Owncloud alternatives (December 2023) reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Knukun · 2023-12-01 12:46 Hello! I'm looking to migrate from owncloud as they're stuck with php 7.4 and docker. Nextcloud is the obvious followup choice but I'm not convinced from what I've read it seems like it's prone to breakingin between upgrade that's a headache I really don't want. Can anyone who uses nextcloud pitch in, eventually? Any suggestions? Date in the thread added just for future googlers coming here. It must be: - opensource (I don't mind paying as long as I can self-host it) - must be able to run self-hosted - must have a sync client - must support S3 buckets - must be able to have users/passowrds of course, but in addition to that it must be able to create public shares protected by password/expiration dates - Ideally, but not a hard stopper, it should be able to import (credentials, users, files) from an owncloud installation Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raithmir · 2023-12-01 13:00 If I've left my NextCloud instance a long time between updating (like a couple of major versions out), I click the upgrade button expecting to have to manually run the command via the console, and disable maintenance mode afterwards. Can't say it's broken completely but there's sometimes been a need to coax it through manually. As long as it's updated reasonable frequently it's all just worked fine through the web gui in my experience. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mirakulixx · 2023-12-01 13:01 HAve you had a look into owncloud ocis? [https://owncloud.dev/ocis/migration/](https://owncloud.dev/ocis/migra tion/) they replaced the backend php stack with go Since this is a rather new project, they might not have all the usecases you need. Anyway might be worth al ook ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Knukun · 2023-12-01 13:03 I don't mind running manual commands as long as it actually works and I don't have to waste a day recovering the database. It's quite big and I have enough users that the moment it's down I get a call. Thanks for sharing your experience! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Knukun · 2023-12-01 13:05 Thanks, I wasn't aware of ocis, I'm a bit wary of newer projects though, but thanks for the heads up. Have you ever used it if I may ask? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mirakulixx · 2023-12-01 13:10 I am using it, and all the file syncing works without issues also updating is issues less, just downloading the latest docker image and restarting, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mirakulixx · 2023-12-01 13:10 I am using it, and all the file syncing works without issues also updating is issues less, just downloading the latest docker image and restarting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Knukun · 2023-12-01 13:11 thanks for sharing your experience! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- diblasio1 · 2023-12-01 13:17 I've been running Nextcloud since the fork and I've only had to do manual commands once years ago. Currently I follow the terrible practice of deploying :latest docker version and I have watchtower check for updates daily. No hiccups for a few years now. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jasonweiser · 2023-12-01 13:41 I never had an issue updating Nextcloud when I used it, but I did have issues syncing large-ish (like 500-800MB files) across computers and users. They would hang and we would need to restart clients on various computers to finally get things moving. I switched to [Seafile](https://www.seafile.com/en/home/), but I've heard good things about [Syncthing](https://syncthing.net/). It [appears Seafile is compatible with S3](https://vitobotta.com/2023/02/09/self-hosted-seafile-s3-collabora- online/). I feel like probably nothing else, save Nextcloud, could import ownCloud credentials. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Knukun · 2023-12-01 13:44 Thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah, my users have very large datasets (often 20-40GB) they need to sync, if it hangs it's a migraine waiting to happen. Thanks for the tips, I'll look into both! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- puredecaf · 2023-12-01 14:03 Syncthing is peer to peer file sharing, not server client file sharing. Also, in my experience, resilio sync is more stable than syncthing, if you sync a lot of files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tebeks · 2023-12-01 14:12 I have been running Nextcloud in a docker container (core+MySQL, not the AIO) with updates via watchtower or years without anyajor issue. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Knukun · 2023-12-01 14:32 Thanks for sharing your experience. May I ask how many TBs are shared and how many users do you have, give or take? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tebeks · 2023-12-01 14:38 Well, just two users. Two digit gigabyte, around 30-50G. Lots of small files, I use it has remote access/backup of my "visible" $HOME (no dot files). Same for the other use (my wife). Access from multiple locations and OSs (Linux and MacOS), one the locations does daily scan of them since I use that copy as source for off-site backup with restock. I use the official sync client, WebDAV access is really slow. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Knukun · 2023-12-01 14:39 Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- valentine_shin · 2023-12-01 15:14 Does it have some sort of load balancing? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zarrian · 2023-12-01 15:45 I’ve been running Seafile since 2016. It is rock-solid. I migrated when OwnCloud (at the time) couldn’t sync a 4 GIg folder and decided I didn’t need it since it didn’t sync. Thankfully I backup everything buy it made me lose confidence in using OwnCloud and anything based on it ever again. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xxtkx · 2023-12-01 16:19 Nextcloud is solid for me. Performance is fine with mysql+redis. Nextcloud updates are not manually performed anymore, they are pushed through the docker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- violet-crayola · 2023-12-01 16:59 I want to try cloudreve ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Omemanti · 2023-12-01 17:17 Yup, have the same. Took me some time to get my docker compose complete. But after that it was up and running, never looked back. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ctrl-brk · 2023-12-01 17:42 I went Seafile as well and it just works. Always. Crazy fast. Really love the upload share link for my customers to send me big files. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ArCePi · 2023-12-01 17:57 Same, I migrated when I discovered that owncloud suffered when syncing small files. Seafile has been perfect since. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tharunx · 2023-12-01 18:04 I had the same thought as you some time ago. I dont want a software that breaks frequently. I have tried owncloud, owncloud ocis, seafile and several others. Finally settled on Nextcloud. Why? It did not break for me. I frequently update anyways. But its the only app out of all those i have tried which has all the features i expect, great mobile apps, great sync, great community and bunch of apps on their appstore and more incoming. Also its open-source and stores your files as it is (unlike seafile which converts them to unknown blobs and cannot be restored without seafile itself). Try nextcloud. If you feel it bloated at first time that’s alright, those are just apps. Almost everything you see in nextcloud is an app. You can uninstall any of them. You have full control ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Tharunx · 2023-12-01 18:08 Hey, I’ve recently tried this. It’s a hiccup to setup workouts good documentation on ocis. It took me several painful hours. But after setup it had upload issues with mobile apps. I heard ocis has some of these issues with owncloud mobile app since its work in progress. Unfortunately uploading files to it is primary feature without which i cannot use it. So I uninstalled it and moved to nextcloud. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nikkytor · 2023-12-01 18:17 I find nextcloud and owncloud etc. overly complicated and bloated. I don't get why they make simple file sharing so complicated. I have come across Alist on github [https://github.com/alist- org/alist](https://github.com/alist-org/alist) \- This looks great. but I don't think it can be compared with nextcloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gabe_Isko · 2023-12-01 18:51 I've never had any problems with nextcloud. Love it for a dropbox style service replacement. Having said that, it is SQL/databse backed. Not really something I think of as a bucket service. All your requirments have to do with synching to S3. Why do you want to synch a service like this to buckets? If you want self hosted buckets that synch to S3 buckets through a synchronization policy, than you are looking for minio. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- msic · 2023-12-01 19:15 The simple solution is to not update for every minor point release. Instead, update as each major release reaches stability after several point releases. There is no rush. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Swimming-Bank6567 · 2023-12-01 19:26 My Nextcloud has been rock steady for years. There was one hiccup years ago, but it self corrected 🤷‍♂️ For clarity, I deployed a Ubuntu VM, back when I knew nothing of Linux/Ubuntu, and the tutorial used Snap for Nextcloud... If I was to do it all again, I'd be looking at docker; but as it's been stable, I've just left it 🤷‍♂️ The only thing that annoys me is it's a CPU hog when transferring large quantity of files, or attempting to view photos. Though that's more about my homelab setup and how inefficient VMs can sometimes be for burstable events. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- nerdyviking88 · 2023-12-01 19:32 We run containerized Nextcloud. No issues ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Significant_Chef_945 · 2023-12-01 22:21 I have been using NextCloud for a long time. A few years back, I switched to the docker container model (keeping the config & data files outside the container via mapped volume). Works great! I really rely on it for some important business docs. Plus, running Nextcloud in a docker container makes upgrades very easy. Just shutdown the container then restart it (pulling the latest image). Probably 15secs of downtime. No issues yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- igmyeongui · 2023-12-02 00:12 Nextcloud is the app I heard the most complaints about. At this point I'm just can't believe the people who said it was zero maintenance. Maybe they've got small amounts of data, Idk. But I don't believe it. I myself have to find a solution and so far the one I've heard lot of positive about is Seafile. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- whatyouarereferring · 2023-12-02 01:14 dockerized nextcloud or the truenas charts make it so I do not handle my own updates anymore and it has never broken. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZaxLofful · 2023-12-02 03:14 I don’t really have any issues with my NextCloud, I like it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IdiocracyToday · 2023-12-02 03:30 Yup I just change the image tag whenever it says there’s an update and it has worked flawlessly so far. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A2251 · 2023-12-02 03:31 I just set this up in docker compose using NPM and it worked great. I also tested ram usage vs NC container and my stuff installed on owncloud took half the ram in the container vs NC container where no apps where installed yet and it was not set up yet. Also the app is nice and snappy on mobile and the browser. Desktop client on win 11 I feel like is so so but it worked. Make sure you are aware of the recent security issue with owncloud. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bagelsarenakeddonuts · 2023-12-02 07:35 I love seafile for its performance and functionality, but i really hate that it doesnt store files in a recoverable structure ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AxGuru1 · 2023-12-02 11:15 I went from Nextcloud to seafile and I am loving it. It just works. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Knukun · 2023-12-04 15:51 Was this a fresh install? I have two systems to upgrade, and one is pretty big. How smooth is the migration process? Is it just me or the documentation isn't very straightforward? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- A2251 · 2023-12-04 16:10 Yes mine was a fresh install. Overall I'm happy and I will stick to owncloud. I am happy to share my docker compose as I had to spend time getting it right. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Omemanti · 2023-12-23 08:21 Srry, notifications are turned off. Only 6 users and so far I only need about 4tb. But scaling up will be done on the linux server.
