Should I get this VPS for hosting a basic website for myself? This is a private hosting service that my friend's friend runs. reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IAskSoMnyQuestions · 2023-11-21 14:41 Also this is the only VPS option he runs. No other tiers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deletriusster · 2023-11-21 14:50 no, its expensive. i got this one for $11 a year. https://cloudserver.net/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IAskSoMnyQuestions · 2023-11-21 14:58 $11/yr? The cheapest one I see is $4/m. is the $11/yr a one-time thing, or is that permanent? Still looking through their website. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-21 15:15 Wrong sub. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- IAskSoMnyQuestions · 2023-11-21 15:16 Is there a better sub I can post this question to? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-21 15:30 I don't know but this sub is about self-hosting not using a VPS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- warlordjones · 2023-11-21 15:35 Something hosted on a VPS still counts as self-hosted as per the definition given in the sub sidebar. Whether this is technically the right place to ask what VPS to get, pass. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-21 15:38 No it doesn't since you aren't hosting it. It is the exact opposite of self-hosting. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- SchindlersIgnoreList · 2023-11-21 15:42 You should go for it only because your friend runs it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- HawkJizbel · 2023-11-21 15:43 Check out https://f4.fo/ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Original_Painting151 · 2023-11-21 15:43 I would avoid this. If you plan on using it for anything long term I’d look at established providers instead The fact that you have to raise a ticket after you order to get your service activated is also a red flag for me You could also find something that uses SSD instead of ‘Hybrid storage’ ---------------------------------------------------------------------- xurato101 · 2023-11-21 15:46 I would take VPS LINUX XS 2$/month from IONOS. https://www.ionos.com/servers/vps ---------------------------------------------------------------------- _Answer_42 · 2023-11-21 15:57 No, self host means you've built the OS, cpu , ram and whole computer and also run your dam for electricity and have a direct connection to undersea cables ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chrishch · 2023-11-21 16:37 I have one that is US$10 per year with 1GB of RAM and 1Gbps port (shared, obviously), and 20GB storage. [This is the link to order.](https://cloudserver.net/billing/index.php?rp=/store/custom- packages/leb-1gb-annual-plan) Mine hasn't renewed yet so I don't know if it's permanent or not. I have had it since March, 2023 and it has been fine. [This is the sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/VPS/) for VPS discussions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- user3872465 · 2023-11-21 16:45 I mean this is too litle info. What IP exactly? one v6? one Legacy IP? also HDD storage? bruh..Whatabout SLAs? RAM CPU? Datasecurity? Redundancy? Even if its a friend I would avoid it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rickestrada · 2023-11-21 16:56 Same. Can’t find $11/yr ---------------------------------------------------------------------- fmbret · 2023-11-21 17:07 Did you manufacture all of the parts in your home server? Do you run your own ISP? Where exactly do you want to draw the line? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Top_Outlandishness78 · 2023-11-21 17:09 You can get bare minimum aws ec2 at about this price ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Simplixt · 2023-11-21 17:31 Expensive. And I avoid small providers, without any established compliance, where a bored admin could surf through my server root ;) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CevreMuhendisi · 2023-11-21 17:37 where ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deletriusster · 2023-11-21 18:00 [https://cloudserver.net/billing/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0](https://c loudserver.net/billing/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0) im not sure if you can see it. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deletriusster · 2023-11-21 18:01 but its only 20GB and 1GB ram. it works though. I use it mainly for VPN. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NetSecCity · 2023-11-21 18:08 X10hosting is free. No ads, fantástico webapp deployed included with Cpanel. For a project website I would never pay, if it’s commercial maybe ---------------------------------------------------------------------- idontbelieveyouguy · 2023-11-21 18:09 "legacy ip"? as a network engineer i've never heard what i assume you meant to be IPv4 as "legacy"; especially since it's by far the majority of the internet. i'd argue that it'll probably never actually go away. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- sebampueromori · 2023-11-21 18:10 OP said it's a basic website for himself, not his next big enterprise site that needs redundancy. If it's something simple as that I'd go for it ---------------------------------------------------------------------- LavaCreeperBOSSB · 2023-11-21 18:32 Whats the provider? Also, unless your friend is paying for it, why not check out something like Oracle Cloud's Always Free Tier? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- emprahsFury · 2023-11-21 18:44 You can make this argument, but the fact is the argument has already been had years ago and the rules of the sub were explicitly written to go against your interpretation. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Defiant-Ad-5513 · 2023-11-21 18:48 Yeah but atleast from OC i know there is a 5$ one. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- user3872465 · 2023-11-21 19:12 Well its more of a sarkastic gesture to everyone that goes there length to make excuses about not using or implementing v6. When considdering the internet as a whole inlcuding the asian space, I'd argue v6 addoption is greater than v4 adoption. As theres just more space to adopt. But hard to get numbers for it out of China and the likes. But yes the later part of your sentence is what sadens me and is the reason I call it legacy IP which it is as of the introduction ov v6 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- user3872465 · 2023-11-21 19:13 I'd still want to know my data is save and not looked at. Or being able to get stolen etc. Further the other points are still vallid. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Bytepond · 2023-11-21 19:23 I mean, supporting a friend's friend is one thing, but this doesn't make much sense. Hetzner has much better VPSs at lower price, all automatic, and they're established (also 10g internet connection) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PatochiDesu · 2023-11-21 19:26 friends friend is never a good idea. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- GIRO17 · 2023-11-21 19:32 [Contabo.com](https://Contabo.com) has a really good VPS option which is in the same price range, but you get information about what you'll get. (8 Gb Memory, 200 Gb SSD, 4 vCores). But if you only want to run a website, maybe just go with dedicated web hosting? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DisastrousMagician16 · 2023-11-21 19:47 Vervel hosting all the way, it’s free ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-21 20:25 Where in the rules does it say that? Not in any of the rules posted on the sidebar. So site the rules. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- EndlessHiway · 2023-11-21 20:27 What a silly argument. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- deletriusster · 2023-11-21 21:21 Did it work? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- mpopgun · 2023-11-21 21:23 Check out digital ocean ---------------------------------------------------------------------- lilolalu · 2023-11-21 21:31 If you want a basic website, you can get cheaper alternatives and don't even need a vps. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WhyAydan · 2023-11-21 21:40 Or cloudways ---------------------------------------------------------------------- shadowndacorner · 2023-11-21 21:56 Okay, so put it on a tiny cloud server from DigitalOcean behind CloudFlare/CloudFront with Origin Shield if you need dynamic content, or use GitHub Pages/netlify if it's a static site. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- draxlok_ · 2023-11-21 22:15 What do you use the VPS for? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ButterscotchFar1629 · 2023-11-21 22:51 Can get a Google ec2 micro instance on their free plan as well. I use mine for my head scale controller and uptime Kuma. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hallc · 2023-11-21 23:19 If it's just a basic website then OP should probably just look at something like a paid version of Carrd. It's nothing flashy or anything but it's relatively inexpensive for a simple single page or sectioned website. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- thaexistentialist · 2023-11-21 23:49 Everyone starts somewhere, give the smalls guys willing to put in the work some credit. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Original_Painting151 · 2023-11-21 23:51 If what your hosting on this VPS has no major importance to you - then sure ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ibnunowshad · 2023-11-22 06:50 What kind of website? If static, I will happily use github pages or gitlab pages. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- chrishch · 2023-11-22 13:34 I use the VPS to download podcasts. I used to have an Intel NUC at home that I put Linux Mint on it, but since it died, I didn't want to replace it and I found this $10/yr VPS that lets me run cronjobs. The utility I use is called Podget. It's a bit cumbersome to set up, but once it's done, it works great.
