Considering moving to Emby from Jellyfin, anything I should know? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- etay080 · 2023-11-30 22:16 While I love Jellyfin its clients always leave something to be desired Be it thumbnail scrubbing which only works with a plugin but doesn't work on Android TV while Emby implements that flawlessly or intro skipping which suffers from the same issues as scrubbing and although I've yet to try intro skipping in Emby, I've read that it works perfectly. I've tried Emby for a few hours and it really does seem better than Jellyfin The only downside I could find is that switching between users in Android TV always asks me for their password which is quite annoying but it is to my understanding that it will be addressed in 4.8 (could be wrong) So with that being said, should I know anything before making the switch? Perhaps I'm making a mistake and should be more patient with Jellyfin's development? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ConsciousBank4668 · 2023-12-01 00:15 If you don't pay for premium you'll see pop ups about it. I probably would have ended up paying for it, but it was so annoying when I was trying it out that I switched back before I really gave it a chance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tankerkiller125real · 2023-12-01 00:45 The fact that hardware transcoding is locked behind a paywall is what got me to switch to Jellyfin. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- etay080 · 2023-12-01 06:03 Seems like Emby isn't liked around these parts, would have been nice to explain why instead of downvoting... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- violet-crayola · 2023-12-01 07:41 Its lumpen proletariat, they have no moneys and hate they idea of paying ---------------------------------------------------------------------- estevez__ · 2023-12-01 08:24 If you are ready to pay for the features, you definitely should try Plex as well and then decide. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- etay080 · 2023-12-01 08:25 I've tried Plex but it feels way too bloated. Plus I highly dislike the idea that user accounts should be created with Plex's cloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- estevez__ · 2023-12-01 08:26 There is a "Plex home" that allows you to create local profiles without having to create Plex accounts ---------------------------------------------------------------------- etay080 · 2023-12-01 08:27 Interesting. I'll look into it, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ben4425 · 2023-12-01 10:56 I use the Traefik reverse proxy to share some services to family members over the internet and my Emby server is one of those services. Those services are on Docker so I gave Jellyfin a test drive running on the same Docker server as Emby. Even though Jellyfin is (supposedly) based on Emby, I could *not* access it via Traefik. It was throwing errors about invalid HTTP headers or something. I googled around and never found a solution so I gave up on the test drive and stayed with Emby. Just beware Jellyfin may not play nicely with a reverse proxy even though Emby does. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Arty__ · 2023-12-01 15:05 I don't have any problem with reverse proxy (Nginx) and Jellyfin! What was your issue? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- qbar · 2023-12-01 16:11 Do it!!! I have flip-flopped back and forth between Jellyfin, Plex, and Emby over the years. For my setup, Emby works the best. I have a few features that are requirements that it does best. 1. Refresh rate switching: it dramatically approves image quality on my TV. This breaks audio passthrough on Jellyfin on my Shield. Plex pauses after the refresh rate switching completes, so I have to essentially hit play twice. Emby does it perfectly. 2. Audio Passthrough: Broken on Jellyfin for Shield. Works perfectly in Emby. 3. Intro Skipping: Built in to Emby and works great. 4. Doesn't shove other services down my throat like Plex. Try it for a month and compare. A month of Premium will only cost you $5. All that said, honestly, if i didn't care about refresh rate switching or audio passthrough, Jellyfin would be fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CooliMC · 2023-12-01 16:13 That sounds like a typical layer 8 problem … ---------------------------------------------------------------------- etay080 · 2023-12-01 16:31 Jellyfin is actually working fine with my nginx proxu manager. Could be different with Traefik though ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ben4425 · 2023-12-01 23:52 I don't recall the details but it didn't matter because the Jellyfin app on my Sony Bravia TV worked poorly even within my home network. (It was nearly unusable). So, with my equipment, JF was a double failure - TV and Traefik reverse proxy - while Emby works fine.
