Are there any podcasts services? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Woke_killa · 2023-11-28 18:51 I'm looking for a solution that will allow me to download podcasts and work like the PocketCasts app, which is perfect, but I prefer self- hosted. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-11-28 20:59 just type "podcast" into the search box, press enter on the keyboard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Significant-Neat7754 · 2023-11-28 23:05 Audiobookshelf ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Woke_killa · 2023-11-29 08:42 I've been testing it for the last month and it's generally useless. Unless you listen locally from your computer and don't care about any functionality. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Significant-Neat7754 · 2023-11-29 08:47 You can always use something like Tailscale for remote access. That's how I do it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sgt_ZigZag · 2023-11-29 19:39 What exactly are you running into that makes it useless? I use it for podcasts and it works great. It can subscribe to an RSS feed, download those mp3 files and then re-host them as their own RSS feed that you load into your podcast client app. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- utahbmxer · 2023-11-29 20:37 I want to like audiobookshelf, but my main go to podcast series has 945 episodes totalling about 44GB. The app is next to useless for this podcast as it takes almost 30 seconds just to load the series in the library and won't even play an episode in the Android app. On desktop it takes another >50seconds to even start playing. Poorly optimized app, hope it gets better, but I'm actively looking for other options. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PhuriousGeorge · 2023-11-30 02:39 I was using [Podgrab](https://github.com/akhilrex/podgrab), but it's basically not maintained at all. There's a whole set of podcasts that aren't accessible because the useragent string hasn't been updated and other issues that have gathered. I'd consider it a dead project, which sucks, it was simple and worked. There have been some forks, but I seem to remember issues with them as well and they also appear dead. I used to use [GPodder](https://github.com/gpodder/gpodder) before that. Don't quite recall why I moved away (probably because it was more a desktop application than a service). Might have to give it a go again. There's another recent project [PodFetch](https://github.com/SamTV12345/PodFetch) that's been self- promoting in the issues sections of other projects, but it seemed young and not in a useable state when I tried it. I too want to like Audiobookshelf but for my collection, it's been very unstable and unreliable. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Woke_killa · 2023-11-30 08:48 There is no automatic download to the phone, it does not always mark the episodes I have listened to. It does not work via reverse proxy, so it only downloads locally, which is why I cannot listen to podcasts outside the house because the application requires a constant connection. There are simply no basic functionalities. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Woke_killa · 2023-11-30 08:51 Wow, you're so smart, I wrote such things on the Internet when your parents hadn't met yet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Legitimate_Farm_3095 · 2023-11-30 11:29 lol, what a poor attempt at an insult ---------------------------------------------------------------------- digitalindependent · 2023-11-30 12:19 As an avid podcast listener I use Pocket Casts. But I have been looking for something to replace this, especially to own my listening status and save favourite episodes. Either I haven't tried it properly enough or there simply isn't anything out there. My experiences: **Podfetch:** Very very basic, can't get Favourites to work, doesn't save specific episodes into a permanent archive, couldn't get playing to work, no mobile apps **Plex**: Cancelled Podcast support two years ago **Audiobookshelf**: As described by others, performance issues (I have \~117 podcasts and updating takes ages), iOS app is Testflight only and BETA is full. Wanted retest with it being only an intermediary. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adepssimius · 2023-11-30 13:01 It does work via reverse proxy though... ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Woke_killa · 2023-11-30 13:41 no, not work. already explained on github so no bullshit bro. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- adepssimius · 2023-11-30 14:24 I mean, the main readme on GH literally has a bunch of reverse proxy configs as the majority of the content and my instance works fine over reverse proxy, so no idea what you are on about. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sgt_ZigZag · 2023-11-30 15:37 You're acting like a child when we're trying to help you. I won't argue with a moron. Good luck! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sgt_ZigZag · 2023-11-30 15:39 Yep it works fine. The problem OP is having is that they're not accessing their instance using the reverse proxy URL so any podcast feed URLs it generates also don't contain the proxy address. Posting this for other readers. OP has already decided this software is not for them so ... lol. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Woke_killa · 2023-11-30 18:02 It's only about you, because I'm writing to you from the beginning that it doesn't work, and you're trying to push your thesis. Only you, not others.
