Self hosted vs Proton / mix of services reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ejz9 · 2023-12-04 07:39 So someone posted about wanting to get off of Google. Great! I love it and I myself and probably others can feel the same. I myself used NextCloud for cloud storage as it’s reliable and when self hosted is limited by how much storage I care for. For my passwords I use vaultwarden. I love Bitwarden itself and probably may pay for it after college but for now I can’t justify it Lastly I’m in the mix of Gmail’s do using proton at my important email. I like the idea of proceeding this way but switching all mail to proton also wouldn’t be bad I’m my opinion. I don’t pay for any greater their then my initial 1GB. For my VPN I use Nord as I got a good deal. I’m tempted to switch to proton though after my two years which is why I’m here. Is proton worth it? The plan in question at least being unlimited. I know the VPN is good and I’ve heard good about it. I also somewhat know the email is good. Hell I’d self host email but I don’t really care as theirs mixed bags so it’s out of the question unless it’s cheaper here. Otherwise I have no use for 500gb of cloud storage nor their new password manager which probably isn’t bad but I use self hosted Bitwarden. My idea is proton pass could be a backup of my password manager but that’s kinda no different than me just backing up my data. I use NextCloud for storage and just want a decent email and good VPN. I could get away with their free plan though as deleting emails is good. If I really need to keep one I can make a “hard” digital copy to store in NextCloud or in something like paperless-ngx. So if I don’t need 500gb of storage, just need a vpn to get the latest Ubuntu iso and can store my data and all my eggs in my own basket where I regulate and backup myself, why shouldn’t I? Or what maybe should I do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GolemancerVekk · 2023-12-04 18:31 I'll give you the usual warning about Proton: being encrypted means that you can't use mobile email apps, you have to use their own, which sometimes refuses to work and you just gotta wait it out (they even added this to their FAQ). On PC you have to either use their webmail or install an app they call a "bridge" if you want to use a regular desktop email client with normal IMAP/SMTP. Also, they don't offer built-in alias support, you have to use SimpleLogin. My personal opinion is that encrypted mailbox is a gimmick; it will not solve any of your problems and only add more hoops to jump through. If you don't specifically need any of their services and you already use BitWarden then find a better email provider which supports regular IMAP/SMTP and offers more aliases with every plan. [Here's a starting point.](https://european-alternatives.eu/category/email-providers) For VPN I would suggest Mullvad instead.
