Sanity check for Proxmox + Plex setup reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- im_not_dan · 2023-12-03 23:25 Hey all, Just purchased a little Lenovo M720q and an external 8TB HDD to start off. Here is my plan: * Install Proxmox on the PC storage * Create a VM and use docker-compose for Plex, *arrs, etc. * Create a VM for my download clients, and putting this entire VM behind a VPN * Create a VM/LXC, mount the external drive to it so I can set up a NFS/SMB or something (still researching this) so the other VMs/containers will all have access to it I am not sure with file systems to use for the Proxmox host and external storage. Been seeing people recommend EXT4, NTFS, ZFS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yoganerdYVR · 2023-12-04 07:05 Most of those can be installed on containers without touching the host. No need for allocation of resources to a VM. For file sharing, mount nfs to the host then bind mount to containers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bkx · 2023-12-05 02:45 Yeah. Just keep it simple with an Ubuntu Server install and Docker containers ---------------------------------------------------------------------- im_not_dan · 2023-12-05 03:04 That is most likely going to be my plan moving forward. Looks like a lot of people are recommending containers for everything, and we have ttek's scripts to streamline everything. https://tteck.github.io/Proxmox/ For file sharing with my external drive, it looks like I can just directly mount it to the Proxmox host and pass that through my containers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- im_not_dan · 2023-12-05 03:04 Thanks, will do! I will try to use LXC containers for now, if I run into issue, I can just fall back to Docker
