How can nginx be used as a reverse proxy for self hosted website? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LanceMain_No69 · 2023-11-23 20:00 Im very new to self hosting and networking so please bear with me Im hosting my website on my pc with my nodejs server and a noip domain name. Problem is, Im using a AAAA noip domain name, because my isp only gave me a public ipv6, and a private ipv4, so the ipv4 address i linked to my domain is basically dead. All clients connecting only with ipv4 just get hung, while clients with ipv6 connect normally. While trying to troubleshoot this, i came across some people having similar problems in this sub, and a common solution would be using nginx as a reverse proxy. But should the client still connect to pc via nginx before being routed to my site normally, how would that change anything, if nginx is running on my computer? How do i give ipv4 clients a way to receive my site with my ipv6 only server without paying for any services? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-11-23 20:26 Yeah nginx wouldn't solve it unless you ran it on an external VPS, you can also use a tunneling service to get IPv4 connectivity into your server. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LanceMain_No69 · 2023-11-23 20:34 Ive heard reverse proxys can help mask your ip, and make your site more secure. Should i still implement nginx to my connection regardless if thats the case? Also, could you redirect me to a good tunneling service or resources to get to know more abt the topic? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-11-23 20:45 They don't mask your IP, unless used with a tunnel of some kind or run it on a VPS. Cloudflare tunnels are popular, easy to set up and use.
