Best gigabyte/$ source of storage solutions? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theguywithacomputer · 2023-12-03 22:05 I read a year or two ago people were buying used hard drives in bulk and stress testing them in something like a 40% failure rate and keeping the 60%, so basically buying 10 hard drives to get six. Does someone have information on this? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-04 00:55 r/datahoarder is your best bet. The absolute *best* $/gigabyte is going to be tape. Yes, tape. But, while the medium is cheap, the drives are a whole different story. I don't know about that whole stress-test-to-failure thing. Seems odd to me because the 60 per cent of drives that did not fail *yet* might just fail as soon as you load in vital data, in part because of the unnecessary stress of the stress test. The second-cheapest option is to "shuck" external hard drives (buy WD Elements/EasyStore, destroy the plastic casing, chuck the drive into your box). You lose warranty, but you get much, much cheaper drives. If you buy large capacity (so 12TB+), you are liable to get binned enterprise/NAS drives instead of complete crap. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- theguywithacomputer · 2023-12-04 02:52 thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- cdbessig · 2023-12-04 03:49 Why is it that shucked drives are cheaper? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NikStalwart · 2023-12-04 03:52 Two things: firstly, you don't get the same warranty from the manufacturer (typically 2 years for external vs 5 years for enterprise internal) the drives that are sold as external tend to be "binned" (i.e. enterprise drives that failed some QA test or another but are nevertheless functional). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kmisterk · 2023-12-05 16:18 ## Post Removed Hey, theguywithacomputer!
