Any advice on how to have the following setup? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UltramanQuar · 2023-11-23 15:18 I have small 1 core vps server with a static ip in the internet. And I have a beefy personal computer that I want all the workload to go. So the idea is something like this, when my pc turns up it connects to the vps, and vps starts proxying all the traffic on ports 80, 443, 8000-9000 to my personal pc. I am not sure if it is possible because my internet provider only allows dynamic ips. So the question is how to do it? maybe some tutorials or helpful links would be of great help. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zoom3579 · 2023-11-23 15:46 The question is really what do you want to achieve. Then work backwards from there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- i_am_art_65 · 2023-11-23 15:56 You’re describing a reverse proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UltramanQuar · 2023-11-23 16:29 Well I want to use it to host some of my personal services. Maybe some video streaming from jellyfin. Host something like personal notion ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UltramanQuar · 2023-11-23 16:39 The only tutorials I found were about hosting it locally nothing about how to actually do it with vps and how to properly set it all up. Maybe I am just reading it wrong. Do you have any tutorials that can help me? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chilliconkanye_ · 2023-11-23 18:00 Just install Tailscale on your home server, and the client apps on all your other devices, you’ll be able to access it from anywhere then. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UltramanQuar · 2023-11-23 18:15 Awesome, I think that was something I was looking for. I also found headscale self hosted alternative to it, have you tried it before. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chilliconkanye_ · 2023-11-23 18:18 I have used headscale, even used it in a previous company who didn’t want to spend anything! It’s great, but unless you really are dead set on self hosting the control plane, I’d just go with Tailscale (I use Tailscale at home, might switch one day to headscale but the free tier of Tailscale gives me very little motivation to do so) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- i_am_art_65 · 2023-11-23 18:52 Install a reverse proxy on your VPS. Configure it to forward to the static IP of your router. Configure your router to port forward to your PC. Now here’s the important part. Configure the firewall in your PC to only accept traffic on the forwarded ports that originate from your reverse proxy. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UltramanQuar · 2023-11-23 19:00 I don’t really have a static ip of the router. That’s the problem. As I recall isps use dynamic ips with some port mapping. I might be wrong though ---------------------------------------------------------------------- i_am_art_65 · 2023-11-23 19:35 I misread your post. Then you can either use TailScale on both your PC and VPS and forward to your TailNet IP (eliminating port forwarding in your router) or register a domain name with a service like DNSExit or DynDns which will use tools to keep your hostname updated as your router IP address changes and point your reverse proxy at the domain name. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- from-nibly · 2023-11-23 20:30 Tailscale like others have said. Or you can use a reverse ssh tunnel. With some sort of ssh daemonizer.
