Pihole or Adguard, what is better? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xanderox1 · 2023-11-29 12:34 Right now I have pihole, it works really good but pivpn and wireguard don't, I don't know what to do, so I think I should change to Adguard with wireguard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spanky_rockets · 2023-11-29 12:42 Why doesn’t WireGuard work? I haven’t had any issues with mine at all really. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-11-29 12:48 Your problem likely does not require replacing your current DNS server. Nonetheless, I personally like and prefer AGH. I run multiple instances and sync them with [https://github.com/bakito/adguardhome- sync](https://github.com/bakito/adguardhome-sync) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yarisken75 · 2023-11-29 12:55 Never used pihole but adguard works like a charm. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- acbadam42 · 2023-11-29 12:58 I run pi hole at both my computer repair business and my home. Ad guard actually has, not necessarily more features, but features that are more accessible to the user through the GUI. The problem is that it seemed to have too many features. I always found myself tinkering with it while my attitude with pi hole has always been a set and forget it mindset. At one point I was running pi hole at one location and ad guard at the other so I could do an apples to apples comparison. If you want to be able to tinker with your DNS settings through an easier to use interface use ad guard. They both do pretty much the same thing though at least they did for my needs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Xanderox1 · 2023-11-29 12:59 Well, it was working, but one day it just stopped, randomly, I didn't change anything. Everything else still worked fine(nextcloud, pihole(without wireguard), portainer, nginix proxy manager). I just spend too much time trying to fix this, The last solution is to reinstall or install something else ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bufandatl · 2023-11-29 13:10 Pihole is better because it has LCARS. For your VPN problem that’s not related to pihole. That’s most likely some networking issue and some settings you changed and then forgot about it. Did you try ping, traceroutes, tcpdump queries etc to diagnose the problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spanky_rockets · 2023-11-29 13:34 I have the same setup, pihole with WireGuard for ad blocking on the go. I used pivpn as well which definitely makes the WireGuard setup easier, but still not as easy as pihole. I won’t lie I def struggled with WireGuard, but it works great once you figure out how to make it work for you, definitely takes time. Maybe consider switching to tailscale? I’ve heard great things, sounds like a much easier setup but it’s still WireGuard. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-29 13:37 You could just install Adguard and see which you like better. It only take like 5 minutes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zhyphirus · 2023-11-29 14:21 Genuine question: Why run multiple instances of AGH? Is there a specific use case that this would be applicable, or is it just a good practice having more than one dns server available? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- notdoreen · 2023-11-29 14:22 Do you also use ad blockers? Does pihole block YouTube ads? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-11-29 14:39 Just for load balancing and to have a fallback. Many people think that the "secondary" DNS server is a fallback and will only be queried if the "primary" is down. This is false. Both will be queried no matter what. So having the primary and secondary DNS point to different instances has a benefit. As both instances can be synced, no additional effort occurs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raithmir · 2023-11-29 14:40 Much preferred AdGuard Home to PiHole, but switched to Technitium for all my DHCP/DNS/Ad Blocking. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- spanky_rockets · 2023-11-29 14:41 Pihole will not block YouTube ads embedded in videos. I use uBlock origin on desktop and AdGuards mobile app for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zhyphirus · 2023-11-29 14:56 That's really interesting, I had no idea this was possible, I'm guessing you do that with two machines since they need to run on port 53, right? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SourceDocMD · 2023-11-29 14:57 Wait, PiHole has [LCARS](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LCARS)??? What am I missing? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ReturnOfFrank · 2023-11-29 15:02 Did you change any network settings or anything? I noticed pivpn doesn't like to update internet adapters, for example (mine broke when I went from wireless to ethernet). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-11-29 15:06 Yeah I have two LXC containers. Otherwise, one may use macvlan network in docker to obtain two IPs. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Zhyphirus · 2023-11-29 15:12 Really cool, thanks for the info. I will be doing this somewhere in the future ---------------------------------------------------------------------- r0zzy5 · 2023-11-29 15:31 I've been wondering about trying Technitium. What do you prefer about it? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raithmir · 2023-11-29 15:41 DNS/DHCP support in PiHole just seemed really clunky. Technitium is primarily a very good DNS server, pretty decent DHCP server, and blocks ads just as well. The fancy graphs for ad blocking stats were nicer in AdGuard though. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nandry123 · 2023-11-29 15:46 You need to provide more details about your setup. I use PiHole on internal network and wireguard server on edgerouter to connect from outside. I wireguard to connect to my network on the go to do adblocking on my phone and laptop. Never had any issues with either. If I eber had issues with wireguard it was always config on eithet wireguard client or server NAnd ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Powerstream · 2023-11-29 16:10 With 2 running on different devices, you can shut down one without basically cutting off your internet connection. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Powerstream · 2023-11-29 16:13 In the web interface settings you can set themes. One is LCARS and they recently added the Picard series version of LCARS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- KoppleForce · 2023-11-29 16:55 Is there a config / yaml/ json / txt file somewhere in pihole that has all of my custom domains? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-29 17:00 Are you talking about a specific operating system that handles DNS requests this way? Because I think your statement is wrong, generally speaking. The secondary DNS will be queried if primary does not answer within a timeout. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Silencer306 · 2023-11-29 17:32 When people say they have multiple instances, do you have multiple machines that you run it on? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-11-29 17:34 One proxmox server, multiple LXC/VMs. An instance in my case is considered a single LXC or VM. You can it on different hardware devices too of course. For example two Raspberry Pis. I virtualize it with proxmox. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sk1nT7 · 2023-11-29 17:39 Yeah it's mostly OS dependent. Since I run two instances, one is always configured as secondory and gets many hits too. I use Windows, Ubuntu, Kali and many more operating systems. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- maximus459 · 2023-11-29 18:43 I found that pinhole was terrible(for me) with local DNS and even custom block lists. Also AGH automatically updated block lists ---------------------------------------------------------------------- niceman1212 · 2023-11-29 18:48 I use blocky ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _WarDogs_ · 2023-11-29 20:35 Finnaly, someone mentions Technitium. I have been using it for almost a year now and its is very, very stable and fast. 0ms reponse time (always). The best part is pfsense is managing DHCP, pfsense sends ips and hostnames info over to Technitium and then Technitium creates zones based on that info. Perfect. Blocking ads, no problem, block custom ads or whatever, it can be done. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-11-29 20:36 This is correct. The entire point of having multiple nameservers configured on the client is for failover. In 30 years of sysadmin I've never run into an OS that doesn't fall back to the second nameserver when the first one is unavailable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-11-29 20:37 Yes. The main reason for running multiple instances is for redundancy (so you can take a server down for maintenance without breaking everything). ---------------------------------------------------------------------- juantam0d · 2023-11-29 20:55 I use both. Am I crazy? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shanebarrett123 · 2023-11-29 22:28 I use both, PiHole seems to catch everything adguard home misses in my experience and using both together provide the best blocking ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bmaeser · 2023-11-30 11:21 no, but redundant ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ComplexTreat7390 · 2023-11-30 13:24 Pihole FTW. I had issues with Adguard on my rpi but Pihole is working flawlessly! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ordinary_Employer_39 · 2023-12-01 02:04 Adguard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elliexco · 2023-12-06 00:22 Sorry for digging through this comment, I'm new to Adguard and selfhosted, I just installed Adguard and I notice that there're still lots of ads while browsing. Are they just to block data mining etc rather than ads blocking? I still see a lot of blocked requests but just not really sure. Thanks ---------------------------------------------------------------------- yarisken75 · 2023-12-06 00:34 You should dig into the settings and you will find a lot of lists you can add for blocking adds. I think i have around 20 activated. By default adguard only takes a few. I have about 28 percent of dns requests that are blocked. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- elliexco · 2023-12-06 01:13 Thanks, yeah I didn't put a lot of blocklists besides the default ones. Do you have any recommendation lists? Thanks, also do you use Allow lists at all?
