Internal scheduled email “journeys”

I have a request to build (I am actually a software engineer) a web
app that allows some users to build emails and schedule them to send
on a schedule to internal users.

Example:
New employee starts so they receive a specific email on day 1, a
different one on day 5, then one at day 30.

My first thought… well after thinking building this myself would be
silly… was some sort of marketing email tool and build a campaign of
scheduled emails that can be launched for each new hire (or one of the
other many ‘journeys’).

I have not found a clean solution for this.

In the SaaS email marketing tool we have there are two main problems:
1. Emails are sent exclusively from external senders and this creates
confusion (like items being sent to junk).
2. Email campaigns seem to be just a single email that can be schedule
for a list of people.

I feel like a community of people like my self hosted peeps could help
me get going in the right direction…. Thank you all.

The only way I've got this to work is to have a calendar email
reminder or to use O365 schedule send.

The calendar reminder wouldn't be great for your scenario though and
O365 isn't selfhosted...
