I am looking for an ngrok alternative I can selfhost. My usecase is
hosting the service as infrastructure for a CTF team to easily test
exploit scripts.

This. I work on [zrok.io](https://zrok.io) which is free and open
source as an alternative (though we have a free SaaS too).

For domain names, you can go with any reverse proxy like nginx proxy
manager or caddy or anything else you like.
