I made an app for self-hosting your online course. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 00:25 sorry for the terrible GIF quality. Demo: [https://e-course.pages.dev/](https://e-course.pages.dev/) Github repo: [https://github.com/Ilyas- Codes/eCourse](https://github.com/Ilyas-Codes/eCourse) Use the following credentials for testing the demo: Username: admin Password: ecourseadmin eCourse is a free and open-source template for creating & hosting your online course, It comes with a sleek UI and is pretty lightweight (last I checked I got a 100 performance score on lighthouse) it's also easily customizable through a single \`config.json\` file for the landing page content, and the PocketBase admin UI for managing the course's content. I would love to get some feedback on this one, thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zeal514 · 2023-12-03 00:53 nice. Starred for later. Looks great. My wife is starting a tutoring/class that is both online and in person, teaching people english. Its aimed at those who are just learning english, whether as a second language, or as a first language as a kid. This might end up being really useful for her. I'll run it by her and see if she wants to try it out or not. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DesignerBranch69 · 2023-12-03 02:16 This is great! Any plans to add some kind of SSO like LDAP, OIDC/Oauth or ....? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Brancliff · 2023-12-03 02:53 Can we get a docker version? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nemongaku · 2023-12-03 03:07 This is a really cool app! Thank you!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jorissels · 2023-12-03 03:15 I love the idea of this as a was searching for something like udemy. Have you thought about creating a stripe system or something like that to give users access to your courses? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-12-03 04:00 Svelte and Pocketbase, my favourite stack. Nice! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- omeromano · 2023-12-03 04:03 Yeah! This is awesome. Will be more awesome in docker! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- migsperez · 2023-12-03 04:59 That's awesome! How do I connect it to Stripe or other payment providers to charge for the course? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JoshfromNazareth · 2023-12-03 05:04 It’s nice to see someone building out a learning management system since Canvas sort of dominates the open source world in that area. That aside, is there any learner management, grading, etc. or is it more for building out self-service learning paths? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nintenuendo_ · 2023-12-03 05:27 Ohhh no this is cool. What an awesome project! Looks amazing ---------------------------------------------------------------------- purgedreality · 2023-12-03 05:40 Very interesting. I'm using the new Blackboard Govt, but we previously used Moodle and I loved being able to modify it. I bookmarked your project and am rooting for you. Also, it looks like your Downloads section is returning zero byte files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brqdev · 2023-12-03 05:51 Cool project 👍, one question... How long did it take you to build the project? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- this_is_me_123435666 · 2023-12-03 07:24 Looking forward to a usable docker image ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Cylian91460 · 2023-12-03 08:19 Can't you do it yourself ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 09:44 Thank you, yes I'm going to be adding Oauth soon, I'm not familiar with the other stuff tho sorry. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 09:48 That sounds awesome, I might actually be the first to join since I need to better my English skills, especially verbal lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 09:49 Sure thing, I'm not very familiar with docker, but I'll add it to the list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 09:52 so the thing is, I'm from Morocco, and Stripe isn't available here, I tried contacting Stripe to give me access to some sort of developer sandbox for testing but I didn't get a response back. so now I'm thinking of using LemonSqueezy instead but I'm not sure if people will like it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zerospatial · 2023-12-03 09:57 Outside of how cool this project is, great idea to add the "Need a frontend developer?" to your readme. Might have to do that for all my projects as well! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 09:57 I'm not familiar with "Canvas' sorry, also I don't really consider my app to be a full-fledged LMS, for now, it's very minimal and doesn't have many features, but I'm taking notes from the comments here, and I'll be adding more features soon, also the idea of grading seems really cool, so I'll add that to the list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 09:58 Thank you!! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 09:58 Happy to hear that, you're welcome! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 09:59 yup, the dev experience can't get any better. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 10:00 Thank you, as I said in another comment, unfortunately, Stripe isn't available in my country, so I'm planning on integrating LemonSqueezy instead. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 10:03 Thank you, I'm happy that you liked it, yes those are just empty files I created with "touch [source-code.zip](https://source-code.zip)" as placeholder data for the demo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 10:04 Thank you, It took me a little under a month for everything, planning, design, and development. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 10:08 Yes, I'll be adding one soon, I'm not very comfortable with docker yet so give me some time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 10:14 Honestly, I didn't think anyone would notice that, I tried to be subtle about offering my services to avoid coming across as too salesy, but I'm glad you noticed it lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oli_Picard · 2023-12-03 11:39 If it’s not something you know now it might be a good idea to learn about those other authentication measures so that this can be adopted by enterprise. :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tillybowman · 2023-12-03 11:40 nice idea ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chinoman10 · 2023-12-03 11:42 What about Patreon? Or even Discord (Discord communities can now be monetized as well, and they take a much smaller cut than Patreon). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chinoman10 · 2023-12-03 11:44 The fact that this is Cloudflare-hostable first and Docker second is great IMHO. Yes, Cloudflare-hosted isn't self-hosted, but it's unlimited free hosting by one of, if not, the largest CDN on the planet. I take that anytime I can choose over hosting something myself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DarkKnyt · 2023-12-03 12:16 Not self hosted but this is a free, is government provided option with supposedly a lot of learning science behind it. https://www.gifttutoring.org/projects/gift/wiki/Overview ---------------------------------------------------------------------- migsperez · 2023-12-03 12:39 Brilliant. Never heard of LemonSqueezy but took a look and it seems like a great option too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brqdev · 2023-12-03 12:53 Wow great job, I have a project that has similarities with Pocketbase but uses Postgresql, Redis, and RabbitMQ built with microservices architecture. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Erikt311 · 2023-12-03 13:33 I would suggest familiarizing yourself with Canvas, Moodle, even Blackboard on the non-OS side. While all are much more full-fledged LMS than what you are going for, they would at least give you an idea what feature sets are pretty common across all of them as a baseline. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 14:25 Oh yes, I'm a little familiar with SSO, but have no idea what LDAP & OIDC are. I'm definitely going to learn about those. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 14:28 hmm, I don't know yet, I want to provide as much of a custom checkout experience as possible, and with Stripe out of the way, LemonSqueezy seems to be my only option. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 14:29 I tried looking up "Canvas" but couldn't find anything related to an LMS, can you leave me a link to the project? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 14:31 oh man, that sounds a little too bleeding edge for me lol, good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jorissels · 2023-12-03 14:45 A good one is “mollie” ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 14:48 welp, not available in my country lol [https://help.mollie.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002116105-Can-I-use- Mollie-s-services-in-my-country-](https://help.mollie.com/hc/en- us/articles/115002116105-Can-I-use-Mollie-s-services-in-my-country-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Erikt311 · 2023-12-03 15:16 https://www.instructure.com/canvas ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jorissels · 2023-12-03 15:16 God damnit hahahahaha ---------------------------------------------------------------------- brqdev · 2023-12-03 15:30 Good luck 👍 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- marbonmb · 2023-12-03 16:17 I'd love to work with you on this ! It's not that hard :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 16:42 Thank you, I'm soon going to add a project board to the GitHub repo to track the features/bugs I'm going to be working on. If you're interested, please leave a PR in the repo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pqfan123 · 2023-12-03 18:51 This looks really cool, I have a few questions/feature requests if you want. First, would there be a way to have multiple courses in which each could have different modules? The second would be a chat feature, which has the ability to make a text/voice chat in each course/module but only if enabled. Lastly, is there or will there be member management tools such as the ability to limit signups to where if someone signs up, the admin has to approve them before they can have access? This is such a cool app with a lot of potential! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-03 19:38 I'm not really sure tbh, in my mind the app is supposed to be used for a single course with multiple modules & lessons, not multiple courses, I can't really think of how I'm going to extend pocketbase and stuff to accommodate for this feature. but I'll see what I can do (I have a pile of new features I'm going to be adding to the app, and I'm going to put them all on a project board on the repo soon) I can add a chat feature, Pocketbase has a neat way of subscribing to real-time events, but I'm not sure what the chat will be used for. communicating with the author or other members? it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. maybe help figure this one out? I like the last one, limiting the number of users who can access the course, so like if someone is late to the party, they get redirected to a different page or maybe they receive an email of the next course launch or something, yeah I like this one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ryan8344 · 2023-12-04 01:21 It's great! I would add a quiz module though to make it complete. Silly me, I thought it was a real class as well as being a demo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IlyasCodes · 2023-12-04 07:06 Yes, I already added that one to the list. I will be adding many features soon! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rrrmmmrrrmmm · 2023-12-04 10:12 It looks nice! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thankyoufatmember · 2023-12-09 05:15 I came to say this too, your project looks amazing.
