Maybe I'm in trouble? 馃槄 reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Random_Fellow_Human 路 2023-12-01 14:16 Hey guys, so yeah, I'm lost about what exactly happened. I kinda lost myself with selfhosting pijarr ( package with radar, sonarr, etc. ) and qBittorrent. This and at the same time I had a Wireguard VPN server offsite in hopes to keep me out of trouble. I didn't really download much to be honest, specially from torrents. But at some point I was downloading an abandoned old game from Internet Archive and the internet became insanely slow, 1mbs, behaving in weird way. The next day, the insite internet where I am became stable (700mbs). But the Offsite internet is still very low even though it is fiber. It is currently at 90mbs (wired). At the same time, the wireguard server just won't work. DNS is correct, ports are open, but the internet is just slow and wireguard won't work. I'm suspecting my ISP is doing something fishy like DPI or at least throttling. Does this sound like the case? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Senkyou 路 2023-12-01 14:46 What should it be? Have you tested speeds to more than one point? It sounds like you're using your download as a reference and there's a decent chance that it's not saturating your pipe. I average around 100mbps on some of my downloads even though my house gets 500mbps. The destination just isn't providing more at that time, for whatever reason ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Random_Fellow_Human 路 2023-12-01 14:51 Just tested another computer on that offsite location, it gave 210mbs result. It's still very far from 900mbs or 1000mbs, which should be close to that on fiber considering there's not much happening on that network. I know I'll probably have to call the ISP and complain that the internet is the way it is supposed to be. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Senkyou 路 2023-12-01 14:58 Are you at least testing hardwired? There's a whole lot of steps to go through before jumping to the ISP if you want to be sure that they can help you ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Random_Fellow_Human 路 2023-12-01 15:03 All the devices I'm testing are cable connected to the router. What I'm thinking to do is to ask someone to turn off and on the router physically, instead of just restarting it remotely via Gui. In case ISP is really messing with my bandwidth because of torrenting or bandwidth abuse, is there a normal duration? Does it stop / reset when the public IP changes? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fargenable 路 2023-12-01 15:09 Didn鈥檛 you write offsite link is 90Mbps. Isn鈥檛 that the limiting factor in this test? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Random_Fellow_Human 路 2023-12-01 15:21 Let's just forget offsite and insite. I'm doing the test directly in a device inside that network, and 90mbs is the result during the speedtest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fargenable 路 2023-12-01 15:31 A better test might be to run iPerf2/3 between both hosts. First without any VPN and then with VPN, that will give you the performance of the VPN. Also might want to provide more information, OS and version, CPU, NIC(s), , virtualized or baremetal, MTU, version of Wireguard. There are many things about these environments that we don't know that could affect performance. Good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fargenable 路 2023-12-01 15:49 If both hosts can support 85-90% of line rate with VPN there can still be subtle difference that affect performance to the internet. Some of them can be MTU size, most local networks support jumbo frames of 9000 bytes which allows for saturating a network interface more easily, latency, and then of course there are things that cannot be observed like internet congestion. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Senkyou 路 2023-12-01 15:52 If they're doing it in response to torrenting I'm almost 100% certain they'd serve you a warning. I think they're legally obligated (if not required). The same goes for throttling, as it covers their asses in a liability sense. They are obligated to provide a certain level of service and throttling you without notice is on the line as far as violating that goes. Give it a physical reboot, that'd be great. Also try testing to other services like fast.com or speedtest.net. You can also set up your own speed test server on your network with OpenSpeedTest or LibreSpeed if you want. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Random_Fellow_Human 路 2023-12-01 17:49 Thank you so much for the useful insight. I've been thinking about hosting some network monitoring tools for a while. Like zabbix, wireguard, netdata, now I heard about wazuh. I have a lot of stuff selfhosted, for work too, but I need to invest more in cyber security and monitoring, as of now I'm completely blind. The only monitoring I have right now is an Android app called PingTools, where I ping the most important servers and websites to check if they're up and running. Having a solid server dedicated to this would been useful right now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Random_Fellow_Human 路 2023-12-01 17:57 The device that is the server of wireguard is just a Raspberry running Ubuntu 22.10 Kde, it was working pretty well, until I started venturing into torrenting and using him as the front man VPN :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fargenable 路 2023-12-01 18:14 Okay, you are still not providing a lot of info, there are 6 or 7 versions of RPis if you include the zero鈥檚 and you haven鈥檛 taken any effort to run the iperf tests I recommended. I have a similar setup with an RPI4 which I use when traveling internationally for watching tv and it easily hits 500Mbps if my Airbnb has a fast internet connection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Random_Fellow_Human 路 2023-12-01 18:26 It's a RPi4, 4GB ram. I'm gonna try iperf, I never used it before ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fargenable 路 2023-12-01 19:52 Please do the necessary and then report back!
