Is there a way to home host a cloud easily? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- omnom143 · 2023-11-27 23:33 all the cloud apps ive seen advertize "easy installs" but i end up with 30 different problems i cant solve, is there any cloud apps that i can just easily install without issues? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DamascusWolf82 · 2023-11-27 23:47 Honestly the nextcloud AIO docker package is pretty simple. If you can read docs and use docker, portainer etc then it will work. What problems are you facing? Are you behind CGNAT or open facing? Is it user error or a skill deficit? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Infinite__Okra · 2023-11-27 23:47 I feel like you are describing Docker. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jlmacdonald · 2023-11-27 23:51 I’ve been meaning to message you with canonical microcloud. At what point did it fail? How much experience do you have working with linux? What architecture is your server operating on? Do you have any logs to assist with debugging? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DamascusWolf82 · 2023-11-28 00:18 Do you know if you have a public ip, where you can set up port forwarding in your router, or a private ip? You can check by looking at your ip in your home router interface and comparing it to the public ip ranges. If you don’t plan on accessing your services outside of your home network, its not a real problem, however setting up AIO becomes harder. Do you have a domain? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- jlmacdonald · 2023-11-28 00:30 Nextcloud ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dev_all_the_ops · 2023-11-28 00:39 [CasaOS](https://casaos.io/) is about as easy as it gets. ``` curl -fsSL https://get.casaos.io | sudo bash ``` It provides a gui front end for docker. Combine that with the portainer app and there isn't much you can't do. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Still-Snow-3743 · 2023-11-28 00:39 Your whole life becomes much simpler when you use docker. Elevator pitch: Docker containers are preconfigured services which run isolated from the rest of your system and only expose individual directories you map into the container. These directories are the persistence part of the application and survive a restart of the container or the host system. Just backup your scripts and the data directories and you have backed up your entire server. I have a few scripts as examples. 'cd "$(dirname "$0")"' changes to the directory the script is stored in, and therefore will create and map data directories from that parent directory. Letsencrypt proxy companion will set up a single listener for web and ssl traffic, setup virtual hosts automatically, and setup SSL, all with automations. First, you need letsencrypt nginx proxy companion: #!/bin/bash cd "$(dirname "$0")" docker run --detach \ --restart always \ --name nginx-proxy \ --publish 80:80 \ --publish 443:443 \ --volume $(pwd)/certs:/etc/nginx/certs \ --volume $(pwd)/vhost:/etc/nginx/vhost.d \ --volume $(pwd)/conf:/etc/nginx/conf.d \ --volume $(pwd)/html:/usr/share/nginx/html \ --volume /var/run/docker.sock:/tmp/docker.sock:ro \ --volume $(pwd)/my_proxy.conf:/etc/nginx/conf.d/my_proxy.conf:ro \ --volume $(pwd)/nginx.conf:/etc/nginx/nginx.conf:ro \ --volume $(pwd)/acme:/etc/acme.sh \ jwilder/nginx-proxy docker run --detach \ --restart always \ --name nginx-proxy-letsencrypt \ --volumes-from nginx-proxy \ --volume /var/run/docker.sock:/var/run/docker.sock:ro \ --env "DEFAULT_EMAIL=YOUR_EMAIL_ADDRESS_GOES_HERE@MYDOMAIN.COM" \ jrcs/letsencrypt-nginx-proxy-companion Then for each service, you can start with a docker command as well with a few extra environment variables. Here is one for nextcloud: docker run -d \ --name nextcloud \ --hostname cloud.MYDOMAIN.COM \ -v $(pwd)/data:/var/www/html \ -v $(pwd)/php.ini:/usr/local/etc/php/conf.d/zzz-custom.ini \ --env "VIRTUAL_HOST=cloud.MYDOMAIN.COM" \ --env "LETSENCRYPT_HOST=cloud.MYDOMAIN.COM" \ --env "VIRTUAL_PROTO=http" \ --env "VIRTUAL_PORT=80" \ --env "OVERWRITEHOST=cloud.MYDOMAIN.COM" \ --env "OVERWRITEPORT=443" \ --env "OVERWRITEPROTOCOL=https" \ --restart unless-stopped \ nextcloud:25.0.0 And Plex (/dev/dri is quicksync for hardware transcode): docker run \ --device /dev/dri:/dev/dri \ --restart always \ -d \ --name plex \ --network host \ -e TZ="America/Chicago" \ -e PLEX_CLAIM="claim-somerandomcharactershere" \ -v $(pwd)/config:/config \ -v /my/media/directory/on/host/system:/media \ plexinc/pms-docker Obsidian: docker run --rm -d \ --name obsidian \ -v $(pwd)/vaults:/vaults \ -v $(pwd)/config:/config \ --env "VIRTUAL_HOST=obsidian.MYDOMAIN.COM " \ --env "LETSENCRYPT_HOST=obsidian.MYDOMAIN.COM " \ --env "VIRTUAL_PROTO=http" \ --env "VIRTUAL_PORT=8080" \ ghcr.io/sytone/obsidian-remote:latest ---------------------------------------------------------------------- TheBoatyMcBoatFace · 2023-11-28 00:44 Download docker and then install Portainer. Find a service and goggle "x docker compose" ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frederickrl · 2023-11-28 01:34 Docker does allow you to utilize your computers drive. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- frederickrl · 2023-11-28 01:37 The gentleman is trying to help and although maybe unintending your response did come off as rude. Given you have hosted other servers successfully in the past that means you do have an open facing IP address and don't have to be worried about being behind a CGNAT. There are step by step guides with docker which is the BEST solution to avoid having issues with the install as this will remove a lot of variables that a local install on your machine could cause problems with. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Sudden_Cheetah7530 · 2023-11-28 01:47 I'm sorry but there is no such thing you can do anything without issues while not knowing (unless you pay for the services). You have to spare your time to learn the things. But like the other guys said, container tools are the one worth learning for sure. Go and grab any `docker quick start` tutorial. Anything should work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gooseberryfalls · 2023-11-28 01:48 > something idrk what happened but it didnt work, its not skill deficit shit just doesnt work for no reason on my server. Homey, I'm not trying to be rude, but this is 100% indicative of you not having the skills to look through logs, look up errors, and problem solve. We all started out this way. I remember banging my head against my desk for *days* trying to get NextCloud running. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ScribeOfGoD · 2023-11-28 01:56 Error between computer and keyboard ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hdddanbrown · 2023-11-28 02:05 `cp -r google.com /home/user/mycloud` ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Phndrummer · 2023-11-28 02:10 I was looking to deploy nextcloud AIO docker this week and realized the support for the pi version is ending. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DearJudge · 2023-11-28 02:26 The answer is docker and docker-compose. The problem you're describing is the reason it exists. Each app is isolated and runs as though it has its own dedicated system, but you can map directories and ports in to make data persistent, and ensure it all just works. This includes mapping in your whole HDD, or even /dev if you so desire (don't do this). It honestly makes it trivial to get most things up and running. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- aussiemano9 · 2023-11-28 02:31 As someone who almost exclusively reads reddit on mobile, I forget there's sub reddit stickies and sidebar. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Docccc · 2023-11-28 02:42 “I dont want to spend money on cloud services and dont want to spend time on self hosting” pick one buddy ---------------------------------------------------------------------- omnom143 · 2023-11-28 02:52 i legit never said that ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MassPatriot · 2023-11-28 03:12 Relevant-ish xkcd https://xkcd.com/1988/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Infinite__Okra · 2023-11-28 03:15 I didn’t do it on purpose, but now that you mention it, “I feel like you are described Docker” sounds like something the girl stick figure in xkcd would say. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FlibblesHexEyes · 2023-11-28 03:30 I feel like that XKCD describes projects that came after the introduction of StackOverflow ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- hdddanbrown · 2023-11-28 06:25 So do i but i still can see stickies and look at sidebars. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- omnom143 · 2023-12-05 04:01 i figued out what the issue was, everything on my nextcloud just deletes itself every single time i restart it
