Looking for feedback on a new project reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DonstaTheMonsta · 2023-11-29 11:52 Hey, all! I'm working on a new project to upgrade our self-hosting capabilities. It's a cloud storage alternative to Nextcloud and Owncloud. They were too complex for my tastes so I wrote my own! It let's you choose your storage directory and upload/download to and from it over the internet. That's it! Right now I'm thinking $9.99 for a LIFETIME purchase DRM FREE. Is that reasonable? Alternatively I was wondering if maybe instead I should try to sell cloud storage itself? I'm really passionate about the cloud stuff I've been building and I'm looking for a way to finance getting deeper into it and further development. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ovizii · 2023-11-29 13:12 I need some clarification here: what you are intending to sell is a "GUI" / Web Interface which is self-hostable? And its feature is something like a Dropbox interface, and you can choose your backend? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-29 13:46 You can do both. Sell a license and sell cloud storage. The price depends on the market. Some people won’t pay out of principle, and some might even think it’s too cheap if you provide enough value. The only way to truly know is to actually build it and sell it. Best of luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- unofficialtech · 2023-11-29 14:08 Both come with risks. Lifetime license = lifetime for all codefixes and improvements in the future? Or just the current version? Gotta detail that out. Cloud hosting = do you really want to be responsible for others doing illicit things on your storage without a proper legal team to write your T&Cs, handle subpoenas, represent in court if there's illegal content on your servers? Free places are either trying to hook you to paid services, or are monetizing your data somehow. Paid places are subscription but need the solid infra. Why not just post it open source to see the demand and interest? If it's solid, you can probably make some $ off donations and contributions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DonstaTheMonsta · 2023-11-29 18:13 I was thinking you own the version you bought, and only pay more if you want the project to be worked on more, so you'd purchase new versions but could stay on the version that works for you with no pressure to upgrade. The legal stuff seems very intimidating. As for open source, I've thought about it, but it would guarantee this stays just a hobby. I was thinking it would be cool to create a business that sells widgets usable for life to try to reverse the direction on paying forever and never owning. If I can support myself doing that it would be a dream. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DonstaTheMonsta · 2023-11-29 18:13 Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DonstaTheMonsta · 2023-11-29 18:18 It's a server app that hosts a cloud for you on a machine of your choice. It responds to requests from your client machines for files and gives them to you. Like Nextcloud, but it specifically only does one thing. So you can build a self-hosted cloud server. Does that answer your question? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 100GHz · 2023-11-30 09:07 What's DRM free for storage?
