Better File Searching/Uploading to Remote Desktop VM? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- InterestingMain5192 · 2023-12-03 23:36 I currently pay for a content management system access through a VM accessed by a remote desktop which is essential for the business (self-hosting isn’t an option for this piece of software for regulation purposes - needs to be frequently updated for changes in government regulations). I regularly have to upload PDFs generated locally to the content management system. These PDFs are generated by different devices and saved on a NAS locally before being uploaded to the cloud into the system. The problem we are encountering is that while we can browse the files over the local area network with relatively decent speeds, once we try and browse them over the remotely accessed VM to import them into the system, it takes roughly 1-3 minutes to search for the file and this has to be done hundreds of times in a day with relative urgency or else everything gets behind. Some solutions I was thinking of include upgrading the hard drives on the NAS to SSD. Currently, I am running Unraid for ease of use with an old but still well-functioning HDD. If I upgraded to some SSDs in a RAID configuration, maybe this could increase the speed downhill, but I am not convinced that is the primary problem. Another idea was somehow automating the merging of certain PDFs together so they could be uploaded and inserted into the management system at once, but that would add another step to the process. I could also zip the files then upload then unzip and insert, but that also would make the process messier. I was wondering if there is any self hosted way too make the files easier to browse/upload to the remote desktop or am I at the will of windows remote desktop protocol limitations? Unfortunately, I cannot install any different software to the remote desktop VM, but I can install it locally. I am not quite sure this was the right sub-reddit for this, but since there is some overlap I wanted to give it a shot. Any recommendations anyone can give would be greatly appreciated as I would prefer just to make the system inhouse faster/more reliable than have to deal with other outside services.
