Google Drive seems to have lost some user data, reports say reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- itsupport_engineer · 2023-11-28 08:45 Always good to know it is best to host your own data. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- helium_uplands · 2023-11-28 09:43 I wanted to downvote but you are just the messenger ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Spooler32 · 2023-11-28 10:21 They'll catch up with me eventually. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- agent_kater · 2023-11-28 11:26 No backup no mercy. It's really not different than with any other drive. In this case it's even in the name, "Drive", but it's the same with Dropbox, S3 and all the other cloud storages. Make backups guys. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Big_Booty_Pics · 2023-11-28 13:27 Still probably a higher chance of a homelabber mismanaging their data and losing it, but I agree that relying solely on Drive is probably not a great idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- InvaderOfTech · 2023-11-28 17:17 This is a massive reminder that if you use Google Drive, you must back that up locally, just in case. Just because if issues like this. If you use any cloud hosting provider with data you care about, back that data up. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PomegranateDry9060 · 2023-11-28 17:33 In the scorching heat of AI wars, when a Googler came to the realization that he couldn't kill Google Drive, he set his eyes on a smaller unsuspecting target— one innocent user's data. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- AnApexBread · 2023-11-28 17:42 This is probably the optimist in me saying this, but I don't think the data is actually gone. Its probably some misconfiguration that is locking people out of their data. That may not functionally be different but technically it's majorly different. My guess is there will be some announcement made in a few days that they fixed a permissions error and everyone's data is back. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Ursa_Solaris · 2023-11-28 20:54 Yeah I can lose my own data thank you very much ---------------------------------------------------------------------- tgwombat · 2023-11-28 21:56 At least I can kick my own ass if I lose my self-hosted data. I’ll take that over a big shrug from Google. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- loyalekoinu88 · 2023-11-29 00:18 Sometimes I wonder if this a ploy to get people to use less cloud storage while making sure people pay for it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- s_and_s_lite_party · 2023-11-29 02:22 I'm sure in the terms of service it says something like "We are not responsible for any data loss, use this service at your own risk". My spouse's terms of service are more like "Sleep on the couch until you work out how to get the family photos back" which is pretty good for my personal backup accountability. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lplanum · 2023-11-29 03:32 It seems to be an issue with the sync client. So any data lost may need to be restored from local cache or backup client side, wich could be a mess. I have never trusted sync-to-cloud solutions. There's to much margin for local fuck up's. I can't tell you the amount of shit I've had my hands in trying to salvage lost files doe to this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mrbmi513 · 2023-11-29 04:07 This is why you use a 3-2-1 backup system.
