Advantage of wallabag over Instapaper / pocket ? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyrusdemnati · 2023-11-22 20:54 I've managed to self host on my server with a local address at least, what's advantage of wallabag? Over others ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zenith-zox · 2023-11-22 21:05 Wallabag is pretty good at retrieving pages behind paywalls which the others won't or can't do so well. (I've self-hosted Wallabag happily for about 4 years now - but have moved over to Omnivore which I'd recommend trying out. Really good for annotations and less clunky UI than Wallabag. But Wallabag wins for retrieving behind paywall pages, though.) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyrusdemnati · 2023-11-22 22:01 Behind paywall ? So for example if I see an article being a paywall I can save to wallabag and read it? I tied fiery feeder iOS but I keep getting token error so sticking with wallabag app for now Will install on my android e reader and see how wallabag works there I'm also self hosting ---------------------------------------------------------------------- esterf234 · 2023-11-23 06:28 wallabag offers greater control over your saved articles and data compared to Instapaper or Pocket. Self-hosting provides added privacy and security, allowing you to fully manage your content without relying on third-party services. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zenith-zox · 2023-11-23 08:51 Yes. It’s not perfect and a few sites don’t work (eg. Substack) but I’ve found that generally, you can read most. Try it out and see. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kyrusdemnati · 2023-11-23 10:07 Great yeh it worked for some Gong to see how I can sync this to koreeader which I believe does rss feeds ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kdecherf · 2023-11-23 15:46 (one of the wallabag core dev here) Yeah, I must admit that I find the Omnivore's UI pretty neat. I would like to work on a new frontend for wallabag but it's quite difficult to find time for that 😅 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- kdecherf · 2023-11-23 15:49 wallabag has the ability to use your site credentials to fetch articles behind a paywall (for example [lemonde.fr](https://lemonde.fr)). This does not work for all websites as there is a need to specify how we connect to each site. There are some limitations with websites rendered on client-side using JS as well. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Garret88 · 2023-11-23 21:36 Did you manage to selfhost omnivore? 👀 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- zenith-zox · 2023-11-24 12:37 I did initially but it wasn't as fully-featured as the non-self-hosted one. - so I'm using that currently. I keep my highlights and notes synced to an Obsidian vault.
