Possibility to save video from ONVIF cameras to NVR (windows/linux) reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stizzo · 2023-11-23 16:41 Hello, I am sorry if this question is repeating, I am pretty new on ONVIF, security cameras and NVR, but I haven't found anything related to my question. I am going to buy Tapo C420S2 cameras, and since they support ONVIF, I am planning to save videos on my private server which may act as NVR. Since these cameras are running by batteries, it is not convinient to save 24/7 video of the cameras as that will drain batteries. Do you know if it's possible to save video to NVR using ONVIF protocol ONLY when there is something detected? Thank you! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gripesandmoans · 2023-11-23 17:35 So if you want to detect 24/7 then the cameras are on and using battery 24/7. So my questions would be - is there an appreciable difference in battery drain between just detecting and streaming. And... are the cameras capable of turning on WiFi and transmitting only when needed? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Stizzo · 2023-11-23 17:43 As far I understood the camera is detecting 24/7 but not streaming, just sending notification in case to the mobile app. If I associate the camera to a DVR do them have to send data 24/7? Or is it possible to recorder and send data to DVR only when something is detected? That would save battery as it use less wifi to push data + my server wont write useless part of video where nothing is happening. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- gripesandmoans · 2023-11-23 17:50 The ability to stream only when motion is detected is going to depend upon the camera's capabilities. As far as recording an intermittent stream, it will depend on the NVR software. I have a very rudimentary setup using ZoneMinder. It is not happy when one of the cameras "goes away". Perhaps something more sophisticated like Blue Iris would handle it better.
