maybe I should turn that off rofl. The website guide where I read how to do it didn’t give any sort of warning on that either. I have nothing important running on it any way, so maybe I’ll just see how long it takes for the card to die. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SnooPets20 · 2023-12-05 02:25 IIRC it's an 8 dollar device. It being capable of hosting ANYTHING is already an achievement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-12-05 03:06 By chance is it the "Raspberry Pi Zero W 2"? I feel like they snuck in the "2" release. The main difference is it is quads core from what I can tell. Better for multi-tasking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- selfexpression101 · 2023-12-05 03:10 Haha, love the satire. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Bee_7194 · 2023-12-05 03:29 Really? With only 512MB of memory? 👀 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-12-05 03:31 [deleted] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- No_Bee_7194 · 2023-12-05 03:31 😎SanDisk Max Endurance, 15 years guarantee. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Korkman · 2023-12-05 10:25 Use zram. compressing RAM is the way to go ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElEd0 · 2023-12-05 13:04 I've been running my homelab in Rpis booting from SD cards with around 4Gb SWAP 24/7 for years now and I've never had a problem. I've changed the SD card 3 times by now but not because it failed. In fact the last SD card I used for like 4-5 years (24/7, 95% of the time) now I am using it in my smartphone and works flawlessly ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElEd0 · 2023-12-05 13:07 I recently started migrating nearly all my services to docker and they dont add as much overhead as one would expect. Granted I am running in a RPI4 but the RAM would still be below \~600MB if it was'nt for jellyfin which is nuts and consumes nearly 2GB while idle.
