Paperless and Nextcloud on QNAP or else reddit / selfhosted ---------------------------------------------------------------------- rhinopup ยท 2023-11-21 10:24 Hello r/selfhost! I have been a reader in the past, but now I am turning to the help of the community: I came across Paperless and wanted to give it a try as we as a family are drowning in paperwork. I like to try things out but I am not super experienced with Linus or Command line tools. I have a QNAP TS453a up and running (File Station 30TB, Raid 5 + Offsitebackup with the same config) which I can reach with the various QNAP services (Mostly QSYNC, sometimes QNAP Cloud, Wireguard is also running). I want to have paperless ngx in a docker (I would realize this with container station) but have following questions: 1. Does it make sense to set up paperless on the current setup? 1.a. YES: what would I need to pay attention to? 1.b. NO: what could/should I change to make 1.a. possible? 1.c. Can I migrate the container to another platform, when I need to upgrade? 2. I will migrate to Apple soon, does QSync work with apple as well (I guess there is an app, but that does not mean, that it is useful.) Is there anything I need to consider? 3. Is there a benefit of migrating to Nextcloud just for file storage? I know nextcloud can do a lot more things, right now files are the only things I need (especially sharing files with other from the outside) 3.a. Would nextcloud run on a VM, a docker or something else? 3.b. Does it make sense to set up Nextcloud on QNAP (or is the hardware too weak?) 3.c. Should I run paperless in the same VM or not (depends on 3.a.) 4. What is the next step? I guess the QNAP will die on me at some point, or I would like to upgrade to a 10 Gbit network. 4.a. What would be the best solution to set up now, to be future proof and keep the migration effort to a minimum. 4.b. What hardware should I get for my own server? (Cores, Ram, GPU) In the future I want to be able to: - Access from outside with wireguard (I have a Fritz Router which is quite nice) - Let people have access to certain files and folders from the outside without any hassle. - Have paperless up and running for good, but want to access the PDFs from within the nextcloud folder structure - Have decent hardware to be safe for another 10 years. (Qnap has served me well in the last 10). - users will be around 5 on a regular basis (currently 2) Hope that was not too long, excited for your ideas. Cheers
