Docker on Debian, which packages do you use? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adamshand · 2023-11-28 22:34 For the Debian + Docker folk. Do you use the default Debian packages for Docker or do you use the Docker Apt repository? Why or why not? I generally prefer to use the packages built into Debian, but there still(?) isn't a package for the v2 compose plugin. Wondering if I should change to the Docker packages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- vimes_sam · 2023-11-28 23:31 I use Podman because it fits my hipster commie views on things ---------------------------------------------------------------------- epsiblivion · 2023-11-29 00:37 use docker apt package. latest features. builtin compose is a dealbreaker for in release version ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kayson · 2023-11-29 02:20 Also docker repo but mainly because I use Jeff Geerlings ansible role for installing docker. I pin the version, so it's not really much different from using the Debian repo ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TacoCrumbs · 2023-11-29 02:29 the debian repo would give you bugfixes. pinning doesn't unless you set it up correctly ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kayson · 2023-11-29 03:23 If you turn on automatic updates, sure. But it would be no different from having the automatic updates on the docker repo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gioco_chess_al_cess · 2023-11-29 06:08 On debian 11 docker from the repos was too outdated. On debian 12 I am good with docker.io without adding extra apt sources. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JohnyMage · 2023-11-29 07:43 I always use native Debian packages untile there's some reason no to. For example in last job we encountered some problems with older docker daemon from Debian repositories, so we switched to docker-ce from official docker repositories. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TacoCrumbs · 2023-11-29 08:03 no. the point of the debian stable repo is that new features that could potentially introduce new bugs are not included in updates. personally i dont care about new docker features, i would rather the stability of the debian packages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Still-Snow-3743 · 2023-11-29 15:32 snap install docker "I heard you liek containers, so I put your containers in a container" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kayson · 2023-11-29 19:18 Ah didn't realize they're building from source with their own patches. I always figured they're just repackaging the binaries. Good to know! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BlueEye9234 · 2023-11-30 17:12 I install docker-ce from docker folks because I also use nvidia- container-toolkit and they somewhat suggest to use docker-ce. I like it though, as you said, it has the new compose version.
