Finally moving to Navidrome... but how to best manage files and metadata? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whatever875444 · 2023-12-02 07:28 After months of research, I'm finally ready to move my music library from Spotify to Navidrome. But I'm facing one big problem: I need to be able to edit file metadata easily and quickly. I understand that it's not possible to do that directly on Navidrome, so I would love to hear y'all's thoughts: 1. Are there Navidrome clients that allow for writing on files? I'm guessing not, because the read-only limitation seems to be at the Navidrome server level. 2. If no on 1, are there metadata editors like MusicBrainz Picard that can work on remote libraries? My Navidrome server is hosted remotely. 3. If no on 2, I'm thinking the best way may be to edit file metadata directly on my computer using something like MusicBrainz Picard, but then how can I sync files between my Navidrome server and my local folder? I'm happy to do this manually once in a while, but obviously it would still require a system to sync that does *not* involve deleting and reuploading my entire library. 4. If no on 3, are there other solutions y'all can think of? I'm not very comfortable with command line work and I'm hoping to work with a proper GUI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fletchowns · 2023-12-02 08:24 I'd say it depends on where you store your data, and what's hosting your Navidrome server. My music is stored on my NAS. I've got a Samba share to my Windows desktop, which allows me to use Picard to edit the metadata. I also have an NFS mount to the same volume on my app server, so that gonic (subsonic server) can access the same files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- austozi · 2023-12-02 08:38 I use option 3 myself and I just don't sync. All my music is hosted on the server with no local copies on the client computer. I don't add music often so I don't mind it. If you want to manage the remote library directly, there's https://github.com/linuxserver/docker-beets which is a command line tool. Or, install https://github.com/linuxserver/webtop and then use a GUI library manager in that container, if you really need a GUI. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- finnolin · 2023-12-02 11:20 I just ssh onto my server and use [beets](https://beets.io/) to remotely organize my navidrome collection and edit metadata. Beets has lots of auto-tagging features and I rarely need to edit anything manually. Works great if you are ok with using the command line. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-12-02 16:18 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ursa_Solaris · 2023-12-02 16:22 Navidrome does not support editing data on the server, no. If you need to edit the data directly without using a command line tool, you should configure the directory it's stored in to be a network share with Samba or NFS so you can directly access the data remotely from your desktop and edit it that way. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- avdept · 2023-12-02 18:46 Why not go with jellyfin? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whatever875444 · 2023-12-02 20:54 Because I don't have the skills to install and maintain manually, and PikaPods offers one-click install for Navidrome. Do you know one-click installs for Jellyfin? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whatever875444 · 2023-12-02 21:06 The thing is that Navidrome is installed as a one-click install on PikaPods, because I don't have the skill to install and maintain it myself, so I wouldn't be able to install any additional components like Docker Webtop. And I really don't love working with the command line tool... so perhaps Navidrome isn't for me afterall? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Darkchamber292 · 2023-12-03 16:23 Lidarr
