rough estimate cost for hosting a email server in a vps reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msho19 · 2023-12-02 13:51 Hi there. I wanna purchase a vps for hosting my own email server. The email server im talking about is [this](https://appsumo.com/produc ts/emaildelivery/?clickId=2BjXLi3VrxyPUAWzXpQTiWgSUkFX4PV5A0EMwY0&irgw c=1&utm_medium=4245229&utm_campaign=Online%20Tracking%20Link&utm_sourc e=IR). I plan on sending roughly 700-1000 emails a day, not sure how many I'll get back. they recommend a $18 dedicated VPS with 2 CPUs/4GB ram/NVMe disk. $200 in digital ocean credit based off your experience using vps's, how much do you think hosting a email server on a vps would cost ? and do you think $200 digital ocean credit is enough to host a email server for a year ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nikade87 · 2023-12-02 14:00 A "droplet" with 4Gb ram, 2 vCPU, 80Gb SSD is $24 per month so it'll cost you $288 for a year at DigitalOcean. Im running "mailinabox" on a VM for about 25 users and it has 4Gb ram, 2vCPU and 40Gb SSD and its running just fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- valdecircarvalho · 2023-12-02 14:09 Use a proper SaaS service for this. If those emails are important and MUST reach the destination, you are doing it totally wrong. Mailchip and so many other services are 1000000x better than your cheap VPS for this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Trustworthy_Fartzzz · 2023-12-02 14:22 Are you hosting at home or a hosting company. Been considering spinning up an instance at home. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-12-02 14:24 10 million dollars a month. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AdmiralPoopyDiaper · 2023-12-02 14:47 A “droplet” is a DigitialOcean VPS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- pcs3rd · 2023-12-02 14:51 You can do Google business workspace starter for $7/user/month, then you also get drive space and some other stuff. Porkbun has a macro to add all of the required configs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msho19 · 2023-12-02 14:57 its for sending bulk cold emails. mailchip is not designed for that. saas services are to expensive plus they limit the amount of leads and emails you can send. there's no such thing as 'unlimited' with these services. I have my own email campaigns (\~30,000 emails a month) and I'll be running email campaigns for clients (\~5000 - 10,000 emails a month for each client). why spend hundreds or thousands a month sending emails when I can make one payment of $67 (minus hosting, domains & ip charges) the services is solid, has a lot of features to improve deliverability & informs you of the status of sent emails (failed to deliver or landed in spam) the emails won't bounce if you know what your doing. im just clueless when it comes to hosting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- faverin · 2023-12-02 14:58 Your emails won't arrive or will go into spam. By all means host and read your mail on whatever you like but your mail sending should be via: Mailchimp MXroute Mailjet Research the sending and how spam is handled these days as otherwise you will successfully send a lot of mail directly to spam... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msho19 · 2023-12-02 15:02 I know all this. I have one 100 domain to send from, each sending 15-20 emails a day ---------------------------------------------------------------------- valdecircarvalho · 2023-12-02 15:09 But you will be endup in a spam list. That’s my opinion and my experience with past jobs. Tell me your experience with sending 30000 emails a month with a self hosted solution. I really wanna learn more about it. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nikade87 · 2023-12-02 15:37 Im renting space in a datacenter, I dont think it is a good idea to host it at home if you're depending on it. Also you really want a static IP with reverse DNS when hosting a mail- server.
