Looking for reliable VPS/VDS server with 100% SLA and strong DDoS Protection. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-01 10:13 Hello. I run game servers so I need good connectivity, %0 packet loss at all times, and ddos protection. I have been searching for a while for a serivce that has strong ddos protection along with good network connectivity. Recently I have brought a couple of servers, which I will not name, that eather has had some really bad packet loss or very weak ddos protection. At this point I feel what ever server I buy is cursed. I am really finding it hard to find a good VPS host that is reliable and can withstand a (not even that strong) ddos attack. If anyone has any suggestions please please let me know. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FallenFromTheLadder · 2023-12-01 10:39 You want 100% SLA? Only if you make a deal with the guy that lives in your basement and runs your homelab. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WiseCookie69 · 2023-12-01 10:43 Nobody is going to guarantee you 100% SLA with your budget (and if you have to ask here, you certainly don't have it). My employer offers customers up to 99.99% with an internal goal of 99.999, but that's about it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ongrilla · 2023-12-01 10:46 Probably wants to pay $5 as well lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Docccc · 2023-12-01 10:51 how can we suggest something if you so t mention the ones you tried? anyway i can suggest hetzner ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thankyoufatmember · 2023-12-01 10:51 Don't we all brother ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Janpeterbalkellende · 2023-12-01 10:58 What your descirbing will cost you $$$ and ususaly wont be orderable on regualr order pages, youl have to request custom invoice ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Harryjms · 2023-12-01 11:04 Not even AWS will be 100% when you deploy multi region ---------------------------------------------------------------------- am_kobold · 2023-12-01 11:06 No such thing exists. Redundancy will be your friend for getting close to it. Don't focus on DDoS protection at the server/provider-level, but instead protect your services as appropriate. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-01 11:07 0.01% is still almost an hour per year. I don't know if OP can deal with that :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-01 11:09 I think it's also called high availability hosting. There are providers specializing in that and they are REALLY expensive, because that one digit after 99,9% generates a loooot of costs, for global redundancy and 24h personnel. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-01 11:32 I use a couple hetzner dedis for my backend servers. They are great. But then have no ddos protection. I need a few vps's to run all the traffic through. I use cloudlfare with geolocation for the reverse proxy's I just need recommendations please I am not worried about the cost. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-01 11:34 >m Where do you see in this post that I have a budget? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Docccc · 2023-12-01 11:35 hetzner has ddos protection? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-01 11:35 So, have you got any suggestions? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-01 11:35 Suggestions please. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-01 11:36 Thats fine. They have Windows and a variety of Linux boxes to choose from. Their networking options are second to none... But as with any other mature cloud service, best you get is 99.9%. Still, you could setup an NLB with a cluster or two (or more) simple nodes doing basic load balancing. All configure in the cloud. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -quakeguy- · 2023-12-01 11:43 There is no such thing as a 100% SLA and posting means you are nowhere near close to be able to afford a 99,999% one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Docccc · 2023-12-01 11:44 https://www.hetzner.com/unternehmen/ddos-schutz ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AdventurousSquash · 2023-12-01 11:48 Not completely true, one of our local(ish) competitors promise 100% but I have no idea how they’d do it since their infra isn’t built for it, probably something in the fine print once you’re in. Other than that I completely agree, no sane provider can guarantee 100%, shit happens. The company I work for is also 99,99% for multi AZ (and then 99,50% for single). We also have built in threat protection from known bad actors, with an option to use an external (outside of our dcs) DDoS protection at a cost per IP. We also peer traffic with most of the major ISPs which help with the connectivity. To OP, if you want good availability, make use of the self healing capabilities of whatever platform you’re using. For the network, make sure it’s really on the provider, most of the time it isn’t or they’d not be in business - unless they somehow only have customers not caring about network issues, which I highly doubt. Layer 2 DDoS attacks are also (in my experience) going down and I’m instead seeing more Layer 7 attacks (or attempts), making a WAF a more popular/needed protection today. But sure, it depends on what you’re hosting and if you’re a valuable target in the first place. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-12-01 11:57 What you are looking for seems to be managed service providers, every major Telco company offers this https://open-telekom-cloud.com/en/products-services/managed-services https://aws.amazon.com/managed-services/ And so on You have to call them. It's really expensive. Good luck ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-01 12:05 Thankyou for this reply. What service would you recommend for good ddos protection and a good network with no packet loss? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ikbosh · 2023-12-01 12:10 I cannot believe no one here knows Vultr. Vultr is a large scale DigitalOcean and Linode competitor who offers 100% SLA. DDoS protection is an optional add-on. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ikbosh · 2023-12-01 12:13 https://www.vultr.com/company/sla/ I don't even know where to begin with all these comments, literally a cloud provider who offers 100% SLA. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ikbosh · 2023-12-01 12:13 And he can have it for $5, https://www.vultr.com/company/sla/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ikbosh · 2023-12-01 12:14 Don't talk facts, talk experience "I don't believe such a thing exists." Because it does... https://www.vultr.com/company/sla/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- McRx71-Dragon · 2023-12-01 12:22 At first they do have a protection and second you are absolutely responsible for anything else. We do use their Server for our business (more than 40 Cloud and dedicated Server) and are more than happy. 100% Uptime isn’t possible that easy. It costs time and a huge amount of money. I haven’t seen your budget, but whatever Gameserver you‘re trying to host isn‘t worth the money this setup will cost. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -quakeguy- · 2023-12-01 12:24 I don’t even know where to begin with the comments of people somehow not understanding 100% SLA is really not a thing and anyone claiming to offer/sell you one is lying. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- graemep · 2023-12-01 12:30 Its pretty good but not really 100%: >The uptime guarantee ONLY applies to network and instance availability during normal operation. The uptime guarantee does NOT apply to server-side software uptime. Any outage due to server software, operating systems, improper configurations, denial of service attack against your instance, instance suspension, instance paused/halted for any reason, or any other non-network or non-"host node" outage, for any reason and **whether or not such outage is caused by Us** due to upgrading, troubleshooting or performing any other tasks, is not subject to this uptime guarantee. **The guarantee does NOT apply when a scheduled maintenance occurs** with a minimum of twenty-four (24) hour notice **or in the event a time critical patch/update must be applied** as long as the outage/packetloss does not exceed ten (10) minutes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ikbosh · 2023-12-01 12:39 An SLA is not a guarantee, because disasters happen out of a providers control, they're as the abbreviation suggests, an agreement. The SLA is their way of saying we're confident we can provide this level of service, and if we fail, we'll give you some, or all of your money back. So for normal circumstances, the system for all intents and purposes should be what the SLA is set to. Vultr has issues right now in Sydney, but will be refunding for those issues appropriately, meaning that people can enact their DR plans if they need fault tolerant systems and still be within budget for their expected infra costs outgoing. My job is private cloud infrastructure engineering. Fault tolerance and the ability to practically build in uptime guarantees for things you control is doable. I do this for a living and often am the one defining the SLA with our clients. But the idea in these scenarios as a consumer of the VPS services, the SLA let's you plan for what level of outages you will have to say maintenance. In a scenario like Vultr's you know their maintenance won't impact you. So you build a redundant system or good DR plan for if it does go wrong, but will rest easy knowing you're in good hands. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- totallynotreacher · 2023-12-01 12:58 Try combahton or a reseller such as DeinServerHost. It has pretty good DDoS protection, but not 100% SLA as others have mentioned, this such thing cannot be guaranteed in any way. SoYouStart or OVH are other solid choices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Shoddy_Hunter2609 · 2023-12-01 13:17 Knock the spam off ---------------------------------------------------------------------- -quakeguy- · 2023-12-01 13:29 I happen to work in infra too and around my parts, it’s considered bad manners to be selling something that is literally impossible to deliver and just pay customers reparation when you inevitably fail to deliver what you promised. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stryker1-1 · 2023-12-01 13:53 What's your budget / required specs? VPS/VDS is a space where you're going to get what you pay for. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ASCII_zero · 2023-12-01 14:30 Did you read the fine print? https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/s/HdAMR8wKKw ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AdventurousSquash · 2023-12-01 15:44 I’m going with the most IT response ever in; it depends! What game(s) are you hosting? Where is your userbase? To minimize network issues I’d probably look for something close by (especially if your users are also local). The Internet is robust but also means it tolerates packet loss to some degree, depending on the protocol used. To my knowledge a lot of games use UDP - in short it’s fast but doesn’t care if it drops packets, mainly because it wouldn’t have time to wait for a resend since the gameplay will keep going. This is especially true for games like FPS (and if you’ve ever played one you can see this when another player seemingly is where (s)he isn’t. All of these things and more would have to go into some kind of actual recommendations. Other things could be what kind of hosting you’re looking for, you mention VPS/VDS but if you’re a large game hoster, maybe you’d need a provider with a proper IaaS offering (and not just compute). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jwt4000 · 2023-12-01 19:07 Check out PheonixNap. What is it you're hosting? A game server, web application? SYS has the same protection as an essential OVH server, but OVH anti-DDoS GAME protection is superior. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-02 21:22 >eir Server for our business (more Hetzner have bad protection for game-servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-02 21:22 Appriciate the reply. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Mysterious_Rain9928 · 2023-12-02 21:24 It was about 7 years ago, cant remember. I may go with ovh game, not sure yet. All I need is good uptime, stable network and 30TB monthly traffic. Dont need strong cpu, a few cores will do, only need 1GB ram. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- totallynotreacher · 2023-12-02 21:33 Well, OVH servers are overkill then. You're looking at 32GB of RAM minimum with powerful CPUs. Maybe you're better off with Hetzner and a reverse proxy/UDP-tunneling provider with good protection. But again, depends on what you're hosting and how it's accessible for the people. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- McRx71-Dragon · 2023-12-03 03:26 Can’t really agree on that from my experience. I do host some private gameservers on Hüttner dedicated and cloud server and they do perform perfectly fine. I Addition I do care about any additional protection myself. Iptables, Fail2Ban are just some options and can work wonders.
