Using Adguard Home - Self host a proxy as well? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YankeesIT · 2023-11-27 02:02 I was curious about something. I saw a video recently on youtube that talked about using a proxy server as a sort of man in the middle to mask your IP, get a little more privacy. I already use adguard home for my home network, would it help to also self host a proxy server or does adguard home accomplish the same? Thanks! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Gaming09 · 2023-11-27 02:05 The network chuck one? Proxies are fine but if you're trying to encrypt traffic only way is really to use a VPN but with anything you need to understand the ISP at the end of the tunnel has your info regardless ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LilHoushOnThePrairie · 2023-11-27 02:06 Adguard is not used for a proxy and is just a DNS server. You should never expose your DNS server to the world which should be behind a proxy server like nginx. This way you can allowlist certain IPs like your home IP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oujii · 2023-11-27 03:35 What are you trying to accomplish? Just hiding your IP? Are you AdGuard for DNS blocking only or something else? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YankeeLimaVictor · 2023-11-27 08:03 Adguardhome doesn't mask any of your traffic. (If you configure it properly, it ill encrypt your DNS requests. But that's all). Need to know what exactly you are trying to accomplish. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HellDuke · 2023-11-27 09:53 I think you may have misunderstood what a proxy does. If you self host a proxy it does nothing in terms of hiding your IP. The server will see the exact same address as before. The way you would hide your IP with a proxy is if it was hosted somewhere else other than your network. Basically what will happen is `PC → Proxy → Server` instead of `PC → Server` Basically the server will see the public IP address of the proxy server. So if the public IP of the proxy server is the same as your PC (in the case of self hosting on the same network) what would be the purpose? Generally a proxy on the same network is used for access control (for example blocking certain websites by URL rather than IP through a firewall). I don't know the inner workings of AdGuard Home, but to me it's more of a DNS than a proxy. Instead of acting on a connection it acts on a DNS query and blcoks you from getting the address you want but if we were to just go directly by IP address it probably would just go through wheras a Proxy could catch that and stop it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YankeesIT · 2023-11-27 11:45 Yep that one. Using adguard home for ad blocking and local dns caching. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- YankeesIT · 2023-11-27 11:46 Okay thank you for the info!
