Tailscale - completely noob question reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the-rhythm · 2023-11-25 08:10 Hello Everyone, Sorry for being such a noob here but I am switching over to 4g broadband again next week and I have been told that I will not longer be able to remotely access my DVR or mini home server since the provider does not give a public ip address like a traditional broadband provider. Am I correct in saying Tailscale would resolve this issue somehow and allow me to view my camera system remotely? Thanks in advance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gioco_chess_al_cess · 2023-11-25 08:19 I would expect so, probably you will not be able to establish a direct P2P connection but through a tailscale relay server it will work. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ElevenNotes · 2023-11-25 08:20 Yes, and yes. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the-rhythm · 2023-11-25 08:26 Thanks, that's a relief. Is the setup quite simple? Is the setup router level so that all my devices will start working as if I was connected to the lan? Some devices such as my alarm system I wouldn't be able to change any settings or install relay software etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fluffer_Wuffer · 2023-11-25 09:51 It should work - I have a 4g backup Internet connection, that is the same.. its great for when I'm away, I have a couple of VMs running Tailscale that route specifically through this.. in addition, I have some smart plugs that connect through it, that allow me to power cycle my main router and servers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the-rhythm · 2023-11-25 10:04 How long did it take you to set it all up? When it comes to all this I am literally starting from scratch so I hope it's as simple as installing software without any programming or complex configuration involved. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarkyscouser · 2023-11-25 11:49 You will be behind CGNAT and a VPN will work yes but you will need to run a VPN client on each of your remote devices. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mexikin · 2023-11-25 14:20 I'm behind CGNAt and I have to use tailscale to view my cameras. I just have a spare computer at my house that I use as a server and install tailscale on it. With that I'm able to access all my devices at my home. Very easy and quick setup. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oujii · 2023-11-25 14:31 Yes, you can use a server on your LAN as a subnet router, so when accessing from outside, you can access everything on your LAN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oujii · 2023-11-25 14:32 You don't need to run a client on each remote device if the remote devices are all on the same network, you can just use one of them as a subnet router. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarkyscouser · 2023-11-25 14:37 The OP is asking about remote access And what's the point if they're on the same network anyway? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the-rhythm · 2023-11-25 14:45 That's perfect. I already have a windows 11 server running continously so I'll try and install onto that. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oujii · 2023-11-25 14:49 You didn’t understand it. OP is changing his home connection to one that doesn’t have a public IP. He mentioned two devices that need to be accessed, if they are on the same network, only one of them needs to have it installed. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Oujii · 2023-11-25 14:50 Check here: https://tailscale.com/kb/1019/subnets/?tab=windows Also check r/Tailscale for doubts. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Fluffer_Wuffer · 2023-11-25 16:31 I brought a cheap 4g WIFI router from Ali Epxress foe about £20... the headset part was just getting the SIM setting, everything else was easy... but I've not tied the 4G directly into my network, rather it's just acting like a wireless hotspot.. Being off the main network is what makes it so useful from a backup perspective. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- the-rhythm · 2023-11-25 16:50 Yes, exactly that.
