Questions about hosting a mail server on AWS reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- z9vown · 2023-11-28 03:14 I would like to have someone set up an Email Server on AWS Free Tier, is it possible? I have 4 domains and need one email address for each domain that will serve as a catch-all address. I would like POP / SMTP and Webmail. What should I expect to pay someone to set it up? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 399ddf95 · 2023-11-28 03:28 I don't think any SMTP servers are likely to run well on a system with 1 GiB of RAM for the OS + server, especially if you're also planning to run a POP/IMAP daemon and a webserver that's offering webmail. The [installation docs](https://docs.iredmail.org/iredmail- easy.getting.start.html#hardware-requirements) for iRedmail suggest 4 GiB for "a low traffic production mail server with spam/virus scanning enabled." It looks like the iRedmail developers will install it for you on a clean new system for [$300](https://www.iredmail.org/support.html). I have no idea if that's a fair price or how it works, I've never used them for that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- z9vown · 2023-11-28 03:31 Thanks for the info ---------------------------------------------------------------------- bixxus · 2023-11-28 03:42 Can confirm. I run iredmail for just myself, and started out trying just 2GB of memory and it just wasn't enough. Since upgrading it 4 it's been fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- RedditSlayer2020 · 2023-11-28 04:51 My sendmail, Dovecot, nginx roundcube stack is running smooth on a 256mb vps That's smtp with spamhaus check, pop3 imap and webmail interface. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MaxBroome · 2023-11-28 05:19 If you only need a receiving and catch-all address. You could use Cloudflare’s relay service. It’s totally free with the exception that you can’t *send* email but only have them forwarded to another email address, such as your personal email address. It’s super easy and quick to setup, and if your domains aren’t already behind Cloudflare you should do it, it really is great. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ZarehD · 2023-11-28 06:38 I think this is the wrong approach (self-hosting a mail server). Just use a dedicated service like [MxRoute](https://mxroute.com/), [Migadu](https://www.migadu.com/), [FastMail](https://www.fastmail.com/), [StartMail](https://www.startmail.com/), or similar. Heck, even Google Workspaces and Microsoft 365 are a better option. That's my $0.02, anyway ;-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- G1zm0e · 2023-11-28 12:44 Aws workmail, if I recall it’s 5$ per user + storage. Will be cheaper then any ec2 instance and you get some spam protection also.
