Why so many used CPU memories are in China? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Plan2309 · 2023-12-02 22:36 When I search used CPUs/graphic cards on eBay. Most sellers are located in China. Many supercomputing centers in the US disused lots of old CPUs. Are they all imported to China? Where can I buy the used ones from American institutions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- user3872465 · 2023-12-02 22:51 First I had a stroke reading this. Holly. But set the location closer or filter for US only. No they have their own Datacenters in China that they upgrade or refurbish. Secondhand market there is just bigger. US often just toss and destroy it and dont bother with reselling. Stuff is legit and cheap from China, so buy it. Bought several CPUs RAM and GPUs even. All in perfect condition and cleaned. Arrived pretty quick aswell. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LongIslandTeas · 2023-12-02 22:52 Could the reason be that China stuff is fake? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-02 22:59 And this is about selfhosting software how exactly...?? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Plan2309 · 2023-12-02 23:02 Yes, it will be cheaper if we can buy used CPUs from the local computing center. It's so sad that they toss used equipment rather than reselling. Actually, Tianhe 2 in China is still using E5 2696v2. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HisAnger · 2023-12-02 23:08 Often scams, but not always. New stuff is 90% scam old is mostly fine ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PatochiDesu · 2023-12-02 23:25 bigger companys have contracts with their supplyers that manages replacement of old hardware and often covers the takeback of the old hardware. this hardware is usually refurbished and sold again by third companys or recycled. Also work for a bigger IT company and tryed to buy used hardware. it was impossible because of these contracts. i think the only way is to grab something refurbished. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 100GHz · 2023-12-02 23:38 How do you fake a Xeon cpu? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Plan2309 · 2023-12-03 01:26 Really!? It's impossible ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Plan2309 · 2023-12-03 01:28 Oh, I built the self hosting server using some used CPUs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ok-Plan2309 · 2023-12-03 01:29 Thank you for sharing ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HisAnger · 2023-12-03 08:07 China unofficial policy is that if you scam regular people outside of China on this scale, no authority will chase you. Friend bought a 20 core xeon for his home server, arrived , worked fine. Then he bought mini pc from the same seller to build something simpler for his parents ... never got it and seller was gone within a week. So it is a lottery. Buying cheap old stuff should be fine, but never something more expensive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-03 09:25 Youre missing the point of this subreddit.
