Recommendations for new homelab server reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DannyvdM42 · 2023-12-01 17:52 Hi All, I have a homelab server on my loft, which I want to replace. This will be a bit of a downgrade, because it's getting old and it's overpowered. I do have big shortage of memory. Old: SuperMicro server i7-970 (6 x 3,2ghz) and 24GB memory New: Synology DS723+ Ryzen R1600 (2 x 3,1ghz) and 32GB memory This will save me a lot of costs for power and I want to decrease the risk of the server failing. So far, so good. More memory, less cores, more features. However, I do want some more power at home. But for a bit of a different reason. I always had a PC right under my desk. This has been replaced by a laptop on top of my desk. Which results in me having cold feet in the winter. My desk is in the middle of the room, which is the coldest place. I want to place a secondary homelab server under my desk, which should give me warm feet. I'm looking for a small form factor PC/Server, because I don't have a lot of space left under my desk. I want something with +/- 32-128GB of memory and about 8 cores preferably. I will use this for as a Kubernetes node for some development testing and load testing. Now on to the real questions. How would you manage this? Shall I just buy a case with a lot of airflow? Would you recommend AMD/Intel or do you even have a specific CPU or chipset you would recommend? Do you have more recommendations? More memory is always better. If I need to choose between more memory or a faster CPU, I will choose for more memory. Yes, I know a heater would be more efficient. But this is more fun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thekrautboy · 2023-12-01 19:08 Ask a hardware sub, like /r/HomeServer or /r/Homelab etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- subven1 · 2023-12-02 03:15 Wrong subreddit.
