Which OS for a self-hosted home lab / smart home server? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmythro · 2023-12-02 20:16 Getting a nice mini PC with efficient Intel N100 CPU. Wondering which OS should I use. Here are things I found that seem most popular. Any additions are welcome! My main requirements: - open source Linux - web interface or app to easily control remotely - support docker containers - host some DB like Postgres - support things like NextCloud, Plex, Home Assistant etc (or similar) [View Poll](https://www.reddit.com/poll/189c43o) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Niceygy · 2023-12-02 20:19 Maybe try portainer? It just kinda.... Works (And no doubt you could find a nice dash lol ) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmythro · 2023-12-02 20:27 Forgot to add a “nice dash” to requirements list! It actually is important as well :) Portainer is available as one of the apps, at least for Umbrel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- throwawayacc201711 · 2023-12-02 20:29 None of those are actual OS’s. They’re just gui apps and I think it’s a great disservice that they try and make people think they’re OS’s. At the end of the day, all of those are dashboards (they run in a browser) and give a visualization of your home server and give you the ability to add new services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JustDalek_ · 2023-12-02 20:35 https://cosmos-cloud.io/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AK1174 · 2023-12-02 20:38 ubuntu server is pretty cool ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jerwong · 2023-12-02 20:40 I just bought the exact same thing and tried to install ESXi on it. Gave up fighting with it and just installed ProxMox instead. It almost hits all of your requirements. Right now I'm using a LXC container to host docker containers. Specifically, I want Jellyfin to take advantage of Intel's QuickSync for transcoding H265 HEVC videos. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmythro · 2023-12-02 20:40 I agree, but it is what it is, not my naming :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pigers1986 · 2023-12-02 20:40 None of OS located, please fix list. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmythro · 2023-12-02 20:50 Thanks! Gonna check it out. I remember I have a lifetime Plex, but didn’t use it for a while. But heard a lot of good things about Jellyfish as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nzbs_in · 2023-12-02 21:06 Have you tried openmediavault? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmythro · 2023-12-02 21:07 Thanks! Can’t change poll here anymore, but added to my personal list :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kingbird43 · 2023-12-02 21:15 Diet Pi, especially if you are a little hardware constrained like Rpi etc. Even on a full-fledged server it runs flawlessly and has a lot of functions. There can be some issues if you are a hardcore user. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oujii · 2023-12-02 21:17 Yunohost is good. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JoeB- · 2023-12-02 21:29 This is the first I have heard of these; however, I would not be interested anyway because my home sever environment (and home lab) is much too complex for any of them. That said, after a quick look at each, I think CasaOS is the best looking and most complete solution for a single home server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- R0NAM1 · 2023-12-02 21:38 Proxmox for a hypervisor, and Debian by default for all servers. (Proxmox is based on Debian, so technically all Debian!) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmythro · 2023-12-02 21:51 It’s great! But I’m probably too lazy to setup and maintain all apps/configs manually now :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mintfresh22 · 2023-12-02 22:13 None of those. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xboxlivedog · 2023-12-02 22:47 I recently switched from Ubuntu to Debian. Since I’m running on older hardware I’ve really reaped the benefits of the lighter footprint of Debian ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-02 23:02 None of those are Operating Systems... smh If you want to use something like those listed, look at /r/CosmosServer ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-02 23:02 No, its not what it is. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -my_dude · 2023-12-02 23:14 Debian. You can install Cockpit, or any of those "OSes" if you want a web ui on top ---------------------------------------------------------------------- joehaenes · 2023-12-02 23:14 Proxmox ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmythro · 2023-12-02 23:14 I didn’t name them, did I? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-02 23:28 Just because something has OS in its name doesnt make it a Operating System. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dmythro · 2023-12-02 23:32 And I agreed with that! But still got downvoted for some reason. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-02 23:49 I wonder why...
