I already have Nextcloud. Does it work well as photo storage these
days or does it still have e problems? Is there anything better that
also has mobile app for iOS with automatic upload?

I made a post a while back with a Google sheet of all known self-host
photo servers. I gave each one a good week trial and I ended up
sticking with PhotoPrism. The facial recognition and tagging is
excellent and I'm in love with the UI.

+100 for Immich…!

Just be warned that it’s a rapid update cycle… and you’ll need to keep
on top of that.

With memories app you will have a good option for your nextcloud. I
had this for a while…

But as some others mentioned, Immich is the way to go
