Tell me your most exotic selfhosted solution, the crazier, the better, no 0815 solutions! reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-30 07:51 I don’t want to hear about your Plex, your NPM, your notes application or science forbid, your budgeting application. I want to hear the most exotic thing you setup to selfhost, that probably only you and a hand full of people around the world actually use or even need. A problem that you solved in a way, that makes people go **WTF**. Go! I’ll start: I live in the mountains, and there is snow, lots of snow. I often tell people *“We had 3m of snow last year”*, but is that really true? So, I thought to myself: Can you measure snowfall? It seems you can, so I setup a USH-9 ultra sound measuring device, connected it via IC2 to my Home Assistant and now I can tell people with confidence, that we had a total of 3.45m of snowfall last season, with max snow height of 60cm on January 5th. Future project: I have chickens. They lay eggs. I have cameras. I want to know which hen lays how many eggs. Solution? AI image recognition of the hens (who is who) and if they have laid an egg. Any inputs welcome. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- geek_at · 2023-11-30 08:12 How about a selfhostable [trashmail solution](https://github.com/HaschekSolutions/opentrashmail) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SocialSlacker · 2023-11-30 08:19 I too have a chicken cam, but no image recognition at this point. However, I have used it to discover that an opossum was breaking in and eating the eggs. Other than that, the most unique things I have cobbled together are probably these: \- I work from home, so I created an automation using Home Assistant to tie into the Webex API to determine if I'm on a call or busy and, if so, turn on my Do Not Disturb light so that people don't just barge into my office. \- A script my son can run from my OliveTin dashboard to update our Minecraft server (docker container). \- Another script I can run from my OliveTin dashboard to log into my firewall and disable/enable my son's internet. \-- Both of these scripts notify me when they've been run via ntfy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-30 08:25 Basically, Email to file. Measurement was via shunts. Great job! Show’s the beauty of HA that most people miss when all they do is the standard stuff, but you can basically do **anything** you can imagine. I have door sensors and instead of only relying on a baby monitor, when my toddlers open their door after 2200, the lights turn on in the hallways (so they see something) and a light in our bedroom turns on as well as a notification on the phone. The nodes run custom immutable images in RAM and only uses disk for container cache and persistent volume data. Etcd data also lives in RAM, so I have a custom wrapper service around etcd that takes regular snapshot backups to S3, restores as needed, and also manages replacing members. The problem was that many times I had something else to do and couldn’t wait for the fire to go out and close the hatch that lets air in the boiler. If the hatch is left open the air goes thru the boiler and cools it down quicker. The solution: I installed a raspberry pi with a usb cd drive. From the cd drive I tied a fishing line via the adjusting arm to the hatch. When the cd drive opens the hatch closes. I then host a website on the raspberry where I can push for example on ”Close the hatch after one hour” and it would do it. There's a scale with a reader on the nests. This helps identify who laid an egg and graphs the weight of each chicken. The coop has a door with a reader that lets chickens in, but not out. The door opens at determined times. There was more, but I don't remember it all. The whole thing was part of a hackathon contest. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-30 12:45 As I mentioned I had bad experience with anything around their feet, two chicken have lost a foot and had to be butchered due to infection of the tag. It does not work on all chicken breeds. I have one of the largest: Brahma. They have feathers on their feet and very, very thick leg and lots of muscles (especially the males), so I’m not tempted to put anything again on their feet. That the door opens when they come is a bit useless from my point of view as a breeder. You open the door in the morning and close it in the evening (automatically or manual), that’s about it, there is no need to lock the door during the day. The feeding and watering is doubtful because you don’t see how much they eat like that, they eat and drink through out the whole day. Sounds like a fun project, but a little away from the reality. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool, but in the end technology, at least to me, is a tool that has to make sense. Depending on how many chickens you keep, you see very easily if one is sick, and if you have 100’000 birds such a system would not even work due to cost for all the installations. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- parer55 · 2023-11-30 12:46 Was running a HA server on RPI3B, connected to my Bluetooth plant sensor, connected to a telegram bot. The first is exotic purpose, the second is just tightly integrated so much that it might be only useful to me. ### Smashcam I live on a busy corner, in an otherwise slow and sleepy town right outside the city line. I live between a lot of town services on one side (fire house, library, athletic fields, town hall) and the elementary school on the other side. Pedestrian traffic is very high, the amount of children crossing is very high, bicycles abounds, and the cross street between them is decently high traffic. So I see a decent amount of car accidents on my corner. 30mph limits on both streets so usually not catastrophic, you might be driving away instead of towed. But the repairs will be substantial on most of these. To provide an objective reality-as-a-service, I set up a camera high up in the eaves of my roof pointed right at the intersection. I've sent the police enough clips that they know where to archive my emails for evidence by routine. I've started training a model to detect car crash noises (and honks) to cut and save the clips automatically. It's not reliable enough yet, but this could become a reasonable pipeline: Car crash audio detected -> Notification "Possible crash, do you want to review the footage and send to the po-po?" -> manual human review to make sure we're not sending false positives -> hit send -> email with clip constructed and sent ### Photos This is not exotic in terms of its purpose. Lots or people have self- hosted photo sites (heres a whole [chart of them all](https://github.com/meichthys/foss_photo_libraries)!) But none of them integrated with my foss RAW editor darktable. So I built my own photo site alternative that parses the darktable edit files and DB. So now on the web, I can see the ☆ ratings I gave the photos in my editor. The tags and labels, etc. I parse the RAW files to show the focus boxes that the cameras write in the metadata when they took the picture, the facial recognition bounding boxes, etc. And it shows the edit history stack and all the edits from my RAW editor. And of course, it has the left-right swiper to show before/after the photo edits. I can export any size, and it calls out to darktable with command-line control to export with the given edit stack to make the JPG of whatever size I'm requesting. So yes, alternatives exist. Mine is simply very specialized to a particular editor program. I don't believe I made the repo public, so as far as I know, I (and my family) are the only ones using it. It's probably more featureful than things I _have_ released. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- highedutechsup · 2023-11-30 13:37 100g in the mountains? For example, I'd like to have my own Bitwarden instance publicly reachable, but not widely available to the whole world-- I want to keep scripts kiddies away from my infra. So even though I have set up most of my services to be available mostly through a VPN, I like to have a last-resort access to some services over the 'net when i'm away (say, remotely at work). So I (ab)used Caddy's `forward_auth` directive so I can whitelist a set of external IPs (and allow myself in using a TOTP code). I have written a Python app that goes hand-in-hand with my Caddy server blocks, that helps with denying/allowing access to my critical services. https://github.com/bilange/caddyknocker Why? My brother, who lives 3 hours from me, and has time for ripping, operates a machine with 4 automated disk drives that is vpn'd into my network. Because direct ripping onto a network drive is so slow it rips to the local disk and then has a cron to move the files over the network once they are done. Once there, the files get round robbin'd into 3 different folders to be transcoded by 3 different automated handbrakes. On 3 separate servers (r720xd). (For speed) Those servers are running kubernetes. Once the files are transcoded a custom script scans the files and uploads them to nocodb. In noco db anyone in my extended family can, preview one of the files via a tiny video streaming page (like 10 lines of html) to figure out what the file is. Then they decide if it's a TV show or movie, then set the title, or season/episode and check off that it's ready for moving. Then the same script comes in and scrapes nocodb for files that are ready and moves them into the correct Plex folder, renaming them appropriately. It also has support for using ffmpeg to split video files into multiple files. This whole setup basically means I don't have to do much media organizing but I do manage the server and movies just show up. If it adds to it, my cluster is running rook/ceph with a bunch of random hard drives that were a good price. I can be streaming a TV show on Plex and just yoink a random disk drive out and nothing happens. I could have probably just engineered a better cooling solution, but i had all the stuff I needed to do this, and it's very entertaining to me every time the server tells him its cold. i also have a container that runs discord bot that does archiving of all of my servers to one central location once every 24 hours, and another container that hosts a read only front end for it. i got annoyed that the archive script doesn't have the ability to make the bot show up as online, so i wrote 20 lines of python that i then wrapped in a private dockerfile running python, where on boot the container downloads the git repository of this simple bot and runs it, just in case i decided to do anything clever with it and forget to update the container. pushed it to the cluster. bot shows up as online. 20 lines of python code, 200mb uncompressed container. The display looked like a 1500x500 image (though it was a website), where the sun (or moon), clouds (or rain or snow, etc.), were positioned differently based on the weather and time of the day. Additionally, the temperature and other details were displayed. Then, the script would call an HTML to PDF tool to generate an image from it. This image was, at that time, uploaded to Twitter as my profile banner image. A server cron job would run the script every hour, so my banner would be updated every hour to reflect the weather at my home position. Why did I do this? I have no idea. Not even sure if anyone noticed, but I could, so I did! Eventually, I ended up turning the script off at some point because it felt childish. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sirrush7 · 2023-11-30 16:04 For detection of chickens and such, you could likely use Frigate NVR paired with a hardware accelerated gpu for deception based on algorithms. https://docs.frigate.video/configuration/objects/ It has birds as an option in the builtin object detections so maybe that would pick up a chicken! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BCTripster · 2023-11-30 16:06 Oh man, kids these days! My youngest stepson (now 22 and attending uni) is still with us and I've had to do all of that over the years, he was decent in school but his grades dropped immediately once my wife decided he needed a cell phone. He's an addicted gamer, that's his priority in life, hardly goes out, stays up until 2 or 3AM even if he has to be up at 6 to head to uni. Spends almost all his time alone in his room. Can't wake himself, even with multiple alarms blaring they'll be going for 45 minutes before we get tired of it and go shout at him. When he was in high school I had to enact the internet blocks, once he was done I told him he had to adult now and start getting ready to be an actual functioning adult. It's semi-worked but not totally. We still have issues with him unable to get up, late for school some days because he slept thru his alarm. Had a talk to him recently about where his focus should be, how he needs to cut back on gaming, start networking so he actually lands a job in the career path he has chosen, get out in the world, etc. One ask I had, be up at 8AM weekdays, school or not. And, hasn't worked, still up until 3AM nightly, even on the days where he actually has to get up to be at uni early. So, back to some interesting DNS blocks, I no longer just kill his internet but certain protocols mysteriously stop resolving around midnight. But looking at the logs, he just switches to watching YouTube or Plex until 2 or 3AM. Not much I can do really, if I cut his internet he just goes to his phone off wifi. They really hate having IT savvy parents. He has even contemplated ordering his own internet connection he's said, won't happen though since that would cut into his meager budget where he works little hours because, rather be gaming. :) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- akerro · 2023-11-30 16:08 Are you sure you're not just young? [https://github.com/Oni/galle](https://github.com/Oni/galle) My approach is a bit different: I've written a TCP proxy (not only http) that accepts incoming connections on certain ports and each port is mapped to a given upstream. The connection source is extracted by the PROXY protocol header attached to it. I'm using this approach so that I can apply it to many types of connections like ssh or git without using customized clients. On the edge of my network there is an FRP server ([https://github.com/fatedier/frp](https://github.com/fatedier/frp)) that pipes connections to an FRP client inside my Docker network attaching the PROXY protocol header. The FRP client, in turn, pipes stuff to my proxy that blocks stuff if needed. The tricky part is https traffic: my proxy redirects allowed https traffic to nginx on port X and unallowed https traffic to nginx on port Y. If I want to expose a certain service to the world, I just need to make nginx listen ports X and Y, otherwise just listen to port X. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kompost88 · 2023-11-30 17:12 I did video projection for theaters and used old CD drives as dowsers (shutters), to stop light from beamers in dark scenes. The kid interface had a simple green button they could click to say they'd done their chore. When THAT happened, their fake bank allowance balance would increase. This project arose because I used to use a Surface tablet (great thing, shame about the lack of apps) and reading comics/manga. The app I found would use your OneDrive/Google Drive/etc for your storage. At the time I also had access to a repository of regularly updating manga, that would mirror over to one of my larger storage servers every evening. What I therefore did was create a system which would push any manga I followed into OneDrive which I could then read on my tablet/elsewhere. This app became buggy over the years and eventually annoyed me enough to change apps. What also ended up happening was the repository for manga died out, I then moved to other locations and to the Tachiyomi app. With this I found out about Komga for handling books/comics/manga/etc. So what currently happens is: Komga + storage locally hosted. Every hour on a remote server a python script will check for new items from manga I follow on various manga sites. These will be downloaded (via custom Python script) into a specific archive file naming format, that then gets synced over WebDAV and SFTP to the Komga storage and backup storage, using the Komga API this triggers a rescan to pickup the new items. One of the issues with Komga is that it doesn't read chapter numbers from the filenames, so another script then goes through and properly numbers the chapters in the folders. For comics, I have Mylar performing the checks, though this can be a bit shit so I usually end up doing the naming and organisation myself. All this then accumlates in me being able to read these on my phone in Tachiyomi on Android. It's mostly a result of mild OCD, but has got me over when some sites go down or do stupid things. It was a fun project with a bit of coding involved, I'm not sure how I'd improve it in the future really. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Korlus · 2023-11-30 20:01 According to multiple sources (e.g. [this one](https://cat.org.uk/info-resources/free-information- service/energy/micro-hydro/)), you want to look at throughput of around 10 litres per second, down 10 meters for 1kW of power (without efficiency losses). Most hydro systems are 50-70% efficient, so you'd be looking at doubling either the flow rate or the drop height to get those kinds of throughput numbers in real world scenarios. Some of the latest kits might be 80-90% efficient, but friction is one of the major losses, and is difficult to minimize over such a drop. Easy to do with a reasonable sized stream, but difficult for your average joe, who doesn't have a major height change in his back yard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 0xKaishakunin · 2023-11-30 20:02 But if I use Plex to stream 08/15? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- isleepbad · 2023-11-30 20:10 Sure. - Orchestration: [Kestra](https://kestra.io/docs). If a kubelet becomes unresponsive, or if a pod cannot be stopped on a node, or if a volume cannot be unmounted, the fencing agent (run as a deployment) will cut power to the offending node. All nodes are ARM dev boards. All nodes are redundantly powered by two GPIO relay boards, controlled by two Pi Zeros. The fencing agent communicates with the Pi Zeros. The DC PDU fails open in case of GPIO failure. After that, it's all pretty boring. I host my stuff on it. It could get less boring, because each node is a dev board. I didn't want to start my desktop PC and login just for using wifi with my phone or laptop (and didn't even have an AP at the time), so I bought a Pi and used a systemd service and sshpass to do it for me. Now I could always access the internet, but I didn't see the login messages telling me how much data remained for the month. To fix this, I dumped the server login message to a file and parsed it in a different script to display the remaining data on a small 16x2 LCD display for the Pi. The hidden ones are due to redditors trolling or being outright shitheads, so I had to hide some projects temporarily. Timezone aware clocks I have a wall of eight timezone aware clocks, with the arms controlled via stepper motors to a single raspberry pi. The Raspberry Pi also controls eight separate OLED displays that are made to emulate VFDs. And then I set each clock to the timezone it corresponds to, pull the weather and temps from the internet and send them to each display, and also show some headlines for the region. When you need to talk to a client, you know what time it is there, what the weather is like, and recent news headlines. Chore list I have a chore list that displays on 12"x4" touch screen, with physical electromechanical toggle switches that are controlled by a raspberry pi. This chore list reminds me to clean the litter box, water the plants, pay the car insurance, etc. When I complete a chore, I flip the physical toggle switch and the chore gets marked as done until the next time. After a while, the chore disappears from the display, and the raspberry pi releases the electromagnet and resets the physical toggle switch back to the "undone" position. Jukebox I have a physical jukebox I built, that mounts on the wall, that streams music from my Synology. It has a bunch of super satisfying to press clicky tactile LED illuminated arcade buttons for track select, and the track lists are shown on two 4K 12"x4" touch screens. There's two more 1920 curved touchscreens for the marquee to show album art and for navigation. That's a single raspberry pi controlling four separate touch screens and about 50 buttons. When you press a button to play a track, the button locks down, like on the old car radios, but the raspberry pi when switching tracks can physically retract or release the buttons too. There's a software defined jog wheel that has an OLED display to control the volume, but the raspberry pi can turn the physical dial too. That's wired into chatgpt, speech to text and text to speech, with cortana as the voice, and I can say things like "whatever happened to the lead singer of this band?" or "Play a random shuffle of more tracks from this year." Memories 18x 9" OLED screens that display a photo montage and photo gallery of family pictures all controlled by a raspberry pi. The Wall It's a half-dozen salvaged OLED displays built into a false wall behind some sliding shoji screens. The displays are driven by some old piece-of-shit computer and GPU. They display nature scenes. It's an enormous digital window. Home Health I have a smart dashboard that tracks my cats, phones, wallets, weather, and a bunch of other info that is displayed on an ipad by the coffee machine. Daily Guk It's an old 21" android tablet that displays only good headlines, daily funny comics, weather, upcoming calendar, etc. Cat Toy It's a 55" touch screen that entertains my cats. Android stick plugged into the back running some custom Unity3D games. Walking Timer I built a timer that tracks how long we walk, and how many laps we do around the block, and then I grab the images from the doorbell camera and use computer vision and gait analysis to automatically detects when we leave, when we return, and how many times we walked past the front door on our laps, and calculates our speed. CNC Controller I have a CNC controlled by a Raspberry Pi, which in turn is controlled by an Android tablet. So if the UI crashes, the CNC will continue running the gcode. This could now be replaced by other open source projects that have become available since I created this setup. RV Sync I have an all flash NAS at the RV which is set to automatically sync the video & music directories, and a few other directories, between my NAS at my home and the NAS in the RV so that all the contents are available when on the road, even if internet is a bit wonky. Retired Projects Cat Litter Robot This was a litter box, with a Kinect, a web cam, a Fujitsu robot arm, and Amazon's Mechanical Turk. The robot arm was controllable via a web UI and it live streamed the litter box. When a cat did their business, the kinect detected that, weighed the litter box, and then sent a request to mechanical turk to have someone clean the litter box for 25 cents. And then when they were done, two more requests were sent to mechanical turk to have other people independently verify that the video showed the litter box being cleaned adequately. Giant Waterfall Ring Toss An art gallery in Los Angeles wanted something as an attraction due to the pandemic, so I salvaged a 55" display, built an enclosure, and installed it in the upper glass portion of the door frame of the art gallery, and people could play the classic "Waterfall Ring Toss" game by mashing a great big button. Remote Control Cat Toy I built a web browser controlled remote cat toy with one of those feathers on a wand controlled by a number of servos. And also added a laser point option too. Then had a bunch of web cams live stream the adoptable cats in the shelter. And people could donate a $1 to "play the arcade game" with cats that would get unlocked as people contributed more money. Planetarium I built a 12 foot wide classic planetarium driven by a raspberry pi and a lot of really strong high torque servos for a science museum exhibit. Kids could use a jog shuttle dial to rotate the planetary orbits. The Matrix Camera Capture Rig I built a cheap camera capture rig for a science museum that works like the Bullet Time rigs, but this was done with cheap point & shoot SONY cameras. Patrons sit on a couch, or pose in a movie set, and the capture rig takes a snapshot, puts a video on the monitor for them that orbits the subjects. Digital Sandbox RTS A box of physical "wet sand" that you could play in, that projected an image from three overhead projectors, and you controlled a small army you could send into combat against other people playing in the sandbox. Kind of like a simple Populous game. That was on display at one of the Los Angeles kids science museums for a few years. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- drMonkeyBalls · 2023-11-30 21:56 My town used to post our garbage pickup schedule as a photo pdf to our town's website. They tend to change when garbage will be picked up randomly espcially near holidays, so it can be annoying and we'd end up running out in the morning when we heard the truck driving by on 'off' days The changes always made it into the calendar at least the night before. I have a flag pole that I carry to festivals. I added a sophisticated LED strip to the flag pole. It‘s driven by WLED, which is not so special, but since it‘s driven by a power bank and it should last for the whole festival, I added a circuit that controls a relay with a light sensor to power off the thing when it‘s daylight. But the relay circuit did not draw enough power to keep the power bank powered on. So I needed to add a 555 timer circuit to draw little power every x milliseconds to keep the power bank alive. It detects water leaks using ML trained on a year's worth of data. So far it's stopped one basement from flooding, and a small leak under the parking lot before it turned into a sink hole. Cost like $60 I use the ARM (automatic ripping machine) docker container in my streaming box to automatically rip and transcode dvd and bd's with subtitles and special features for jellyfin with little to no manual input. A family member owns a farm so I wrote a plant "health level" checker that uses cameras mounted to a center pivot sprinkler system to check how healthy the plants are. It mostly works because of our apartment layout. The router sits in a large open common room with kitchen and hallway where the signal strength is at its maximum. Then there is a corridor where the bathroom and bedrooms are located. Because the router is at the begging of an corridor it will pass through a fixed number of walls for each room. Some rooms have the same number of walls and therefore somewhat similar signal strength but we also know which phone should be in which room so we can figure it all out with that information. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Yukanojo · 2023-12-01 01:18 I'm writing a custom peer-to-peer protocol for LoRa. My goal is to create a protocol that provides data integrity and confidentiality at the protocol layer in a simple Python library that gives the python coder simple functions to request data be send and check for received data. Goal is to have as little configuration requirements as possible and let the protocol manage everything but still allow tweaking as necessary. Ideally it'll manage the LoRa radios and seek out other LoRa radios running the same protocol and establish a net with them. I'm hoping to get simple relaying to work automatically. I configured IPTables to NAT masquerade out each interface and I set up Quagga, a routing daemon to talk to my main gateway and redistributed my kernel routes into OSPF. At the start of Covid, got stuck in a very remote area of Australia. No access to good internet, and as a Software Dev that wasn't going to fly (this was pre-starlink). But all I did was write HTTP Endpoints hooked up to functions that send structured SSH commands to the **busybox** instance that my ISP's router was using. I was using 2x LTE Carriers with a Netcomm Modem that was hooked up to a 4G/LTE Antenna pointed at the closest cell tower. The reason I did this is because 99% of consumer LTE routers, do not give you full access of all the information and settings that a Quectel Module can offer. So, I hunted down the documentation for the Quectel Models and started spitting commands at it and that turned into this mini project. And it is how I have my k3s cluster right now. But it was a fun concept I explored this past summer, since at my location here, in west Spain temperatures reach up to 50°C, so it is either the weather or the decoy services (and most likely both) that would trigger the AC on which was convenient anyway. When you're using the service (networking) in a stand alone k3s cluster, you can either use node port (dont) or service with External IP. But as far as the OG question goes, no you dont need helm charts. You can use raw manifests, or just the kubectl command natively. --- I just realized half way through this comment that you meant can you basically take your `docker-compose.yaml` file and deploy it on k3s. Almost. I guess I meant it more in the sense of is it easy to look at a compose or run command and create a kubernetes layout. E.g. I use Terraform so I have to manually create my .tf files. A deployment is the system to run pods, those change with each app, sometimes they have environment variables etc. I wrap all my files up in helm charts in a way that I can copy and paste common things. With tf modules, you can sort of do the same with helm charts, like if you have a certain way you make a load balancer, you write a helm chart for that and set it as a dependency in your app chart. Kompose is great for getting stuff over to k8’s, but my best advice would be this: pick a simple service like Bookstack, run an external database and just deploy bookstack your self. I've got my 0815(great term btw) sorted and this gives me such inspiration to scratch the "ok, what can I learn next" itch. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLinuxMailman · 2023-12-03 02:21 I built a temperature monitor for my freezer with a Pi Zero W and DS18B20, to email me ASAP if it starts to warm up abnormally. Why use an embedded controller and few lines of C when a full Linux distro and Python will do? (Hey I'm u/TheLinuxMailman!) It also monitors the compressor duty cycle and temperature, which is a theory I am testing. about getting and an earlier indication of pending failure before the food starts to defrost. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLinuxMailman · 2023-12-03 02:32 Time for better half 2.0 :-) I'm fortunate. Mine was an early embedded SW Eng. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLinuxMailman · 2023-12-03 02:45 Nice. A local Linux dev put a simpler PV monitoring station up at his cottage, running his version of Gentoo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheLinuxMailman · 2023-12-03 02:53 >I ran MythTV for years and years until I moved and could only get digital cable and digital ota My cable provider's STB had component out. I fed that into a Hauppage digitizer operated by Myth. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Kompost88 · 2023-12-03 14:53 No, I got a job as an IT admin when my daughter was born, I really loved doing sound and video, but hours were just too long and irregular. Salary in IT is also better. Sometimes I miss my first career though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NCWildcatFan · 2023-12-03 16:24 I’m on WebEx probably 60% of my day. I need to figure out this API solution for myself. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Jawn78 · 2023-12-03 18:48 That's a fair warning. TBH mine was probably more secure than it needed to be considering all it did was open up a security door of the building that was often propped open lol. It used an authenticator and was hosted with a SSL certificated, password was sent encrypted, MFA for user sign-up, etc. I also only had 12 units in my building with only about 8 people using it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SocialSlacker · 2023-12-03 22:59 u/NCWildcatFan \- Check out this writeup and DM me if you have any questions. https://notes.brianheston.com/books/automation/page/webex-status-light ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SocialSlacker · 2023-12-03 23:58 Links to those posts? :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DavethegraveHunter · 2023-12-04 07:04 They all send images back to my server, so yes, they’re all online. Normal security cameras aren’t sufficient. They need a decent sensor with good low-light sensitivity, plus a gazillion other things that also has to be just right (with the camera and the support equipment) for it all to work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SteradDigital · 2023-12-04 22:49 Yoooo it's actually Liam Cottle! Big fan of your work on Casper man. Still miss it 🔥🔥 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IgorShults · 2023-12-05 03:56 Seems like there's already a good amount of chicken automations, but just figured I'd add my own! I have a motion + temperature sensor in the chicken coop. When motion is detected, and the temperature is low enough (or it is nighttime), a heating pad connected to a Z-wave outlet is turned on and stays on until a warm enough temperature is reached. This ensures the chickens are warm at night, or when they go into the coop on particularly cold days. This setup saves power compared to leaving the heating pad on 24/7, and also encourages the chickens to not just sit in the coop on mildly cold days. (I live in Minnesota, so when it gets TOO cold [I mean like, -40 with windchill] I will actually bring them inside for a day or two.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-12-05 08:58 You are aware that chicken can tolerate up to -30°C with no issue? I don’t heat my coop and I get -10°C for days on a regular basis. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IgorShults · 2023-12-05 18:17 Yep! Like I said though, I live in Minnesota, so temperatures drop pretty low. The breeds I have seem to get uncomfortable around -20° F. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- [deleted] · 2023-12-06 11:41 [removed] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Floroform · 2023-12-06 19:52 Hi, maybe you just think a little too complex in here. I just created a pre consume script. I eventually ran the shitty Windows executable in a VM and re-configured it, but that wasn't as fun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thisisabore · 2023-12-07 13:57 Pretty cool, thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EuroRob · 2023-12-08 20:10 Aber Switze Deutsch ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bahuma20 · 2023-12-09 16:55 Tried it and after some bugfixes (created a PR) it works like a charm :-) My problem was that i hate bash scripting and therefore searched for a solution that is implemented in Node.JS (even if it was much more complicated...) But now i switched to your script :D ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Floroform · 2023-12-09 17:24 Nice to hear!
