HETZNER Cloud or Dedicsted Server? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jsusapple · 2023-12-04 00:04 Hey Guys, I currently have 3 vps servers from a small server provider for CIA 80€. I pay a lot for 2 TB of storage here. I'm currently thinking about switching to HETZNER servers, here you can get the HETZNER Cloud arm servers with the option of taking a storage box for CIA €30 per month, I would have 5 TB of storage, 16 cores and 32 GB of RAM. What is important here is that a jellyfin server should run. Does it make more sense to host it on a dedicated server? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-04 00:51 I will always be of the opinion that on-premises storage is always going to be cheaper than cloud storage. Having said that, I have moved almost entirely away from virtual private servers in my infrastructure, unless I need a specific geographic location (cheaper to rent a $5/month droplet in India than to find a dedicated box there...). Hetzner is very reasonable in terms of price/performance, but it does require some hefty investment. Their 4x16tb boxes cost €90/month, but feel very appealing from a €/TB standpoint. The general rule of thumb is $6/TB/month for cloud storage\*, so if you are getting cheaper than that, you are getting a good deal. \* This is a *general* rule. You can get cheaper storage if you do AWS Glacier (or equivalent), but I make a distinction between "cloud *storage*" and "cold storage". Cold storage is a whole different kettle of fish. To quote a wise (but misanthropic) man: "When encountering a goldmine, one needs to prepare himself for the shaft." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tivin-i · 2023-12-04 02:10 I would reach/test out and understand what is the bandwidth and read/write speed you are going to get on on a storage box - mind you, these are two different services that are managed and hosted in a different way. Hetzner servers as a default option are on a 1gbps connection while the vps are on (10gig?). For the servers to have a 10gig connection you need to add-on those features - a network card and an uplink. If you are looking at the marketplace, do note that you can't upgrade components or uplink. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tivin-i · 2023-12-04 02:20 Glacier is a nice solution though you're better off to buy a hard drive if you don't really care about how fast you can reupload the data or if it's something that you won't lose sleep if it gets corrupted. Calculating the US zones (Which if I remember correctly are the cheapest ones) - say 10TB of data on Deep Archive (Cheapest and Access once or twice a year and restore within 12 hours). Data storage - $0.00099 \* 10000gb = $10 a month for storage. Data transfer (Per full retrieval) - first 10TB a month @ $0.09 = $900. Your yearly cost of retrieval once would be \~$1,020. For a Single retrieval from glacier deep storage you could buy 4x20tb drives. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-04 02:25 Or buy tape. Which is, honestly, what I would do if you're considering spending $1000/year on backups. Upfront investment, depending on which gen of LTO, you might spend $200-$2000 buying a tape drive. You probably won't buy a tape library for home use, but you won't necessarily need one given homelab volumes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oujii · 2023-12-04 03:26 > The general rule of thumb is $6/TB/month for cloud storage*, so if you are getting cheaper than that, you are getting a good deal. Nice hearing that, I got a 2TB HostHatch server years ago, I pay $40/year for 2TB storage. I remember on that promo, they have even bigger storage for very little (per TB), but I couldn't afford. I just use them as a seedbox, but I think they are insanely cheap ahd I could put better use to them. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-04 03:53 Last black Friday OVH was offering a server for AU$3/TB/month (2x 12TB disks, 64GB DDR4, E3v6). Was really, really tempting but I don't need to drop AU$69/month on another server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oujii · 2023-12-04 04:17 Yeah, on HostHatch I don't remember, but it was cheaper than $1/TB/month for those big servers, but they were all VPS and some of them required 2 year commitment for the biggest discount (still heavily discounted without it), so I couldn't justify such an expense to myself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tivin-i · 2023-12-04 05:13 I've been looking at tape drives for a while so I can fiddle with those, as I'm looking for 2nd hand one, unfortunately those available here on the second hand market are only LTO-2,4 and the most recent is 6 (which is probably ok, I'll just need more tapes). Maybe at some point I will pull the trigger and ship one from overseas. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- killermenpl · 2023-12-04 13:54 In terms of TB/€, a VPS with a lot of storage is the worst possible solution. For the price of a decent VPS + a measly 500GB block storage you can easily find a much better machine either in their server auction, or a dedicated server. In my experience, the Hetzner storage boxes are nice for backups and data you don't access that often. Their biggest downside (which is also one of the biggest upsides) is the fact that they're only available over network. This lets you connect to them from anywhere, but at the expense of latency, and limited bandwidth. TL;DR: for 30 euro you'll probably do much better if you just run a dedicated server ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cdemi · 2023-12-04 14:18 > jellyfin server > HETZNER Cloud arm servers Are you going to be transcoding or Direct Play? If transcoding I'm not sure what performance you can get, you'd have to benchmark it or find some benchmarks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DaFyre2010 · 2023-12-04 16:06 I'm not familiar with their ARM offerings, but I've had dedicated servers from Hetzner before and had excellent results with them. I'm also using KimSufi with good results. \~$42 (USD) /month gets me an Intel Xeon E5, 64 GB Ram, and 8TB raw storage. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Docccc · 2023-12-04 17:44 this. the intel dedicated servers have support for hardware encoding. arm servers wont. transcoding will probaply be painful but you should try it out if you plan on transcoding ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NavySeal2k · 2023-12-23 10:39 You could also look into their auctions. Servers that are returned from customers are deleted and rented "as is" (you cant change the hardware the previous owner configured) but otherwise you have full warranty if a drive dies for example. The monthly fee goes down a bit every couple hours and the first one that grabs it gets is for that monthly cost.
