Hosting Wordpress on Linode reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smoknjoe44 · 2023-12-03 14:01 I am new to self hosting so please bear with me: I just found out my wife is paying Deluxe hosting (https://www.deluxehosting.com/) $100 a month for a website. There is nothing spectacular about the site and there are grammatical errors that someone should have caught. I feel like the cost of the site is a bit ridiculous and want to run a thought by you all before I try to implement it: My thought was to host a Wordpress site on one of Linodes shared CPU plans. I was looking at the $5 per month plus $2 backup plan. As long as my wife owns the domain name of her site, this should work, right? Is there something better you can think of? Are there additional costs to this set up that I am missing? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pnutster · 2023-12-03 14:22 The nanode may work... If slow, you can seamlessly upgrade to 2gb for $10 a month. Have had this for around 4 years... Problem free. Running Joomla sites. Having said that... I recently needed to upgrade to 4gb. That is where i started looking around for something cheaper. Ran into racknerd. Signed up for 2 years for 4gb ram-2cpu for total of just shy of $80. Significant savings compared to linode $480 for 2 years for the same. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pnutster · 2023-12-03 14:23 Also, no extra cost to your $5 a month except taxes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smartid · 2023-12-03 14:36 i really hope akamai doesn't ruin linode ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smoknjoe44 · 2023-12-03 14:43 Thank you. Are you saying the speed may not be enough dependent upon the amount of traffic? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pnutster · 2023-12-03 14:49 Not speed, RAM. The $5 nanode has 1gb RAM. Depending on the WP plugins in the site this could proof to a bit too low. Suggestion, try the 1gb nanode. If you are happy with performance, perfect. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TerryMathews · 2023-12-03 15:01 If you're just doing the WordPress stack, Shock Hosting has a $2.99/m plan. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- preclowski · 2023-12-03 15:02 It depends on visitors, plugins and optimization. Maybe 100$ is steal, maybe you are not utilizing 1% of resources. Or maybe you are running on 1% but in peaks it reaches 150% of resources. If you dont understand tech better dont touch this or contact with professionals. 5$ linode MAY be ok, may be not ---------------------------------------------------------------------- froid_san · 2023-12-03 15:26 I've use to host my and my wife's WordPress website for a couple of years on linode. My wife has little traffic, while mine has less to moderate traffic. no issue even with the 5$ vps (old price). you can get those 100$ free trial link on plenty of selfhosted YT channel and check it out yourself if it would work for you. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smoknjoe44 · 2023-12-03 15:29 Oh I see. Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smoknjoe44 · 2023-12-03 15:30 Thanks. Yes I am currently on Linode trial which made me think about it. I’ll probably just buy a cheap domain to play around with to see if I can get it working on that first. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smoknjoe44 · 2023-12-03 15:31 She is not blogging or making money. The site basically has information about the business. Nothing crazy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smoknjoe44 · 2023-12-03 15:32 Thank you. I will look into that as an option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- froid_san · 2023-12-03 15:51 Just make sure always have a plan B or C or a backup plan. WordPress is a very common cms that is easily hacked or downed by resource hog plugins. My site was always hacked before I've learned to self host on shared hosting (offshore dendi). So make sure you always have backups of the site or a alternative server to point your domain to have less downtime. Maybe it a good idea to learn to do WordPress backups and to quickly restore from them. I only know few bout WordPress but my wife is a wp dev so learned most of the wp stuff from her while I handle the selfhosted stuff. I think your main concern is about handling the emails. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- limskey · 2023-12-03 16:10 I pay $15 / month for a 4x CPU , 8 GB of Ram and 240 GB of SSD on IONOS aka 1&1. Comes with plesk too so that’s a nice bonus. I currently have 3 sites and will have to spin up more later on. You don’t have to buy the services like IONOS but shop around. Hell you could even get Oracle cloud server with ARM cpu for $2/month for 4x cpu and 24 g of ram. Plus a free 50 g S3 bucket. But I would say that the Oracle route, you should know there are multiple configurations you’ll have to make. And I recommend upgrading your account to a paid service one so they don’t delete your shit like others have said. GL ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PatochiDesu · 2023-12-03 16:43 would be even cheaper on ms azure xD and they are usually the most expensive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- feedpuff · 2023-12-03 17:27 Try Hetzner /cloud, check their VPS prices. Pay per hour. Fair enough. They have servers in EU and US. shared CPU or dedicated, arm/x86 (intel & amd) For EUR 4.51 you will get a cool 2vCPU, 4GB RAM, 40GB SSD, 20TB traffic https://www.hetzner.com/cloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bytepursuits · 2023-12-03 18:11 100$ a month might be totally fine, depending on what services she is getting for that. I dont event see 100/month plan on deluxehosting.com - going to assume this includes some maintenance /support plan? maybe some light theming? If shes making money from that site - I wouldnt touch it unless you want to deal with maintenance it will chew up a lot of time especially if you havent worked with wordpress before. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- parnelli99 · 2023-12-03 18:33 For sites that aren't running a ton of services I use hobohost, it's right around $15/year. It might be more capable than I give it credit for, but at a little more than $1 a month it's great for low traffic informational websites. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kumbaya_03802 · 2023-12-03 18:51 Why not host it at home on for ex. a $15 Rasp. Pi Zero W? It's not like she's hosting a huge e-commerce website like Amazon. If it's just a personal site with few mainly preloaded static pages then even a cheap wireless Rasp. is an overkill. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- binpax · 2023-12-03 20:50 Already ruined the name and the branding ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lormayna · 2023-12-03 21:01 > As long as my wife owns the domain name of her site, this should work, right? Yes! It works very fine, I have exactly the same setup for my wife. Linode support is great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smartid · 2023-12-03 21:05 just checked the website and logged in for the first time in months, yea they deleted the linode name ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ybizeul · 2023-12-03 21:08 What about oracle cloud free tier ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- useless_mlungu · 2023-12-03 23:20 I know this is not what you asked, but I'll share my 2c. I have a small business too, and I host my site on github pages. If the site can be made in a static fashion (assuming you don't really need to edit it, or require any plug-ins or databases and such), this is totally a great free option. Obviously not for everyone but just throwing it out there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- smoknjoe44 · 2023-12-03 23:54 The site rarely gets updated so I can just back it up anytime there is a change. How was your site getting hacked? What did you do to stop it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- froid_san · 2023-12-04 06:13 malware was always being injected on my files/folder and google will notify me that i'm hosting malware and I should remedy it. Did nothing special to stop it. I just stop paying for shared hosting and selfhosted it my self. Once I did that never get those malware issues and notification form google. I sometimes get attempt on bots trying yo log in on my admin panel but the firewall/waf/cloudflare can usually block them and their ip. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ianjs · 2023-12-04 07:22 You can host a static site on Github for free. It sounds like WordPress is way overkill for a few pages that just describe the business. There are tools around that will crawl a site and convert it to static files you can just upload. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- puckpuckgo · 2023-12-04 09:17 I use this plan. They're pretty good for what they charge. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- geo38 · 2023-12-04 17:51 So far, so good for me.
