New NAS almost complete - Advice Needed reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- laglink17 · 2023-11-29 18:22 I'm on my way to build my new NAS. I've been buying some parts from time to time in the last year. This I what I currently have: |Part|Price|Comment| |:-|:-|:-| |CPU: Intel Celeron G6900 |35$|Bought with a gifted GC, so technically, I got it for free.| |MoBo: Gigabyte B760M DS3H DDR4|99$|Just bought it.| |RAM: Silicon Power Gaming Series DDR4 32GB (2x16GB) 3200MHz|53$|And about 15$ more for shipping.| I'm still missing a case and PSU. I was thinking about going with a normal but small case and use a 4x3.5" bay I got laying around (with some DIY to be able to attach it to the case) I'm not so sure about the PSU... 500W should be more than enough, but I'm still looking around. I recently saw the Thermaltake Smart White 80+ on sale, for 35$, but I thought it was too cheap. My biggest concern is about HDD capacity. I currently have 3x 8TB and one 4 TB. I don't want to use more than 5 drives and maybe a SATA SSD for caching, but the mobo only has 4 SATA Ports. **If I use a M2 to SATA or PCIe to SATA for expansion, will this piece prevent the system for reaching better C-states?** The same will happen if I add a 10Gbe PCIe card? I want to optimice power consumption as much as possible. About software, I just want to use this NAS from streaming (Navidrome, Plex, Jellyfin) and downloads (torrent, ytdl, \*\*arr apps). I have another server for FW, Bitwarden and things like that. So I believe this NAS would be on idle most of the time. Thanks for any advice you can give me! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hdddanbrown · 2023-11-29 19:10 bla bla software sub not hardware
