N100/N95 with 16GB RAM maximum enough for Proxmox? reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BieJay · 2023-11-22 16:12 I want to move from my RPi4 to a mini server, for example Beelink Mini s12 Pro (N100+16GB DDR4 Ram) or Blackview Mini Pc MP80 (N95+16GB LPDDR5 RAM). So, this processor type only supports up to 16GB (officially). Will this be enough for Proxmox, ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Over-Advice6046 · 2023-11-22 16:24 Depend on how much you spin the VM, with 8GB ram you can spin 2-4 VM. In 16 GB maybe 4-8 VM. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-22 16:41 It all boils down to what you want to use it with. 16GB is plenty for what you are describing right now, plus more in the future if you keep your installation tidy. Would I limit myself with a max 16gb system? Probably not, unless I was certain my usage for that device is fixed (e.g., I got a huge deal on that device) Also keep in mind that N95/N100 are more power efficient than a Ryzen. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BieJay · 2023-11-22 16:51 But it depends on the VMs I spin, I assume? Or can I understand that? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Skaronator · 2023-11-22 16:53 The memory limit on Intel Ark is wrong. They support 64GB IIRC but largest module available are 48GB. You should also pick DDR5 edition since it basically doubles the throughput and DDR4 single channel is already bottlenecking the CPU. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BieJay · 2023-11-22 16:55 Yes, I definitely got the efficiency-argument in mind. What would be a comparable Ryzen-CPU? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- dazchad · 2023-11-22 17:01 I'm not too familiar with AMD lineup, but a quick google search for `amd n100` brought me this: https://old.reddit.com/r/MiniPCs/comments/ 176iveh/amd_equivalent_of_n100n305_cant_find_any/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Over-Advice6046 · 2023-11-22 18:16 Yeah, if you spin up a linux VM mostly, it would be enough. But if you spin up a Windows VM (server or consumer) it would be limited and somewhere at the point you need more ram. The conclusion is how much and how do you use VM for. 1GB of ram is enough for just Proxmox. Sorry for the bad english tho ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raithmir · 2023-11-22 18:20 16gb is fine, but you'd probably want to stick with containers. I had an S12 Pro with 32gb working just fine. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- BieJay · 2023-11-22 18:28 Ah so you just put in more RAM and it still worked? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Raithmir · 2023-11-22 18:37 Yup! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sarkyscouser · 2023-11-22 18:51 I was going to reply with this. There are loads of reports out there of Alder Lake N users running 32 GB RAM. I'm considering an N305/i226 ITX MB as the basis of my next system running Linux and around 20 different containers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Lamber414 · 2023-11-22 21:17 I'm running an n100 with 32gb ram too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- MRP_yt · 2023-11-22 22:14 I have 3x n100 16gb ram as proxmox cluster. Have bunch of VMs, containers going. So far, 3 months in and not one single issue. And all 3 going at full till still uses less power then my previous single server setup. One of these n100s even have 3x proxmox virtualized where I tinker with cluster, ha, ceph, zfs and other stuff ... Like sandbox, before I move to live. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ProbablePenguin · 2023-11-23 15:23 Proxmox itself uses about 1GB, so other than that you have the rest left over for everything else.
